Million Dollar Question

Postby Sundet » Sat May 31, 2014 7:32 pm

... or perhaps only a bit of trivia.

Anyway, here's a Toto question for the die hard fan:

Over the years, Toto have had a number of official band members singing lead vocals on record: Bobby Kimball, David Paich, Steve Lukather, Steve Porcaro, Fergie Frederiksen, Joseph Williams and Jean Michel Byron. Though I probably should, I am not counting Jenny Douglas, John James and Greg Phillinganes here, either because their stints with the band were not official as such (i.e. were not official band members) or their vocal contributions were ultimately rather limited, albeit certainly not in terms of quality (i.e. Greg only sang about a track and a half).

Now, as for the question: if we exclude Douglas, James and Phillinganes: which Toto lead singer is the only one not to have had one or more of his songs sung by Steve Lukather live in concert? Or, to rephrase: Which Toto singer is the only one not to have had his lead vocals covered by Steve Lukather in a live situation?

To drop a hint... this is what Lukather said of a situation when he found himself in a bit of a squeeze and might have had to step in for this particular singer: 'I can't sing that high, think of something. This is going out live.'

Hmm..we've all heard Luke cover Out of Love, sung by JMB. Drawin a blank on Joe or Bobby covers. During the KOD/Tambu period, I know he covered some tenor stuff with help from Jenny. I'm going to just hazard a guess and say Fergie. Mostly because the 'Isolation' album gets overlooked.

Lukather sang A Million miles away on the Tambu tour (so it's not Bobby K), he sang Angel don't cry on the KoD tour (so it's not Fergie), he sang Out of love (so it's not Byron),

I don't Think Steve ever sang any of the tunes written and sung by Steve Porcaro (Takin it back, It's a feeling) The other two Steve P songs were A secret love and Lea but those were sung by Bobby K and Joseph W.

I don't think Lukather sang live any of the songs that David Paich sang on record. Did he sing any of Joseph's? I can't think of one.

I'm interested in the correct answer. I'd say Steve Porcaro, David Paich and Joseph W :) But you're asking for one singer...hmmm

Not Toto, but he did sing "Africa" and "Hold The Line" on the Ringo tour.

Easy. There's two : Fergie and Joseph

But someone said Luke covered Angel Don't Cry during the KoD tours ? I haven't heard that one.

Assuming that is correct, then it is just Joe.
