oh i agree.......the tour stats, or at least the ones posted by toph show averages of about 4000 per night.
even to me with styx and foreigner that seems pretty light.
BUT
here's my thing.......all bands have up tours and down tours......im not sure what the expectations for this tour were.....maybe to the bands and promoters they are selling exactly as they figured and everyone is making good money.
if they are not, it wont be the end....both of these bands will eventually trend back up a bit for one reason or another and it will be what's it going to be.......as i have stated before......styx is gonna play shows that draw between 4000-8000 per night depending on who they are with.....thats it....probably will never be any better and may never get any worse as long as they can put on a good show.
but i dont put alot of weight on a bands future because of one particular tour. when KISS toured behind "creatures of the night" Paul Stanley said he could literally flip his pick over the heads of the entire audience many nights on that tour and they were playing arenas and drawing less than 2500 people times. scary to think of.....but they survived.
styx drew huge in 96 and just one year later with dennis still in the band on the grand illusion 97 tour the attendance had dropped WAY off from what it was in 96 on the times I had seen them. why? because i think in 96 it was an event.....styx was back together....the big 3 etc......the timing was great and they had a massive tour.
in 97 the new had worn off a bit and the crowd size dropped dramatically because at that point it wasnt an event and they had likely played that market in the past 15 months.
fast forward 15+ years later and you have a band that has saturated the markets they play over and over again every single year and the the nucleus of the band is still and perhaps forever splintered.
it's like anything else.......all things pretty much run their course and the popularity that styx, dennis and all those bands have today likely represent what it will be for the foreseeable future.
