Dennis DeYoung, the new Liberace!

I'm going to have to find out these details. When a band comes to town they're paid a fee. Let's just say $10,000. The band members get a cut, as for Styx it's not split up evenly, this is a fact. Tommy and JY receive more money than the other band members. Todd, Larry and Ricky will receive a cut, but not the same amount as each other. When each member joined the band, they signed a contract, just like baseball. Each member receives a percentage from each concert, sales of the cd's (the ones that contributed to the cd) & t-shirts. The manager/s get a cut, the promoter gets a cut, some venues the band plays has to pay "rent", the road crew (sound guys, lighting people, truck drivers, 2 tour bus drivers, private security) gets paid from this fee. I'm sure there are more people that would get paid from this $10,000 from one concert but those are just examples. After everyone is paid, Ricky, for example, might just make $500.00 per concert.

Also, if a band/artist does not have a tour bus, sometimes they have to pay for their own transportation and hotels.

I will try to find a break down from a band, it may not be Styx, but I'll try to find a well known band - give me a while :)

Oh, I forgot to add, that when a band, say Styx plays a State Fair or an event that's free to the fans to attend, the band is just paid one fee. When a band plays a venue in which tickets are sold, then they receive so much per ticket sold and maybe an additional fee. Every venue has a different contract from one another.

If I'm not mistaken, the band Styx has an attorney and then each band member has an attorney. This is normal for many bands, especially those who have been in the industry for years. So those are additional fees too.

And one more thing in this post. When you see in your local newspaper an ad for a band that is coming to your town, the band or the record company pays for that ad too, not the venue. The venue usually has their own advertisement column or ad for upcoming shows. I used to work at the biggest newspaper in our state here, that's how I know that.

So if a band is not selling a lot of records, oops cds, they need to tour to make money.[/b]

Okay, let's SAY each member makes $5000 each show. How many shows does Styx play on the average per year? Over 100?

Do the math people. That means, by this $5K rumour, each guy would be making HALF A MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR.

Let's see. Half a million every year versus waiting for Dennis to feel like he's ready to tour, or that he's recovered from his made up, hypochondriacle, undiagnosable mystery allergy to lights. I'd choose door number 1, Monty!

And their probably making MORE...

Half million a year gross after taxes 250k
Now you can see why they are playing bowling alleys

With Dennis they made much more cash in allot less time .
Door number 2 is the correct door .

And too they have other people that help them and work for them to pay out of that.

I think Tommy JY and the rest are just fine making what they are making without DDY. I don't think you could pay them enuff to play the kind of show DDY is doing.

and what would that be? A whole lot of rip-off greatest hits repackaging products to rip off the fans? Yeah certainly that's better than having Dennis in the band making some decent music.

The only thing they are making is a mess. I'll admit there are two songs on Cyclorama that I liked.... but two songs doesn't make all of this other stuff worth it IMHO.

Well, the last time I checked, Styx hasn't physically forced me to buy anything. They can put out as many packages and re-releases as they like--I'll only buy them if and when I want to. If I get ripped off, I'd have to say that it's my own fault.

As far as having Dennis in the band making some decent music, that hasn't happened since Paradise Theater (IMO), so it's not even an issue with me. As a matter of fact, Styx tried making some decent music with Dennis a few years back and gave us Brave New World.

Finally, while Cyclorama doesn't make me forget Grand Illusion or Pieces Of Eight, it's a step back in the direction of music that I like to listen to. Therefore, I'm willing to tolerate all the junk releases if that's what it takes to get the next Styx album of all-new studio material.

I Disagree..

Just Get Through This Night
Double Life
Haven't We Been Here Before
Show Me The Way
Edge Of The Century
Love Is The Ritual
All In A Days Work
Love at First Sight
Little Suzie
It Takes Love
On My Way
Paradise
Dear John
Brave New World
What Have They Done To You
Everything Is Cool
Goodbye Roseland

Now there are other songs that are Questionable that I did not include on this list..Such as Roboto,Don't Let It End,and others that could go either way with the fan base...

Also if Dennis was still with Styx, I seriously doubt that they would be backed by an orchestra...

Here are the songs from your list that I like:

Double Life
Haven't We Been Here Before
Love Is The Ritual
Love at First Sight
Little Suzie
It Takes Love
On My Way
Dear John
Brave New World
Everything Is Cool

Now if I were to make a list in the other direction (pre-Kilroy), it would be MUCH longer, hence my decent music remark. But we are entitled to disagree. Even though I may not particularly care for certain Styx tunes, it's always nice to hear that there are people out there that do. Yet another testament to the diverse appeal of this great band
:D

While you guys are right that it's unlikely that Styx would ever play with an orchestra, I'd kind of like to see that....an orchestra about double the size of the 40 piece DDY is working with, along with the dueling guitars of TS and
RL ( Reluctant Legend ) would be an awe inspiring, hair raising experience.

there are severeal places in DDY's show where a Rythem guitar behind the lead would have been welcome IMO.

ek,

I'm glad you like some of my song list, but what you stated was that there was no decent music with DDY in the band since Paradise Theatre...
Clearly this is not the case...I stand by my list because I feel that these songs are worthy to the Styx name...

I agree the list in the other direction would be longer, because the albums from Equinox thru Paradise Theatre were top notch..It's hard to top these six albums... :)

Here's a little Styx history lesson. The band Styx did play with a Symphony back in 1996.

Here's part of a review:

The Paradise Theatre had its Grand Re-opening and I was there!!! June 29, 1996 marked the return of 70s supergroup STYX to Atlanta. Of course, they sang, "Tonight's The Night We'll Make History..." but you know, they did! The fine evening, at the Chastain Park Ampitheatre, was their first time ever playing with a symphony orchestra!! The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) absolutely rocked through the second set with Tommy, Dennis, Chuck, James, and some drummer that reminded me of Animal from the The Muppet Show the way he wailed furiously.

Madame, I am guessing that was one awesome show.....

I wonder if it was taped ? That, I'd buy in a heartbeat if the production quality was halfway decent.

I wonder if Todd wore the nickname "Animal" for a few weeks after that review ?

I have a bootleg copy of that performance. LONG before Metallica did S&M, Styx did S&S. It was a GREAT show and a Decent quality bootleg.

Styx even did 'Come Sail Away' with its orginal words Tommy wrote. 'Aint Getting Down, Aint Getting Down Aint Getting Down', JY sang Babe, and Dennis belted out Blue Collar Man.

Seriously though I do have a copy of this performance on CD. Its a pretty good quality bootleg. It is hard to hear the symphoney on most of the songs. Its been a while since I listened to this recording, but it is good. It's out there I got it off of E-bay years ago.

Yogi - LOL

Yes, there's a bootleg cd, but I haven't found any video footage on this one. I'm looking for film footage that was taken in Hawaii at the Sunshine Festival, Diamond Head Crater, July 3 & 4th 1977. There was a film crew there and Styx totally rocked the place (as I was told). I suppose no one on this site has any information on this one?

I have not heard or seen any film footage of what you are looking for. I would bet Dennis, Tommy, JY, A&M or some other REAL HIGHER UP has this footage. Maybe one day it will get released. You may want to contact the guys at Styxcollector.com and see if they know of anyone who has this video footage.

You know whats damn funny. so many of you bitch about the live CD's etc. that Styx has released. In this day in age when you know just about everything is recorded by the group with decent quality, I wish there was a way (ala Pearl Jam) that I could purchase EVERY live show Styx, Dennis or any other group I like performs. I would pay HUGE cash if I could get Styx's performance back in 1999 from the Far West Rodeo in San Antonio. I would love to have a copy of the concert I saw Dennis perform with symphony in Houston. There are sooo many other live shows I wish I could purchase. How i wish I could have the Return To the Grand Illusion show from 1997 etc.....

Yogi, no I'm pretty sure none of them have this footage. I already checked with the guys from Styxcollector a while back. By the way, if anyone is looking for Styx items to purchase, look at Troy's list on there. I'm now a proud owner of a Mr. Roboto Pez :)

I'm finding out, that at the older Styx concerts 1996 and earlier, there were film crews at some of the concerts. The film company owns the rights to most of the footage. I'm REALLY trying hard to find out who has what. Can you believe that some of the older footage is just tucked away? I'm also trying REALLY hard to piece all the years together and add the footage & photos. I would love to see the older concerts!!!!

I'm also trying to piece together tour dates. I still need a few from 1974, 1975 & 1976. I wish I could find that "super duper die-hard" Styx fan that would have all this information. A few members of the band do not have this information and neither does Styxcollector.

So Pieces, you tease us with this, and don't offer any sort of review of the show ? I for one, have a few questions....

1. Have you heard the new DDY CD ? and if so, can you compare
the 2 for us ? I'm wondering about the arrangements, and how prominent the Symphony is in comparison to the band ?

2. Regarding your CD-R, how did you get it ? How is the quality ?
is it readily available or to your knowledge really rare ?

3. What do you want in exchange for a copy ?

Classic,
I also own a copy of this. I probably purchased it off of E-bay 4-5 years ago. At that time it was showing up for sale fairly often. I think it cost me around 30 dollars. I havent seen it on E-bay for years now. Then again, I dont log on to E-bay that often anymore. As far as bootleg CDR's are concerned my copy is prettyy good. If you own Styx Perspectives I would say its not quite as good, but still the sound quality is decent.

I own 2 copies of Dennis's recent CD with symphony. His CD is much better. The sound quality makes it much better. You hear the symphony alot better in Dennis's CD. It's been quite a long time since I listened to my S&S CD, but I do remember you definately knew the Symphony was there and the arrangement of some of the songs were different.

Yogi, do you remember the songs on the cd (Styx & Symphony)?

I wonder at that time if the other members of Styx enjoyed playing their music with a symphony?

It seems a lot more "rock" bands are playing with an orchestra/symphony more and more lately.
