Tonight’s the night

Postby Archetype » Sun Aug 15, 2021 3:50 am

Heading up to Hamburg, NY shortly to see Styx this evening. Very excited. First time since GI/PoE in 2010. Really hoping they play Red Storm and all the COTC stuff they’ve been playing.

Very busy day today, but I’ll share my thoughts ASAP. What I’ll say now is that it’s easily the best Styx concert I’ve attended. They’re absolutely killing it out there.

The show was absolutely outstanding. Lawrence in particular was extremely engaged with the audience. Lots of banter between songs, and he mentioned his love for the Buffalo area as it related to growing up just north of the border. He was extremely entertaining and often hilarious in his remarks. He was extremely well received, and he was just at the top of his game, showmanship-wise. Tommy was also extremely engaged. He told a story about writing Too Much Time On My Hands. Now JY- I paid specific attention to him in light of claims made by certain delusional and obsessive members here on this forum. All the claims that he’s “miserable” and everything are 100% bullshit. JY was as engaged as I’ve ever seen him, perhaps even to a greater extent given the longer set list and more opportunities to talk. He was smiling frequently and playing with an intensity that few other 71 year olds could muster. He was also mouthing the lyrics to a lot of songs as he was playing. He talked a few times with the audience and showed nothing but passion, enthusiasm, and joy to be there. Anyone who makes claims about him otherwise is a lying shit talker. Todd and Ricky were world-class players as always. Todd plays with an intensity and level of precision that few other drummers worldwide can come close to achieving. The man is an absolute professional. Got to hear Ricky sing a line of Miss America. He does sound quite similar to JY as he has stated before. And now Will. I’ll call him the kid in a candy shop. That’s his vibe. He just looks happy and sort of shocked to be there. His playing and vocals definitely add a rich element to the show. The way he sometimes harmonizes the guitar parts is just exquisite. They were great before, but Will brings a lot to the table and just makes a great thing even better. Tommy’s voice is better than it has ever been. His high notes during Man In The Wilderness were just jaw-dropping. Everyone was giving it 110% and playing and singing to perfection.

The new music comes across extremely well live, and they played a lot of it. My personal highlight of the night was Red Storm. The sky was perfect for it with an orange/pink color and retreating sun and emergence of some stars. It really created a moment, and Lawrence’s outro keyboard lines were absolutely compelling. They extended Reveries quite a bit with an organ solo jam at the end. Even Sound The Alarm, which I really don’t enjoy on the album, is a great live tune as well. The addition of so much new music to the set even made the older music feel less repetitive. I had stopped attending Styx concerts for the last roughly 11 years because I was tired of the same songs over and over. They certainly fixed that issue this year.

The the detractors, go to a show. That’s all I’ll say on that. Styx will rock you and then some. The show was extremely well-attended, and this is despite the fact that Billy Joel and Luke Bryan were both playing at different venues at the same time, all within about 20 miles of each other. Not a soul was whining about Dennis. Just thousands of happy, screaming fans.

Set list:

The Fight Of Our Lives
Blue Collar Man
The Grand Illusion
Lady
Reveries
Light Up
Too Much Time On My Hands
Man In The Wilderness
Rockin’ The Paradise
Save Us From Ourselves
Suite Madame Blue
—————————————————————
Red Storm
Miss America
Sound The Alarm
Crystal Ball
Crash Of The Crown
Fooling Yourself
Khedive
Lost At Sea
Come Sail Away
———————————————
Mr. Roboto
Renegade

It sounds awesome!! I'm sure gonna try to make either the Oct 16 show in Arlington or the Oct 23 show in Austin. Maybe both. My son goes to school @ SMU ( Dallas ) my daughter attends TX State ( San Marcos). See which one can bribe me the best.

I highly recommend both. I wish they were playing again in my area.

I hope both, but Austin, TX is 5 hours from me and Arlington/ Dallas only 2.5. I’m heading to Austin in Sept to see Staind with my daughter. I’ll surely try to see both shows.
