COME SAIL AWAY: THE STYX ANTHOLOGY

Postby SuiteMadameBlue » Thu Mar 18, 2004 1:11 am

Well my waiting is over. The excitement is here. Yes, all you die-hard Styx fans of old and new. Here is the press release for the new "Greatest Styx Hits". I'm SO happy to see that "Blue Collar Man" made it on this Greatest Hits, I was just terrified that it wouldn't have made it to another cd, whew.

Seriously, I AM looking forward to Caught In The Act on DVD

COME SAIL AWAY: THE STYX ANTHOLOGY Spans 30+ Years for Popular Rockers; From "Lady" and "Come Sail Away" to "Blue Collar Man," "Renegade," "Babe," "Mr. Roboto," "Too Much Time On My Hands" " and "Show Me The Way"
LOS ANGELES, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- From Isaac Hayes singing "Come Sail
Away" on TV's "South Park" to a car commercial featuring "Mr. Roboto," the
songs of Styx have become part of rock culture. Now one of the most popular
bands of its time is celebrated with COME SAIL AWAY: THE STYX ANTHOLOGY
(A&M/UTV/UMe), released May 4, 2004, the group's first U.S.-released two-CD
retrospective and first compilation anywhere to span its 30-plus years to
date.
COME SAIL AWAY: THE STYX ANTHOLOGY, produced in association with Styx,
includes 35 recordings, each newly digitally remastered. Spanning 1972-2003,
the set boasts tracks from 13 of its 14 studio albums -- four Wooden Nickel,
eight A&M and two Sanctuary (also heard is a studio track from a largely live
album). Heard are 12 of the band's 16 pop Top 40s.
Chicagoans Dennis DeYoung (keyboards), brothers John and Chuck Panozzo
(drums and bass, respectively) and guitarists John Curulewski and James "JY"
Young debuted with a self-titled 1972 album which included "Best Thing" and
mixed a rock sensibility with synthesizer-driven prog-rock -- a balance that
was a Styx hallmark. 1973's STYX II showcased the band's first Top 10, the
epic ballad "Lady," which would belatedly earn STYX II gold. THE SERPENT IS
RISING (1973) featured "Winner Take All" and MAN OF MIRACLES (1974) "Rock &
Roll Feeling."
On A&M, the gold EQUINOX (1975) yielded the Top 40 "Lorelei" plus "Light
Up," "Prelude 12" and "Suite Madame Blue." Tommy Shaw replaced Curulewski and
the gold CRYSTAL BALL (1976) had a Top 40 with "Mademoiselle" as well as
"Shooz" and the title track. 1977's THE GRAND ILLUSION turned Styx into an
arena rock superstar. The triple platinum disc spun off the Top 10 "Come Sail
Away," Top 40 "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)," "Miss America" and
"Man In The Wilderness" (here in its previously unreleased full-length
version).
The triple platinum PIECES OF EIGHT (1978) followed with its Top 40s "Blue
Collar Man (Long Nights)" and "Renegade" plus "Sing For The Day" and the title
track. 1979's CORNERSTONE went triple platinum featuring the gold #1 "Babe,"
"Boat On The River," "Lights" and "Borrowed Time." When the concept album
masterpiece PARADISE THEATRE (1981) arrived with the Top 10s "Too Much Time On
My Hands" and "The Best Of Times" (also "A.D. 1928," "Rockin' The Paradise"
and "Snowblind"), Styx became the first rock act with four consecutive triple
platinums. But 1983's futuristic opera KILROY WAS HERE was critically
skewered, despite going platinum and boasting the #3 gold "Mr. Roboto," and
Styx went on hiatus.
In 1990, a reunion (without Shaw) was led by the gold EDGE OF THE CENTURY,
and "Show Me The Way," a Gulf War anthem, rose to #3. Another Styx reunion,
with Shaw, led to a 1996 tour (though John Panozzo would pass away in July).
The tour produced the double live gold RETURN TO PARADISE (1997) and the
studio track "Dear John." After 1999's BRAVE NEW WORLD (the only studio album
not represented on COME SAIL AWAY: THE STYX ANTHOLOGY), more personnel changes
ensued. A new-look Styx made its studio debut with 2003's CYCLORAMA and "One
With Everything."
Three Styx "best of" albums are at least gold. More than a decade after
its previous platinum, 1995's GREATEST HITS reached that mark -- testimony to
the band's enduring appeal. Nearly 10 years further on, COME SAIL AWAY: THE
STYX ANTHOLOGY continues the story of Styx.

Ok, Styx are totally done for me. These endless compilations really cheapen the band. It makes me so angry what their doing to this once great band. If I see another, Greatest Hits, Best of, Anthology, live album, whatever I am going to freak, I swear!

What the fuck! NELSON! JY can't make enough money with Night Ranger and Nugent with them so they get Frampton and Nelson!?!?!? Sorry folks but this has gotten really bad. I wonder how the tour will do this year, I aint goin. Dont they think they should give it a rest for at least one summer.

GIVE IT UP TOMMY...one day he is gonna realize what he did and he is gonna regret it.

I finally see now what Styx is all about now, $$$$$$$ and there gonna milk the name for every cent, drag the once proud name STYX through every casino, club, rodeo and soon bars and bowling alleys until literally no one shows up.

It's time for this shit to stop!

p.s. NELSON, NELSON you have got to be fuckin kidding me!

I won't buy this. I don't need to. I own everything and can make that comp cd if I want to. The only way I would buy this is if I felt a need to still support Styx. Those who still want to support Styx in every way will pick this up.
They blew it by not putting at least one new song, unfinished song-no pun intended, but this could have help, or some old hidden song. I think a couple new songs on here would have helped. I know some were saying that they might buy it if this were the case, I really was not expecting it to happen. To bad, plus it's almost becoming the standard when you put out a greatest hits/comp to give the fans something new. Since Styx has done this so many times already, they really should have for this. If Styx hadn't been putting out so many comp cd's, this would have done well.
I believe a newer Styx fan who just found Styx and doesn't have much Styx will pick this up and think it rules. If I didn't own Styx cd's or everything Styx ever put out, this would be cool.
I believe to with Dennis' Styx music continueing to show up everywhere, that a past fan who is hearing Styx music again now and hasn't kept up with picking up every Styx cd, would pick this up.
I believe I just saw Jackson Brown's Greatesr Hits was doing very well, and I believe this is just a re-master of this that already was. I don't think this will be climbing the charts because of all the Styx comp cd's that have been put out.
Damn, even though I wasn't expecting it would happen, I was really hoping for an OLDER unreleased song, or two, to be put on this. This would have done well if it included like two unreleased songs of classic Styx.

My wife is relieved....for the money in my wallet at risk to yet another Styx CD is safe and sound, and will remain firmly in my wallet.

Boys Boys Boys.......2 cuts that I don't already own, and that $25.00 would have been out of my pocket and in yours in seconds flat.

Take my unsolicited advice.....whomever is doing your marketing....fire em ! I, or anyone else on this board could have told you how to put out a release that appeals to both the die hards and the typical Greatest Hits buyer....you swung and missed at 1/2 of your potential buyers !

Suggest you call the record company and see if it's too late to make this attractive to the other 1/2. Maybe you could offer it as a Styxworld store exclusive ? ( see, Marketing isnt that hard, really it isnt ! ) Hell, you might
even squeeze the $30.00 Stxlounge membership fee out of a few more if
you make it a prerequisite to getting some otherwise unreleased cuts.

The other bands I will use my money on thank you for your incompetence!

To say I am disappointed is a severe understatement. To pull off getting all three labels songs on one release and to not include anything different is just plain sad. I don't think the extended guitar work on one song justifies as different. All the potential wasted. They could not even include ONE song live from a concert in '75 or whenever or Unfinished Song off of Miracles? Looks like I get to keep my original Miracles tape unfortunately. Dennis has said many times 'Dreams do come true' but not this time for true Styx Fans. Universal/A&M thanks for nothing.

Look, the truth of the matter is that bands know that there is a built in fan base that buy entire catalogs of their favorite artists. I've mentioned before my friend who is a Kiss fanatic. Everytime they put out another compilation (and they've put out a ton) he feels a little more betrayed.

Often times the bands aren't the ones doing it, it is the record labels. This doesn't appear to be the case with the STYX release.

If you buy this one, more power to ya, but I don't need yet another hits package.

While I'm relieved that some of Dennis' material was included, this does nothing for me to make me want to buy it. I am not impressed by the "rare photos" and "detailed credit listings". Woopee. Perhaps if there hadn't been quite so many repackages in so short a period of time, this might have done well. As it is, it will just get lumped in with all the other repackages, most of which the bands fans already have. One song with an unreleased version (which was supposed to have been released on another cd) is just not enough for this fan. Sorry.

Thanks for the welcome on the other subject line, Sadie65.

I am with you on this one. More re-hash. Nothing new. I own all their recordings on CD plus all of Dennis' recordings on CD, so this does not need to be in my collection.

I suppose some will buy it simply as a collector's item and there is certainly nothing wrong with that.

Bugsy

no need to buy this one. of course all they had to do was put one unreleased or rare track (Unfinished Song anyone?) and I would have bought it. Journey did the same thing for Essential with no rare stuff (I can see it in your eyes would have fit in nicely) At least Journey already didn't have a greatest hits part 2 compilation (time3 does exist) out already or a Master collection or a...

for somebody not having any Styx yet. I would recommend buying hits 1&2 instead.
