WITH ALL DUE RESPECT I DON’T SEE HOW....

Postby yogi » Tue Jun 23, 2020 5:43 am

You could of EVER been a Styx fan and not see the brilliance of both 26 East and The Mission.

Did Dennis ABSOLUTELY get slandered by Tommy, JY & Chuck who then somehow used their lies to steal Styx from him ? Did they do this at a time when Dennis was sick & at his lowest? Yes & Yes !!

Do Tommy, JY & Chuck have EVERY right to play & record music under the name of Styx ? Can Tommy, JY & Chuck play & record music with any person on the face of the earth under the title of Styx? Yes & Yes!!

Is 26 East by Dennis Deyoung a GREAT GREAT album?? YES

Is The Mission by Styx a GREAT album?? Yes!!

Does this not prove how brilliant Dennis, Tommy, JY & Chuck truly are?? Yes!!

Back in the day I’m sure he lied to many friends & the press to cover for Tommy’s many indulgences.

No good deed ever goes unpunished.

Dennis just posted a lie. Where is a link the REAL charts, no bullshit Amazon "top sellers". I don't think you can give one.

Yes I know that I pointed it out that I couldn’t find 26 E on the Billboard Charts.

Still the Billboard 200 and all their charts have been pretty much total fiction since the late 1990’s / 2000’s. It’s a lot of guesswork on their part. I know this for a fact

Typical.You side stepped the question.
I asked if Dennis could have lied, at some point or other, to the rest of Styx, for his own benefit.?

How could I ever know that?
Maybe Dennis lied 10 times
JY lied 20 times
and Tommy lied 6 times
Chuck had one big one I’m sure but who cares???

The one I care about and know of for a fact was the HUGE lie they told almost 20 years after the fact about what happened at the Texas Jamm in Dallas. They told it PUBLICLY to spin a narrative and make Dennis look like a total jerk. They told it as a way to oust him from the band he founded along with the Panozzo brothers. They told it when he was sick. They told it at a time that had not he been sick he would of been out touring with them and still in HIS band Styx. They told it after they had successfully reunited for The Return To Paradise Album & Tour and The Grand Illusion 25 Anniversary Tour. They told this HUGE public lie less than a year after Dennis helped his ‘friend’ Tommy out at Tommy’s massive Borders Tour in Chicago. They told this lie after they all agreed to make the a new album Brave New World.

They told this MASSIVE public lie about the Texas Jam so they wouldn’t lose money waiting for their band mate to recover. They continued this lie so Tommy & JY could control the band, it’s setlist, all future gigs, and make far more money HIRING Gowan, paying DDY a small % than they would make by giving DDY his full cut.

None of this shit was a problem at all with them in 96-early 99 until DDY got sick and asked for time to get well before he committed to a tour.

I’m a fan of current Styx even now. I loved the Mission album. I loved Cyclorama and am a huge Burtnik fan as well. Have purchase all of Glens CDs. Welcome to Hollywood is one of my favs. I’ve purchased Gowan’s solo CDs. Have seen them close to a dozen times since the 99 split. Hell their bands good, they are extremely talented.

BUT what they did to Dennis is still one of the shittiest, lowdown , cut throat things anyone could ever do to a once friend and teammate. They literally stole a guys life works. That’s exactly what they did. You can say anything you want about it but as talented as Tommy, JY, Glen, Larry, Chuck, Ricky & Todd are Dennis was the one who stirred the drink. Tommy & JY got a taste of what it was to be the one stirring and they wanted it for themselves. They fucked Dennis by telling that HUGE Behind the Music lie. It was 4 VS 1 if you include Chuck & Cahil so how could the 4 be lying??? They had the perfect way to steal his band and they executed their lies like the professionals they are.

Sure it's shit for the victim, no doubt, but I keep thinking, that over the later years Dennis was being too much of a dictator.
The rest of the band slowly but surely had enough.Dennis' 'problem' was used as an excuse to get rid of him.If he hadn't had his eye problem ,they would get rid of him another time.
Rock'n'Roll tactics.

Yea he was a ‘dictator’ because he was holding up deposits into their checking account. HE GOT SICK.

I’m making a pretty damn good guess here but I would guess by the time Dennis was well enough to tour JY and Tommy figured out
1. Gowan’s a really good dude
2. Even though we are playing @ Arby’s & paying DDY a %, by hiring all these other dudes we are making close to what we make if Dennis was here, NOW:
2a. If we start playing Burger King, What a Burger & Chick Filet( in the south ) plus a McDonalds and play 4 to 5 nights a weak we can make more money. DDY won’t play these venues be we can.
2b. I bet if we add someone like REO we can play roller rinks and cheese curd festivals.
3. Shit we get to control the set list.
4. JY tells Tommy I’ll even throw in that you can even do the ‘ sequencing ‘ on Brave New World and future albums.
5.......,.,,,,,
6...........,,,,
7......,..,,,.,,
I’m sure this goes to like 25 or so
But it ends with now we’ve got to get the loyal true blue Styx fans on board. We can do that by spinning a narrative. Chuck won’t say shit cause he’s sick and he never like Dennis that much anyway Cahil can help, here’s what we will do..........

Now here come the lies to discredit Dennis
1. First off instead of Dennis being our leader let’s make him a tyrant.
2. Let’s bring up again Babe
3. Now let’s finish him off with Kilroy

Now I’m sure their conversation ended with something like shit if we do this right we could even end up with the Styx brand and the band would be ours. If Dennis sues it’s 3 against 1 they should believe us.

Well, now you are just making shit up like a hater.

I don't think they lied about the Jam. I think Tommy saw Sammy and Ted end their show and knew Styx was going to follow it was a Broadway musical. As it took an hour to set up - as you said - and he saw people leaving he felt he knew why - because Kilroy was not in the same league as what the prior bands played. So, as in the article I posted, he told Sammy and Ted that this was when he quit Styx...and it was an embarrassment for him to perform it night after night. He ended it when he put his hand through glass. The memory of this type of embarrassing fiasco doesn't just "end".

The entire idea that Dennis put Styx on hold to wait for Tommy is just such bullshit. Just like Tommy, he signed a three album solo contract. In the end, they had no choice but to put Styx on hiatus. Kilroy killed Styx...everybody should know that.

JY and Tommy want to tour. Sitting out a year is a loss of income. I don't think Tommy was hurting for money. I think Tommy, and JY, wanted to work and Dennis wanted to do Hunchback. So, IMO, this idea that he did the second short tour as a "favor" is just ridiculous. I think the band was getting frustrated and pissed at him even at this point. Then he started trying to take control of BNW...wanting to delay the album, etc. Then he added a Hunchback song to it, which *I* think was stupid. Then he said he couldn't tour because because he had something that nobody could diagnose...I think JY said something in the BTM about if the doctors can't even tell what's wrong with you, what are they supposed to do? Put their careers and lives on hold yet again? By that time, I think they had enough and started moving on without him.

As for your numbered points below, that's just hate talk. Whenever you replace a dominating member of a band it is a risk. It was a risk they were not willing to take prior to PT. But, they were not at the peak of their career with the release of BNW. So, moving on without Dennis was not such a big deal. They did not have this guy holding a veto over their heads at all times. They had a band who WANTED to tour. They had a band that got along without any drama. They were, and are, in a much better situation without Dennis than with him. That is why they do not want a reunion...no more dealing with all of the drama that Dennis brings with him.

I’m not hating one damn bit. I think the band now calling themselves ‘Styx’ is very very talented and really good. I’ve seen them close to a dozen times and purchased every album they put out since DDY’s ouster.

That doesn’t change the fact that they totally fucked Dennis over and stole Styx from him by slandering him and making him out to be a dictating tyrant. They lied and twisted a story to fit an agenda regarding the Dallas portion of the Texas Jam. I’m sure they also lied about the Houston portion of the Texas Jam but since I didn’t see the Houston show I won’t comment on it.,

With Dennis from 95 - 99 they recut Lady, did two successful tours, cut another album BNW and were all on board to do another tour when Dennis informed them he couldn’t commit to the BNW tour because he was sick and no one could figure out what was wrong. These are all undisputed facts

In regards to the Kilroy Was Here concert, minus the movie and the plot of the Kilroy show the actual Kilroy concert was pretty much the same greatest hits show they have always played. With Kilroy they just inserted a plot into their concert. They added 4-5 songs from the Kilroy Was Here album dropped a few from older albums and put on concert.

Styx was never heavy metal like Hagar, Nugent & Triumph. NEVER. Hell they didn’t even play Heavy Metal Poisoning at the Dallas show. That’s probably their heaviest song. To me it seems like Tommy and JY were scared shitless because they were following some heavy metal acts.

And they pussed out.

I'm fairly certain there's an In The Studio with Redbeard interview with Dennis + JY from the Kilroy tour where Dennis fully admits he 'dragged' the band into the project and that they weren't really keen on it but he really appreciated that they went along with it and promised that was it, next album isn't going to be any of this theatrics. Then Tommy quit and Dennis "the dictator" wanted to wait because he felt the Styx brand included Tommy Shaw (who of course was by then an incredibly important member of the band).

I get why JY looks at Dennis and says "that guy tried to screw my career multiple times" because all JY wants to do is rock out and his paycheque mostly comes from touring.

I know by the time RTP/BMW came around, everyone had a vote (Chuck mentions this in an interview, after John died he ended up being the deciding vote in kicking Dennis out or waiting for him to get better).. Did they all have a vote in 1984 when JY, Chuck and John apparently wanted to keep Styx going but Dennis wanted to wait for Tommy? That's 3-1 right there... but somehow Dennis is a controlling dictator.

I'm also still curious about the time they kicked Dennis out of the band in '78 or '79 for 5 weeks but then asked him back when they couldn't find a suitable replacement. Apparently when he came back form that, not only was he hurt by the fact that they all wanted rid of him but he gained their agreement that he would get to direct the band moving forward. Years later it seems Tommy and JY like to omit that entire from their "Dennis is a dictator" story.

I love Styx, I've seen them 11 times without Dennis and I'll see them again, I did quite enjoy The Mission overall. It just really saddens me that there has been a 20+ year campaign to discredit and demean Dennis. I'm not sure if it has to do with the lawsuit settlement, but the fact that Styx goes out of their way to ensure Dennis isn't talked about historically other than "he was a dictator" in interviews I think is more personal than anything. They usually post about album releases on the anniversary date. Last year they made a post about BNW, but this year it was radio silence.. Hmm, maybe because Dennis has a new album and has been more open in interviews recently?

Except he DID NOT wait for Tommy. He himself signed a three album solo deal. That's not waiting around for Tommy to come back to Styx...that is going solo the same as Tommy did. When Tommy wanted to come back to Styx and called Dennis to get Styx back together, Dennis refused to commit to it because of Boomchild. Tommy called him THREE TIMES to talk about Styx and each time Dennis had an excuse to not commit. In the last phone call, Tommy told him about Nugent and Jack Blades wanting to start a band...and Dennis TOLD HIM to go for that. Then, when Dennis was free, he saw that everybody was talking again and he decided to move on without Tommy.

All of this new propaganda about Dennis bending over to be nice to Tommy is just such bullshit. Dennis was looking out for himself...he went solo when Styx broke up, he started Styx back up on HIS schedule. And, all of this is ACCORDING TO DENNIS in interviews ON THIS WEBSITE.

I know by the time RTP/BMW came around, everyone had a vote (Chuck mentions this in an interview, after John died he ended up being the deciding vote in kicking Dennis out or waiting for him to get better).. Your right, it doesn't make sense...especially when both Dennis and JY also started solo careers. The entire idea that Dennis wanted to wait around for Tommy is bullshit. THE BAND BROKE UP. There was no reason to vote because there was no Styx.

I'm also still curious about the time they kicked Dennis out of the band in '78 or '79 for 5 weeks but then asked him back when they couldn't find a suitable replacement. This just not what has been said. According to the BTM, after they took Dennis back, he became even more demanding and controlling and they went right into writing /recording yet another concept album with PT. The band didn't AGREE to give him control, he took just took it.

And, Dennis was "hurt"? Bullshit. He was pissed that the rest of the band had the arrogance to fire HIM...and why he took the reigns and held on even tighter.

It just really saddens me that there has been a 20+ year campaign to discredit and demean Dennis.

Sorry that the truth hurts.

I'm not sure if it has to do with the lawsuit settlement, but the fact that Styx goes out of their way to ensure Dennis isn't talked about historically other than "he was a dictator" in interviews I think is more personal than anything.

They fired his ass. Frankly, they shouldn't talk about him at all....espeiclally since he took them to court. Obviously, they should avoid giving him any reason to do it again.

They usually post about album releases on the anniversary date. Last year they made a post about BNW, but this year it was radio silence.. Hmm, maybe because Dennis has a new album and has been more open in interviews recently?

And, "Killing the Thing That You Love'" was written about Dennis, too. Wild conspiracy theories with no basis to stand on.

First of all, Hagar and Nugent are NOT "heavy metal". They are just hard rock.

But, your point stands. Styx had no business sharing a stage with bands that are so far away from the theatrics of Styx.

Back then they were heavy metal ( Nugent & Hagar), now not so much.

I agree that those might not of been the best bands to play before Styx but then again at the time Styx was the one selling
the tickets. No way of knowing but I’d be willing to bet of the of the 30,000 to 45,000 that stayed to watch the Kilroy show 95% of them LOVED it. Everyone I was with and those packed around me sure did.

The thousands that left BEFORE Styx even took the stage were either dead ass worn out, pissed because alcohol sales were cut off or knew that Styx would NEVER ‘rock’ like the previous acts.

At the time 1983 no other act that was on that bill could of sold the 55,000+ seats. Not Hagar, not Nugent, not Triumph..... Styx was NEVER heavy like those acts.

Don't know if you have read Sterling's book on Styx ??
There are several references to Dennis being quite ehh headstrong .
I can see, if that happened on a regular basis, why, they would have had enough.
Along with all the other stuff of course.
The Dennis lovers here, generally feel that this source,is a lie,and a conspiracy against Dennis, again.

Fellow readers of Melodic Rock.......

Please read this carefully. When Tommy called Dennis about the offer to do demos with Jack Blades and Ted Nugent, Dennis simply said “go and do it” but he was referring to demos, not form a band and get a record deal. Read it it’s right there. The next time he heard from Tommy was when he called to say they had gotten a record offer from John Kalodner and he was taking it. Despite Dennis’s so called dictatorial ways he didn’t forbid him from participating in the demos, how could he, in fact what mysterious power did Dennis ever have over 4 grown men? None. Dictators have guns and soldiers, Dennis had nothing to threaten them with, nothing. Yet they willingly followed him because he had been right so many times and their bank accounts proved it. JY’s words before replacing him, “Dennis believed in us always and told us we’d be a success someday even when the rest of us didn’t believe it”.

JY words after replacing him, “It was always his way or the highway”. What does that mean, that Dennis could fire them? No, what was his power, it was successful leadership. Dennis unlike Steve Perry-never tried to replace a member. Did he have compromising photo’s? No. When it comes to the highway Dennis is always the one on it. Why didn’t JY and the Panozzo’s just go to Tommy after Kilroy and suggest firing Dennis instead? It was after all Dennis’s idea. Because they knew the problem. It was Tommy Shaw.

In order to finish the Kilroy tour Tommy demanded the band provide him money so he and Jim Cahill could travel around the country to promote his upcoming solo album to radio. Styx had no choice, so thousands of dollars were given by Styx to Tommy. How about that. That’s a fact.

The straw wasn’t Kilroy, that’s a smokescreen it was always drugs and alcohol abuse and a grandiose notion of Tommy’s that solo stardom was calling him. Need more proof, why was Tommy the only one to quit? They all experienced the same album and tour. In fact JY and Dennis were planning a stadium tour for 1984 with a live album. Dennis promised JY the tour for his support for Kilroy. Why were the others so adamant about replacing Tommy. Because they knew the truth. Still Dennis defended Tommy’s importance to the band not JY, John or Chuck.

I watched the KWH show where TS quit recently. It's interesting to see the breakdown. Most tense Styx show ever. The chemistry on stage was ... not there between DDY and TS And no, it's not posted everywhere. :) Don't ask.

None of the tours they did after the original Main Event could of they competed with the hard hard rocking Triumph, followed by Nugent followed by pre Van Halen Hagar. They were not that type of rock band.
Maybe with this setlist:
The Grand Illusion
Lorelei
Shooz
Born For Adventure
Rockin The Paradise
Midnight Ride
Light Up
Blue Collar Man
Suite Madame Blue
Too Much Time On My Hands
Miss America
Queen of Spades
Heavy Metal Poisoning
Fooling Yourself
Castle Walls
Snowblind
Half Penny Two Penny
Crystal Ball
Lady
Renegade
Come Sail Away

I’d love a set like this. I don’t know if the 50,000 + fans would have. Too many deep cuts and once again the the majority of the thousands that left were out the door before Styx even took the stage.

If you watched the Dallas TX Jam show and you have volume up after the Hagar/Emmett/ Nugent Led Zeppelin cover encore you should be hearing the PA announcer announce something like ‘in accordance with Texas Law ........(Texas Blue Laws) the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages will now end immediately’. ”Alcoholic beverages will no longer be sold or consumed on State Fair property’. Minutes after the crowd stopped frantically cheering they started booing. Then droves of people started heading to the parking lot. Styx wasn’t even close to taking the stage @ this point.

I’m pretty sure that the Dallas portion of the Jam came first. I believe the went to Houston the next night.

I have not, but yes it seems to have all kinds of tidbits ;)

I did find a quote out of the Sterling book where by 1993 Tommy had said he never wanted to be in Styx again and had actually sold of his share in the band (I'm guessing in 1995 it was a new partnership? did he buy back into Styx?)

https://www.prweb.com/releases/styx/the ... 533578.htm

"What's interesting about this interview is that it was done in 1993, at a time when Tommy had actually allowed the other members of Styx to buy him out of his participation in the name," says author Sterling Whitaker. "It was a great time to get the truth from him, because he had nothing to lose and nobody to protect. At that time he made it clear to me that he never, ever wanted to play with Styx again. He actually said to me, 'They would have to hold my daughter hostage, and playing with them again would be the ransom'. What's really funny about that is, about a year and half later he reunited with Styx to re-record 'Lady' for the Greatest Hits record, and he's been back with Styx ever since!" Whitaker says with a laugh. "That just goes to show you what strange bedfellows the music business creates. Styx has always been a volatile mix of personalities."

I’ve read Sterlings book. If I’m correct Dennis had zero involvement in it. No quotes from him, nothing. Isn’t that correct? Didn’t it come out after they split? I’ve got it in our house somewhere I’m just not sure where it is.

IIRC he used publicly available quotes for DDY. I know DDY was approached but apparently declined to be part of things so Sterling used what he could. Sterling would have to confirm or deny.

Back on topic, I've been on record as not really loving The Mission (definitely not GREAT). 26 East is better, but IMO not DDY's best work (so not GREAT GREAT).

Brilliant is a stretch for either album.

Monker, Queen of denial, "He doesn't think" that's for sure Yogi you were there (the Texxas Jam) but that doesn’t count because the “queen” is too busy covering for JY and Tommy as always because if he doesn’t he exposes his dupedom to all of us. But it’s far too late for that BATHWATER drinker. Gulp Gulp Gulp.

JY, Tommy and Cahill lied flat out, straight up about the Cotton Bowl to cover up the fact that they were replacing a sick colleague and preparing to grab power and money. Telling everyone on TV that Styx fans were stupid for buying the Kilroy was Here album or tickets to the concert, Mr. Roboto the song, Caught in the Act and Babe.

Tommy just wants to be happy and now he is, Styx is his plaything just check all the current vanity projects, he’s in charge now and JY disappears and does what he’s told. But Queenie dupe can’t see it or admit, foggy goggles.

Monker..... Actually Tommy lied in that article you’re so proud of about deciding to quit after Dallas since he had already quit June 2 in Landover and Dallas was the 18th. Check your facts. Although considering Tommy’s condition who knows what he remembers.

Fact: Dennis put Styx on hold to wait for Tommy. Had he not, there would have been a new member and a new Styx in 1984 and a stadium tour as per the other members wishes.

I have the Dennis interviews for Desert Moon where he repeatedly said that he didn’t want to be a solo artist and that he liked being in a band it’s public record. In addition, I have a lot of articles and interviews, in print and recorded.

After Tommy quit he asked A&M about doing a solo album. Then they offered Dennis a chance to make an album as well and he did. Why shouldn’t he? According to Monker the world should stop because his hero Tommy says so, grow up. The Panozzo’s and JY got no such offer from A&M. Why? They had to wait or fund their own record.

After "Girls With Guns" Shaw then began work on "What if" in 1985 and Dennis realized he was not coming back after one album so he began working on "Back To The World".
Tommy waited till he was out of album deals before he called Dennis. Why? Jobless.
Except for the time when he called Dennis to apologize to him for all the wrong he had done to him as part of his 12 step recovery program for addiction. Dennis accepted.

By the way Monker, capitalizing “THREE TIMES” he called Dennis, becomes justification in your mind for being an addict and ruining Styx and literally stopping the members from earning millions of dollars and staying away for years chasing the “tiger beat teens”. Tommy called THREE TIMES, everyone stop everything He called.

So you claim that when Tommy, who’s now out of work calls Dennis after 4 and a half years out of the blue Dennis, JY and the Panozzo’s should snap to attention. Tommy does have you wound around his little finger Monker.

“Kilroy killed Styx”?????? NO JY and the Panozzo's wanted to go forward without Tommy. Again it was drug and alcohol abuse by one member on an ego trip.

On BTM Tommy he says he had to self medicate because of Robots it’s is another lie. He had been self medicating since 1977.

These are facts.

Forgot about that one.Thanks.

Check this one out.Copying from Sterling's book:
Todd observes,
The interaction between Tommy and Dennis was definitely tense. They were of in a corner and I could hear a lot of things being said, a lot of accusations and everything that goes along with that.It was nothing that concerned me and I just wanted to get the hell out of there.Dennis was doing most of the talking. At one point Dennis was doing all of the talking, and Tommy was just standing there letting him go.He had this look on his face like," This is the last time you will ever do this to me".As far as I know, that's the last time anyone in the band spoke to him.

And Tommy was true to his word.Good for you Tommy.

So Tommy had already quit before the Tx Jamm shows in Dallas ( that I attended) and the next night in Houston??

Those shows were toward the end of June if I remember correctly. I remember because, we had just started playing summer baseball in Shreveport. Sutton Sub Service was our sponsor. Hal Sutton ( former professional golfer) his family’s company sponsored us. We had played at La.Tech in Ruston, La the week before the TX Jam, and the week prior to that we opened & played NE LA at the Shreveport Captains field. So The TX Jamm was probably the 3rd weekend in June. Your telling me that Tommy quit & mailed it in 2 weeks prior to the Jamm’s shows????

The BTM episode sure made it out to be that Tommy quit after seeing Hagars performance and then watching thousands of fans walking out on Styx during their TX Jamm performances in Dallas & Houston. Tommy & Cahil sure said it. Cahil said it was heartbreaking. What a bunch of fuc.ing liars they are. I guess the facts are that Tommy quit weeks earlier and people were not leaving because the Styx show sucked, most that did leave left long before the show even started.

I love Tommy Shaw’s musical talent but he’s a wuss punk for lying about this 15 years after the fact to steal a guys band. Tommy, JY and Chuck should be ashamed of themselves.
