It is defnitely Dennis singing Whole Lotta Love. The opening lines have his intonation all the way. Sorry Bugsy, but there is no way that is Tommy. Compare that to Pretty Woman. Definitely not the same guy singing both songs.

It's Dennis.
Dennis often sings with a little catch in his voice when the song requires it.
He did it in To Miss Somebody the duet with Jimmy Peterik and he sure did it for Whole Lotta, almost better than Robert Plant if you want to know the truth. <G>

OK, OK!!! I GIVE!!! I listened TEN MORE times, LOL! And I guess it could be Dennis and I guess he COULD be saying "I'll never be able to sing..."

He is certainly the one who says "What the hell was that?" But he could have been saying it about himself.

I will have to say this. The quality of the voice is certainly leaning more towards Dennis. The guy, all the critics to the contrary, could and can sing a ROCK song.

Yep, maybe a poll is in order, but what you all say makes sense. Tommy had just sung Pretty Woman. DDY's turn in the rotation.

As I said earlier, this is a really fun collection to listen to. If anyone would like me to sing a few strains of Whole Lotta Love, I sure can do it for ya now!!

Ash wrote:Now that I've found these two CD's.... I'll see what else is on there. Styx is on that same show doing a bunch of their own songs also. I know they did "Not Dead Yet", "Show Me The Way" and a bunch of others.

It sounded like they were truly having a great time and enjoying eachother's company. ::sad::

I also found a live version of "Born For Adventure" and too many live versions of "Crystal Ball".... a lot of it needs to have levels corrected, but otherwise sounds pretty good.

from 91 edge of the century - detroit fox theatre
not in order (but somewhat close i think):

rockin the paradise
love is the ritual
lady
love at first sight
edge of the century
miss america
i'm not dead yet
babe
all in a days work
homewrecker (might have been world tonight, in either case i took a leak here)
suite madame blue
show me the way
too much time on my hands
the best of times
renegade
come sail away

they might have played lorelei in there as well.

and... they had a roboto statue shown in the back at the end.

From Styxcollector.com:

Brave New World/Arch Allies and Beyond Tours (Summer, 1999 - Spring, 2001)
For the first time in years, Styx toured extensively between the summer of 1999 and the spring of 2001, encompassing both the Brave New World and Arch Allies CD releases. It also marked the first time that the band toured without Dennis DeYoung since he and the rest of the members of Styx had a very public falling out that has been well documented. The lineup for this tour is:

Glen Burtnik - vocals, bass, guitar
Lawrence Gowan - vocals, keyboard, guitar
Tommy Shaw - vocals, guitar
Todd Sucherman - drums, percussion
James Young - vocals, keyboard, guitar

and on certain occasions:
Chuck Panozzo - bass

This tour first started out with Styx doing solo shows of approximately 2 - 2.5 hours, appropriately entitled "An Evening With Styx". Then in the summer of 1999, they did a few shed shows with REO Speedwagon. That led to a full blown tour with REO in the summer of 2000, which resulted in the live Arch Allies CD. And the tour also brought them to Japan in February, 2000, for the first time since 1982, and to Germany and Switzerland in October, 2000, for the first time in nearly 20 years. The Arch tour finished in February 2001, and Styx had a lighter schedule through the spring of 2001.

The shorter shows (i.e. the double bill with REO) generally followed the core set plus or minus one ot two songs, with maybe a substitution here and there. Same goes for the "Evening" shows; the core was there, with maybe 1 - 3 substitutions or additions.

The core set of songs for both the shorter shows and "An Evening With Styx" was the following:
1. Everything Is Cool
2. Grand Illusion
3. Blue Collar Man
4. Lorelei
5. Lady (done with a slight piano solo)
6. Fooling Yourself
7. Brave New World
8. Edge Of The Century (with a bit of Mr. Roboto, which got longer as the tour went on)
9. Crystal Ball
10. Miss America (done two ways ... on earlier shows, it was like it was on Grand Illusion with the keyboard intro; later it was the "normal" live way with the drum intro)
11. Too Much Time On My Hands
12. Come Sail Away
13. Tush (the ZZ Top song; as an intro to ...)
14. Renegade
15. Heavy Water
16. King Chanticleer's Rag (Gowan piano solo thing)

The extended core set for "An Evening Of Styx" also included these songs (most were part of the "acoustic" set):
1. High Enough (acoustic, part of song only)
2. Sometimes Love Just Ain't ENough (acoustic, part of song only)
3. Lights (acoustic, part of song only)
4. The Best Of Times (acoustic, part of song only)
5. Boat On The River (acoustic, part of song only)
6. Rockin' The Paradise

Rare
1. Put Me On (intro before "Heavy Water" ... mid-late 2000)
2. Man In The Wilderness (done in some early "Evening" shows)
3. Babe (Japan and Germany - literally done in two shows only)
4. A Criminal Mind (done in a few shows; early tour was Gowan on piano only, in 10/2000 on it was done with full band)
5. Sing For The Day (October 2000 on, occasionally)
6. Love Is The Ritual (October 2000 on, occasionally)
7. Snowblind (done occasionally, moreso in 1999 and not much 2000 on)
8. Queen Of Spades (done in some early EOS shows in 1999)
9. I Will Be Your Witness (done through 1999 and 2000 then dropped)
10. Number One (done through 1999 and early 2000 then dropped)
11. Livin' La Vida Loca (Tommy did a small bit before the acoustic set on "Evening" shows in 1999/2000)
12. Kalifonication (one of the songs that replaced "Livin'")
13. Smooth (cover of the Santana/Rob Thomas song - one of the songs that replaced "Livin'")
14. Kryptonite (Three Doors Down cover - one of the songs that replaced "Livin'")
15. Radar Love (done in the encore on a few occasions instead of "Tush" I would assume)
16. Half-Penny, Two Penny (done occasionally from 1999 - 2001)
17. Sweet Home Alabama (done as part of the acoustic set in 1999 "Evening" shows)
18. Suite Madame Blue (done very sporadically)
19. Red Suited Man (Glen Burtnik Christmas Extravaganza show only, 12/2000)
20. All I Want For Christmas (Glen Burtnik Christmas Extravaganza show only, 12/2000)
21. Ring The Bells (Glen Burtnik Christmas Extravaganza show only, 12/2000)
22. A Christmas Carol (Glen Burtnik Christmas Extravaganza show only, 12/2000)

Additional notes on the 1981 Paradise Theater Tour:

Supposedly, Nothing Ever Goes As Planned was played on some dates. I remember Lights and Borrowed Time at our Philly date in April 1981 but NEGAP was definitely not played.

jimmy, love your postings with the set lists. I really appreciate you taking the time to list all of these :D

Thank you to everyone else too, this is helping me piece together the years of Styx and the songs they played.

When I see the older set lists I long to hear Queen of Spades, Borrowed Time and a few others played again as Styx did loooooong time ago live.

It looks like the Main Event and the Grand Decathalon tours ran back to back.

Did anyone hear of the Superstars Tour? I think it was a short tour or maybe regional. I might've asked this before.

You're welcome Suite:Madame Blue. It's my pleasure!
Not quite back to back.
The Main Event Tour was for Pieces Of Eight and ran through the Fall of 1978. They played here in Philly in December but sold out too quickly for me to get tickets. I was bummed!
The Grand Decathalon Tour was for Conerstone and ran in the Fall of 1979 to early 1980 with a European jaunt that June. They bopped into our area in February of 1980.
I first got the chance to see them on April 3rd, 1981 at the Spectrum in Philly on The Paradise Theater Tour.
They were due to play here on July 7th, 1983 for Kilroy Was Here but the show got moved to September 25th since Tommy injured his hand. I attended that show with three friends.
They didn't make it back again till 1991. I've seen more or less every tour since '81.
Wish to hell I'd caught their shows earlier this year. They had a SEVENTEEN SONG MEDLEY with lots of stuff that hasn't been played in years. I'll post a setlist of that one too. I'm sure this summer's program will be back to a slightly shorter playlist since they're touring in tandem with Peter Frampton and Nelson.
Not sure what the Superstars Tour was. Possibly another name for Grand Illusion or Main Event? I think I've heard that term used before. Where did you hear of it?

Even though I enjoy the music on Cyclorama and have seen the new lineup a few times, looking at all these old setlists makes me yearn to have Dennis back, provided we could hear the "off the beaten path" classics again! I'm not very optimistic that the new lineup will deviate too far from the "tried and true" tunes.

jimmy, I'm still trying to find the article on the "Superstars" tour. I know there was a mention of a tour jacket and a few other pieces from that tour. I keep checking Ebay to see if any of those items pop up.

I found that the Grand Decathlon tour was a 5 month tour, 62 American cities and 9 other cities.

When I do research on other bands, there are fans out there that can detail every concert, where & when they played, the set list from every city, but with Styx I can't find that one person that has that information. The band members and older managers didn't even keep all that info - LOL

:)

Ditto, ek! I would pay real. BIG money to see Classic Styx, the real Styx, in concert singing some of those terrific album cuts.
It is a treat to hear Dennis sing "Castle Walls" in concert now.

Even if I heard the current lineup of Styx decided to do a tour with only those rarely heard classics, I would not go. To me, those could only be performed with Dennis.

My view of this only.

Yes, Yes! I feel exactly the same way! I'm a stickler for that info on my bands as well. I want to know every tour date and setlist from the beginning to today. Some bands like The Grateful Dead, Yes or CSN have practically ALL that information available. But with other bands like Styx it's harder to come by. Even JY admits this on the recent live album when he asks Japan, "Did we last play here in 1981 or 1983"? I know they played there in January 1982 for Paradise but always wondered myself if the Kilroy Tour played Japan. That would've been an obvious "no-brainer" but I tend to think they may not have.

Styx Setlists

Postby jimmy19029 » Mon May 03, 2004 4:57 am

I feel exactly the same about all my favorite bands Suite: Madame Blue. I want to know every tour date, setlist, etc. For some bands like Grateful Dead, Yes, CSN, etc. that info is mostly available. But for others, like Styx, it's harder to come by.

Anyway, here's a more recent setlist from this year. I doubt that this summers will be as long, unfortunately. Maybe it will be.

That's my plan but it's tough to read so I'll post what song titles are legible and as they were written. Most bands use short cut words when they prepare a set list. This is no exception. :-)

Wow! Is THIS an oldie but goodie! :D I love reading that setlist of covers again. I remember Dennis talking about singing "Wooden Ships" in some interview.

BTW, after listening to the radio station thingie not that long ago, I am convinced without a doubt that it is Dennis doing "Whole Lotta Love." Leaving it at that ... and realizing we have been at this for a long, long time.

Dennis did do "Whole Lotta Love" in the WPLJ radio appearance around the RTP or GI:20 tours. It wasn't the whole song. So it would stand to reason if they did it back in the day, he probably sang that one.
