Another year, more stupidity...

The RNR HOF announced its new members yesterday..No Styx, Journey, Foreigner, Boston, REO Speedwagon, Kansas, etc. A totally excluded major era of music. How many albums sold by all these bands combined?

As long as Jann Wenner's in charge, none of those bands will make it into the Hall of Shame. The whole thing has gotten to be such a joke and so off the mark from its initial intentions. When the Hall first opened, I went many times and it was an incredible place that really honored the legends of rock. Now, it's an embarrassment.

Joan Jett surprises me. Not that I dislike her or anything, I just don't see her fitting any criteria that would warrant induction. The biggest would be influence and next album sales.

Joan Jett was a founder of The Runaways...the first all girl hard rock band to really hit it big in any way...and then of course she had a good solo career. IMO, she, Pat Benatar, Grace Slick, and Patti Smith (Pretenders) should all be in there before any of the bands Toph mentioned. They were all early pioneers for woman in rock....which means a LOT more, IMO, than having a lot of hits.

the RnRHoF is meaningless anyway...it's all politics to get in. It means about as much as getting a star on the Hollywood WoF.

I think Journey and Foreigner belong. For both sales and influence. Styx, though one of my favorite 3 bands unfortunately don't meet either IMO. Wish they were though but I get why.

I think that by Styx being the first act\band to ever have 4 multi platinum albums in a row justifies a nomination. You do not accomplish something like that without having people really liking what you have done.

Journey has more album sales than Styx, but Foreigner and Styx are pretty similar in terms of albums success.

Styx has a number of reasons that they should get in;
- The triple platinum stat mentioned earlier
- The influence and combination of rock and theater
- Their (arguably) invention of the power ballad
- Longevity - Top 10 hits in 3 different decades (4 different presidential administrations)
- 8 Top 10 Singles
- 5 top 5 Albums
- The sheer variety in their music. As DDY says, you play Renegade, Babe, and Roboto and say its from the same group. No one would ever believe you. Ad Suite Madame Blue and Boat on the River to that list and tell me that is the same group.

This is not far fetched as Monkey Boy wants you to believe.

Albums, singles, and popularity are not good enough reasons to be in a ROR HOF. By using that criteria, everybody from the Monkees to Justin Bieber would have a chance. I guess some still do, but not because they deserve it.

You can better argue for the influence of rock and theater for Alice Cooper and Kiss. I don't see Styx having anywhere near as much of an influence as that. People like Marilyn Manson are just reincarnations of Alice Cooper...in the same way that Slipknot is a reincarnation of Kiss. I don't see that type thing happening for Styx. Even a band like Genesis with Peter Gabriel and his theatrics has a better chance than Styx. Then there is Pink Floyd and the Who both of which did a MUCH better job of story telling with their albums. Kirloy vs. Tommy? Kilroy vs. The Wall or Dark Side of the Moon? Dennis and Stys showed a half-assed way of doing rock operas and storytelling...and the Who and Pink Floyd showed how it is done right - and ageless and timeless...and they did it first.

Ironically, YOUR arguments against Styx over the years are huge reasons why they will never be in the HOF. They became an 80's pop band. Their rock side eventually became overshadowed by ballads and theater. So, you have a HOF already biased against that era, and you add in all of the above and I don't see it ever happening.

But, the VERY simple fact is that politics will keep them out. Even Dennis knows that.

Journey is sometimes credited with inventing the power ballad...but the truth is they perfected it to the point where every rock album released in the 80's had to have their ballad. Escape assured that. Journey somehow were able to walk a fine line between a rock song and a ballad..it seems all of the singles off of Escape walked that line...and it continued in Fronteirs.

But, Journey also invented the modern rock concert experience. There was a point in the 80's where other bands were using Journey's equipment...even bands like the Stones and U2. Journey did the huge video screens before any other band. In fact, Herbie and Neal Schon probably made as much money from Nocturn as they did from Journey. Journey, well, Herbie Herbert - STARTED THAT INDUSTRY.

Kiss had a pinball machine. Journey had a video game

"Don't Stop Believin" is a song that never dies...talk about longevity. DSB could stand alongside any of the other timeless songs in rock, it's EARNED it...it wasn't just given to it by the press.

But, even with all of that influence...it still won't happen because of politics.

I completely agree. It's unfortunate, but it's fact.

I'm relieved that Genesis and Fleetwood Mac made it in because if they hadn't been inducted when they were... I'm afraid they wouldn't have been at all.
