30 years - We Are the world Why didn't DDY/TS participate

Postby Toph » Fri Feb 06, 2015 2:08 pm

Check out Article from usatoday on we are the world 30th anniversary. Always wondered why DDY or Tommy didn't participate in this. It would have been a boon to their solo careers. Think about it, their first solo albums had just been out a few months - in fact they were probably still on the charts then. Anyone know why they didn't participate?

I'm just guessing here, they weren't asked to participate.

They were invited to attend but when Dennis tried to put a little snippet of Roboto into the mix Michael Jackson threatened to kick Tommy's ass and Styx was sent packing. You can read the entire article here; www.usastyxjacksonkicksshawsrobotoasswearetheworld.com

I thought it was a snippet of First Time because DDY was still pissed that it wasn't released as the second single off CS.

No Boom you are way off on this one. As much as many of the Styx(DDY) haters want to ALWAYS put the blame on everything with 'First Time' that's not the case here.

Actually looking at the past BETA recording I have of the original We Are The World recording session(purchased off of E-Bay for $1,500) I am wrong too. You have to listen closely but you can surely hear it. As soon as Steve Perry finishes his short part of the song you can hear the utterance of 'no deviance Kilroy'. So that isn't even Roboto but in fact it's 'High Time'.
Then I think Michael Jackson thinks its Tommy trying to Styxify this song. Michael threatens to go get his chimp or an umbrella(its hard to understand Michael at this point) and kick 'Tommy's narrow little as.' When Tommy & JY start laughing over all of this all hell breaks loose that's when my recording cuts out.

It was in the USA Today paper, and Rolling Slime also covered it. MTV completely missed it that's why I was willing to pay $$$$ for this. I think I purchased 1 of only 3 or 4 actual recordings of this event. I know I'm the ONLY one who has it on BETA.

It's wild.

That's damn near as funny as my actual recording. That's a classic.

Steve Perry and Lindsay Buckingham were the only Rock Band singers (that did not front their band) Springsteen, Huey Lewis, ect that sang, (none even in the chrorus)

The keyboard player from Toto was on the song but only played music.

Thought it was odd Neal Schon was in HEaring Aid, But IIRC everyone said he was the best soloist.

If you listen to the single (was it Stars? Can't remember), Neal's guitar was used more than anybody else. Also, if you watch the documentary, Neal DOES sound better then everybody else...easily.
