Well here is a new idea for a thread

Tell your story about the first time you ever heard Styx
Where were you
Who were you with ,
And The first time you ever saw them live
Also if you ever met any of the guys.

I will post mine later

This should be an interesting thread - GREAT topic :)

The first Styx song I heard was "You Need Love" on a Chicago am radio station. I immediately liked Styx right away, I was only 7 years old. I still have my very first record, my 45 "You Need Love". Then I started to hear "Lady" and Styx became my favorite band and still is to this day

To be honest, I can't remember when the first time I've seen them live. I've been to pretty many concerts (I'll have to find the ticket stubs). I do remember that I was grounded a lot in high school so I did miss them coming to my town in the early 1980's. I've seen Styx several times and Dennis solo several times.

Let's see, I personally met Dennis, Glen and JY. I've been backstage at a Styx show, no offense to anyone, but I still can't believe how short most of the band is, that was surprising.

I didn't really start listening to music until around 1982. Consequently, the first Styx song I heard on the radio was Mr. Roboto and I hated it from the moment I first heard it. With only the one song to go on, I avoided Kilroy Was Here like the plague and spent my allowance money on other albums. When Don't Let It End started to get some airplay, I thought it was a much better song than Roboto. However, it still wasn't enough for me to give Styx the time of day. Albums consisting of slow and/or dorky songs weren't my thing, and that's what my first impressions of Styx led me to believe they were all about! Kind of funny, in retrospect :D

After moving to Nebraska in 1984, I finally heard Come Sail Away on a classic rock station and fell in love with it. Believe it or not, I was heartbroken to find out it was a Styx song! I was thinking, oh my gosh, I can't possibly like a song by the same group that put out Mr. Roboto! (Keep in mind I was pretty young at the time). Also heard Best Of Times shortly thereafter, and liked it as well, so I broke down and eventually bought Grand Illusion and Paradise Theater. I found GI to be different from anything I'd heard before and liked all the songs, but half of the time just fast-forwarded to CSA. On Paradise Theater, the only songs I initially liked were Best Of Times, She Cares, and Half-Penny (that's changed through the years). Those were the only Styx albums I had for years, and I grew to like them more and more as time went by.

When I finally started to really get into Styx was after going to a Damn Yankees show during the 90-01 tour. Up until then I had never spent a whole lot of time looking at the Styx album liner notes, and I didn't even make the connection that Tommy Shaw of Damn Yankees was also a guy from Styx. I also didn't realize until after the show that Renegade was a Styx song (that I really liked but had no clue who sang it). Anyway, fell in love with the Damn Yankees sound, and started pursuing the Styx, Night Ranger, and Nugent catalogs, paying particular attention to the Shaw-penned tunes. Shortly thereafter, I finally started regarding myself as a "Styx fan", and the rest is history, as they say.

My first show was during the RTP tour. I went with my wife. What a dream come true it was, since I'd convinced myself I'd never have the chance to see a Styx show!

I've never met any of the guys, but I'm not real big on meeting celebrities, so even if I would've had the chance, I probably wouldn't have taken it. I'm just content to have offered my anonymous support through the years :D

P.S. Years later I found out that I was right not to waste my allowance money on Kilroy

1998, I was in eigth grade, Latin. The teacher was always going on about Greek myths and such and started talking about Achilles and the river Styx. He also said they were a band in the eighties.

For some reason I remembered the Greatest hits cd cover in the store, I also heard Mr. Roboto on the Volkswagon ad. So i pretty much bought greatest hits because of Mr. Roboto. Then I started listening to the other songs and something about the music just grabbed me, it was so different from the music of the time, so overproduced, and melodic. I think it was the vocals that really got me, because nobody in rock sings like that anymore, everybody just screams.

First time I saw them it was with Reo, on their first Arch-Allies tour in 2000. When I first heard that Dennis was not going to be their I was very upset. "What no Dennis, this great singer, entertainer, creative person is not gonna be there!"

The first time I heard Styx was in 78 at a visit to my grandparents house. My Uncle had just seen them live at the Liverpool Empire and was playing Grand Illusion, I was 13 yrs old and into bands like Yes, Genesis, Purple etc, I was blown away!!!!!. I think the first song I heard was Castle Walls (still one of my favorites) I later got my parents to buy me the LP for my 14th birthday later that year, don't think they ever came back "up north" to tour ( only returning in 80 +81 for one or two dates in london) so never got to see them live.
It was another 24yrs ,after overcoming a lifelong fear of flying, on a holiday to orlando in 2002, that they rescheduled a few dates slap bang in the middle of my stay (DOES ANYONE BELIEVE IN FATE!!!) that my dream finally came true. So on May 11 2002 I drove to clearwater , checked into a cheap motel, and saw the best rock band perform the best show I have ever seen, from my 8th row seat just yards away from Tommy Shaw. I will remember that night for the rest of my life, such an emotional time
So Tommy I'm back in Orlando last week in april, first week in May, you are in FL first week in April, if ya gonna get sick again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never got to see the classic lineup. I did however see them during the EOTC tour. While that wasn't the same as seeing the classic lineup, I did enjoy the show.

As for meeting any of the band, the only one I've met is Dennis and it was a really great experience. :D

I saw them for the first time on Don Kirschner's rock concert. They did Fooling Yourself, Miss America and I think Come Sail Away. I saw them live for the first time on 4-13-81 on the Paradise Theater tour. Ya'll know the Largo Maryland show that is always poppin' up on eBay? I was there at that show.

First Time I heard Styx was my brother purchased the 45 of Lady ( Children of The Land ) was on the back. I ended up stealing it from him and still have the 45 to this day.

A few years later I heard the song Suite Madame Blue on KQRS 92.5 Minneapolis/St. Paul. I was then officially hooked on the band. I saved up all my money and biked to Cheapo Records and purchased Equinox.I literally played the album until side 2 was so scratched that I went and purchased the casette. It was the first album I ever bought. It seemed in no time I then heard Come Sail Away on the radio.

First Styx concert I saw was in 1978 Minnesota State Fair The Main Event Styx & New England.

Around 2001 I heard Mr. Roboto on my brother's Winamp playlist. Then I saw them in concert for the first time on February 9th, 2003. I have met Dennis DeYoung, Tom Sharpe, Ricky Philips, Todd Sucherman, and Lawrence Gowan.

Tom Sharpe

It sad that people on this board don't know of him yet.

First time I heard Styx was at the time of the release of Equinox.
Close to my school was a small record shop that I visited several times a week in my lunch break.
One time as I walk in I hear this frickin mind blowing tune, and had to know what it was .
Equinox of course. To this day it is still my favourite.

A few visits later I got Leftoverture.2 of my all time favourite albums.

First Styx show was on the Cornerstone tour.

Well,thank you for asking.
I picked up the album on a Monday lunch time.
I invented the Jaeger alabaster molotov cocktail on Friday and carried on 'til Sunday noon,
so chances are I was a little queasy by Monday ,yes.

By the time of Cornerstone I was on anti depressants due to the total limpy noodle Babe on said album.
So at that time also,I was in a state.

Yep, what a clunker of an album with the only number one hit in the entire bands history. I'm sure it was really painful cashing the checks from the profits.

When I was younger I remember hearing Mr. Roboto on the radio and thinking it was a cool song because of the robot voice. It still is an awesome song.

Cornerstone in my opinion is a really good album... there are a couple of songs that I don't really like, but that leaves 7 that are great.
