for the sake of starting a ( hopefully ) interesting discussion, couldn't you argue that Classic Rock in general is dead ?

I read the review of Dennis' show in Grand Rapids, the attendance was well under 2,000 people, and I think thats the typical size of the crowds that come to his show....Styx is in the same boat, and so are most Classic rockers, I think....
unless they do double and triple bills that is.

The typical C.R. performer is now in their 50's or 60's, and the typical fan is at bare minimum pushing 40.....and now saddled with family and financial obligations that make buying new music and attending concerts at minimum more complicated if not plain impractical.

There are a few exceptions, the Eagles drew good crowds recently....It will be intersting to see the figures for the gate at FLeetwood Mac concerts this summer.

Hey Froy,

Welcome Back!! This board is not near as DEAD as the Journey Board is. Speaking of the Steve A. led Journey that you love sooo. It sure looks to me as if the venues they are playing now are the EXACT same venues Styx plays when they are not grouped with another 70's/Early80's supergroup. Journey maybe ought to think about hooking up with maybe Billy Squire and Hanson. That could rival the Styx,Frampton, Hanson bill triple bill, and also get Journey out of playing in trailer parks. Its the wave of the Classic Rocker. Its no longer the 70's.... Get used to it!!!!!

Amen. If Froy believes that Dennis rejoining Styx would change the music world back to 1980 he's having delusional thoughts.

Reality is this: most of the acts anyone reading this is most fond of are probably doing the same or WORSE than Styx right now.

And I'd bet it has very little to do with whatever Froy's explanations as to why that is.

If we're being intellectually honest - most acts have to team up with other big name acts just to fill a bill.

Last year I went to see Aerosmith and KISS.... when did you ever think you'd have to pair those two up just to fill a place? Last year those guys had a GREAT opening act too ... Saliva.... good, good band.

Look at Ozfest.... some of the biggest names in modern rock (and I think they are more rock last year than this years batch of nu-metal).... but last year Ozfest was Marilyn Manson, Korn, Disturbed, and Linkin Park - which are some of the biggest names in modern rock and heavy metal (and all acts I am really into right now

)....

All others are in bars. I don't blame Styx for having to team up with other bands because they likely would have to do it to tour in bigger places anyway... However I could think of other acts I'd like to see them with:

Kansas

Night Ranger (I would go to the show and stay for both acts if they toured with Night Ranger despite not caring for Carot Styx/Stynx).

Matchbox 20

No Doubt

Tesla

U2 (Styx would have to open I'm afraid)

The Who

We have hashed out this topic before it seems, but that's ok. I really have a hard time with some of these "old" rockers and how they perform. To me it is getting harder and harder to look at groups like the Stones or Aerosmith or Kiss or whoever strut around onstage no matter how good they sound. Maybe something could be said for nosebleed seats in those circumstances. Hear it, but not see it too well.
Totally my opinion on this here.

I feel Dennis is hitting the right note with an age-appropriate show that showcases his voice and some of his better known music. The size of his crowds depends entirely on the size of his venue because he is selling quite well playing anything from 1700 to 4000 seat venues.

Froy. sorry you feel the board is dead. I think all the arguments have been made, all the fights, maybe, have been fought. Maybe that does make for a boring board.

this board isnt dead at all but there seems to be a clicque of 6-7 people that communicate with each other and everyone else is invisible.so i'm sure theres a bunch of people that look here but dont post cuz they dont feel welcome.

Hey Ace, I am sorry you feel that way. I read your post ( allegation ? ) and as a frequent poster here, and perhaps one of the 6 or 7 you are implicating, I went back to read your previous posts, to see if I was guilty of ignoring them and perhaps contributing to your feeling of being unwelcome.

What I found is, the majority of your posts were limited to one sentance, usually pertaining to a specific recording, or a one sentance comment about a person or issue.

I am not a collector of Styx or it's members rare recordings, so that left me out of those discussions.......you dont elaborate much or expalin your rationale for whatever opinions you are writing about, so it's hard give much of a reply to the majority of your posts.

Please dont take this as a criticism in any way....as you've likely noticed, I love to chat, and Styx is one of my favorite subjects.....I really dont feel like anyone here intentionally excludes newcomers from discussions. You are 100 percent entitled to your opinion however.......Speaking for myself, I have alot of fun here expressing my opinions and disagreeing with others when we dont see eye to eye, and I'll gladly relate to you on that level. I dont know if youve ever heard Jim Rome's radio show, but his 1st rule for callers is "have a take" and that's my advice to you if you want to engage here.

I hope you don't bail on us, but if you do, good luck & have fun out there !

i wasnt implicating you or anyone really. my posts are generally short cuz maybe i'm not yet comfortable here.
i like to answer peoples questions and interact. take for example the randy jackson question i answered it then someone answered it after i did completely making me feel invisible.

i'm not just a styx maniac either i have a really wide spectrum of music i like.

i hope i didnt piss anyone off at all.
another example was before we were discussing styx dvd video comps.people asked me what was on mine i went home and came back in with it typed everything out to recieve not one comment or reaction at all.

Spaceace, you will notice I JUST joined this board recently myself, but, I jumped into discussions with both feet!
If people ignore what you say, so be it. Just post something else! That's my philosophy.

Classic is correct. You get more response the more you have input into the discussions. I think message boards are successful when you have a variety of people posting their thoughts and opinions related to the subject of the board.

Argument is part of the nature of these boards, but I find this one to be mostly civil.

Keep checking here and, if you see somthing that you think needs your input, bring it on! Being a newbie has not discouraged me in the slightest, LOL!

Spaceace, speaking only for myself, you post didnt offend me at all, there's a diverse group of people here and no 2 are have the same interests or see eye to eye on everything. I'd be interested in your response to the thread about the 20 CD's you'd choose if you could only listen to those 20 for 5 years...that tells alot about a persons taste.

I'll respect you a little more if your list is Prince free :wink:

Sorry SpaceAce about the Randy Jackson post. I didn't see your post right away. I starting typing my post and looking up a link to Randy Jackson. Then I started to read more about him and by the time I actually finished my post it came after yours - sorry about that.

I hope you'll feel comfortable here and you're more than welcome to post how you feel.

I've been going back thru the posts and copying what you, the book and jimmy have posted. I just didn't get back to responding, yet.

Even though this is a Styx board it's still nice to discuss other music that we all enjoy - I'll all for that

The DVD of videos will be release May 4th. I pre-ordered mine through Best Buy (free shipping) for $7.99. There is actually 6 videos on there, but no one is sure what the 6th video is. I have to agree with Bugsy that it's "Rockin' The Paradise".

As for the Caught in The Act DVD, I haven't seen anything yet on a release date. There was a May 4th release date too, but now it disappeared. I'll keep looking

I have not found anything about Caught in the Act on DVD so far. I sure hope they still intend to release it. I would love to see it with improved picture quality and sound, if it is possible to do so.

Still wonderin' what's going to be added to that DVD of videos.

Another possibility is Music Time just for its sheer silliness factor. And it is a true concept video --- not a lip-synched concert one. (And please don't ask what the "concept" is. I am still trying to figure it out myself!)

Someone please post what they are when they get the DVD.

There are many more people at classic rock concerts than there are at modern rock concerts. Van Halen is currently selling-out arenas for two nights in a row all over the USA for their summer tour - and they haven't even announced a backup band yet.

The fact is, too much of anything will burn fans out. I've seen Aerosmith, Styx, Journey, etc. three or four times in the last four years. The first event was sold-out, but each event thereafter has dwindled in attendance. Rush is only on their second tour in as many years, so they are still selling-out.

These classic rockers need to get their own businesses started like Sammy Hagar has instead of relying on state fairs and casinos for their paychecks. That way they could tour once every three or four years and people would come out again.

Although the fact that some of them may be in wheelchairs four years from now does pose a little concern.

I BET Dennis is f***ing up the CITA DVD. I know it. His light sensitivity is back and its making him, uh, file an injunction or uh... not sign something... or uh whatever. Maybe somebody can write his wife at the "crib" (puh-leeeeeeeeeeeez) and find out.

Dennis has no control over CITA or its release. Whatever the delay, it more than likely has something to do with release rights...which he doesn't have. Seriously.

Sadie is right. Dennis has no control of the release of the CITA DVD. He doesn't even have the rights to the videos for his own music.
Apparently videos are a separate entity.

My feeling, not based on anything but assumption, would be that Dennis would love nothing more than having his brainchild, the whole Kilroy concept -- the mini-movie and the concert -- released in DVD format for all the world to see and perhaps judge less harshly.

NEWSFLASH FOR SADIE....
You mean to tell me that Dennis can't delay the release of CITA? If you think that he can't delay (or stop) its release than you are spouting off about something that you know nothing about. It is especially easy to get an injunction if the release in question includes unreleased or previously unreleased material (or a sound recording of previously released material). If you still don't believe it look it up for yourself.
And as for the name calling all I have to say is it takes one to know one.

As for what I know, amazingly I know more than you give me credit for. I understand all about injunctions. Funny how you're the only one making that leap. Who said that the release was delayed? Did it ever enter into your imagination that perhaps they might be holding off on the release because they are releasing other Styx items at the exact same time? And did it ever occur to you that perhaps Mr. DeYoung might actually want CITA released given that it's the one of the things that he seems to take total blame for? Has it even occured to you that given he would most likely see some sort of monetary gain for releasing it, that he probably wouldn't hold it up? I've heard nothing about unreleased material being added where CITA was concerned. Back up your sources please.

You've come in here several times with an axe to grind against Mr. DeYoung. That's fine. Many people don't like him. But watch the language please.

NEWSFLASH FOR GARY: It isn't always about Dennis.
