Dennis DeYoung Hello God single

Postby bugsymalone » Tue May 04, 2004 5:20 am

I watched Dennis on CNNfn The Biz this morning and he mentioned that he is releasing "Hello God" as a CD single to radio stations.

From what I understand, he is going to push this song without the help of a label. So I assume one would have to buy the single from his website, unless they make it available on some online sites.

This song really works, to me, for the times right now. I hope he has some success with it.

He was, as usual, a great interview on this show. He looked and sounded really healthy and happy and extremely upbeat.

Yeah, well, stranger things have happened. I guess it doesn't hurt to try.

What I want to know from all of you Mel Rock Styx Board posters is.......will you buy this single ? I especially want to hear from those of you who own the DDY double CD already.

If you do buy the single in addition to owning the double CD, it's my opinion that you forfeit your right to bitch about all of the re-releasing Styx has done recently ( UNLESS Dennis offers a flip side that an alternate take of some other song, or something that is DIFFERENT from previous releases....)

Sadie, Madame.......you are amongst the biggest DDY supporters here, how do you answer this ? I will not buy unless there's something in it for me thats new / different.

Well, Classic, I've heard nothing that says it will be released to the public, just radio. But it would make sense then to release it to the public, wouldn't it? As for me, I don't buy singels unless it is something I cannot get otherwise. So, while I will request to hear the song on the radio, no, I won't be buying the cd single. Unless, like you said, it is different than that of the one on the orchestra cd.

don't confuse releasing a single from an album as re-issuing things time and time again. I mean... how many of you bought the Edge singles in addition to buying the album? I know I did.

btw - i **might** buy the single... depends. If there is some good artwork on it or something I like. It all depends on the product. I'll evaluate it just like I would any other music buy.

If DDY was REAL smart, he'd get it on the iTunes music store.

So, when they do "Americas's top 40 , or 20, or whatever it is....
it's no longer based on sales of the single ? I know I'm out of touch and all, but I thought you still had to sell alot of CD's to have a "#1 hit " or even say your song made the charts....

Someone please re-educate me on all of this....I dont get it anymore.

I think Casey Kasem does it based on radio airplay... NOBODY buys singles anymore. Up until 1990 or so I may have bought a single a week if not more...especially with all of the non lp bsides that started turning up. I can honestly say that the last single I bought was Sick of Myself by Matthew Sweet when it was new....
They can't rate the charts based on single sales anymore.

I really don't consider a single off of a CD album to be a re-release or a rehash.

Times have changed but back in the day, you released a single from an album to get radio airplay and, hopefully, sell the album as well as the single.

I would think releasing "Hello God" from the live CD would be the same sort of thing. Try to garner airplay for the song and, hopefully, buyers for the CD and tickets to the concerts.

Just looking at the top 40 songs, most are from the top selling albums. They sort of feed off of each other.

I have not bought a single since vinyl went out with the Betamax and 8 track. Will I buy this one from Dennis if it goes up for sale? If it is a different version, yes. I certainly will call the radio stations and request it, assuming they GET it.

Will it be a hit? THAT will take a WHOLE lot of luck.

I had a great collection of 45's growing up......have been trying to
find all of that great music on CD for the past 10 or so years. I guess now that I think about it, I dont see many CD singles for sale out in the stores. One of these days, I'll get a working turntable again and record them onto CD.

I'm not sure which stations in my market would be most willing to play the song.......the demographic skews older ( my guess is the 35-54 age group ) for DDY's music, as those are the people most likely to appreciate his music with Styx, at least in large numbers.

The one station here that would be most likely to play it seems to have a very narrow play list, you can hear the same song 3-4 times a day if it's on their "heavy play" list. This doesn't leave room for Music that's not entrenched in the mainstream.

So I think it's an uphill battle, I'll be rooting for commercial success for it though...it's a really good song, and fits nicely with the times we live in.

I agree with Sadie, I think the single "Hello God" will only be released through the radio stations and not the public.

If it was released to the public, I'm sure I'd buy it. Yes, I do have his new double live cd, in fact I have 2 copies. I have his Soundstage DVD too. I also have a few single cd's too, even though I have the full cd's. There are certain things that I'll buy, it depends what mood I'm in  I'm still working on finding the old Styx press kits and tour books.

I hope his song does chart, that would be great!!! It sure doesn't hurt to try :D
