JY Interview

Rock.com has a JY interview that I actually did not mind listening to.

For once he gave Dennis credit for his talent. He sounded much more philosophical and less antagonistic than in some of his other of his recent interviews.

And he had a number of interesting things to say.

Just finished listening to the J "humble as always" Y interview.

He did indeed give Dennis some credit, but he did it backhandedly. He mentions DDY 3 times either directly or indirectly during the interview (all within the first 5 minutes or so) and every time he gets in another dig at Dennis.

Rock.com-"Larry seems energetic on lead vocals, tell us how he fits into the band."
JY-"well he is obviously more talented than the man he replaced."

Even I acknowledge that Larry is a great musician. Vocalist on the other hand.... Even so I don't find his work on Cyclorama any more impressive than Dennis' work on GI. To say that larry is 'obviously' more talented is ignorant.

Rock.com-"so is there any chance of there being a reunion with Dennis?"
JY-"Did you see the Behind the Music?...I'll just stick to what I said then."

If this is evidence that JY is softening his position, I think it speaks volumes for where he as BEEN the last five years.

Rock.com-"So what's been going on the last few years?"
JY-"Well we had a tour without Tommy that failed and then we had a highly successful reunion tour in 1996. But Dennis put out a broadway album 10 years ago and this is nowhere on the radar of what I want to be doing musically. When tommy came back, he and I decided that THIS WAS UNACCEPTABLE."

So if anyone thought it was all Dennis' illness that caused the split and not the desire of tommy and JY to kick him out, here it is straight from the horses mouth...so to speak.

Still I recommend the interview. Hearing the reluctant legend speak instead of reading a written interview does so much more to bring out the arrogance in his message. Very entertaining to say the least.

Thanks for that analysis, Scott. I only listened once and I guess I came away with a less bitter, antagonistic JY than in some of the other recent interviews. And for him to acknowledge, finally, that Dennis had talent was a major concession on his part.

That said, he most certainly had his usual ego trip moments. Wonder why, when he was name-dropping Sting, that he didn't mention how much Sting liked the Kilroy Was Here project and felt that Dennis was both ahead of his time and a genius???

I really didn't catch the comment about 10 On Broadway, but we all know that from 1997 on the two guitar players were angling for a way to get rid of Dennis. His illness simply gave them the out to cut and run.
What I have always resented about that whole thing was the cowardly way they did it. But I guess that is not a surprise.

Maybe I am glad I didn't listen but once!

Well, I am unable to listen to it, so I really can't comment on the interview itself. As for JY giving Dennis his "props", well, he has done so, however as it was so well put, he does it very backhandedly.

I think that he has a great deal of anger at Dennis that he now feels free to vent. All well and good, but I think it would be healthier for him, and a lot less problematic from a PR standpoint to not display that animosity in all these interviews.

While I've no doubt as to Gowan's keyboard skills, I think it's a matter of personal taste. I doubt JY truly thinks that Gowan is the better of the two, more it's a case of saying so because he can. Seems to be a game of button pushing. And in the end, the only thing it does, is further splinter the fans into factions. And isn't that a waste, since the fan base is already dwindling? Why make those fans that are still around continue to chose??? Let it go already man, let it go!

Sure he is........that's why he was such an obverwhelming success as a solo act. He writes an awesome song too.

JY, whatever drugs you are using are very potent, a statement like that shows you are not living in the real world.....but that's OK. I'm sure in the la-la land you are living in, 21st century Styx is wildly successful, so if you are happy in that place, I am happy for you....just make sure you keep an ample supply of that stash on hand, because coming back to reality is going to make a hangover seem like a picinic !!!

Have fun on the COUNTY FAIR and CASINO circuit this summer, and for the rest of your declining career !

Man, The more that things change( JY's story of the breakup), the more JY stays the same...And this interview is an example of why Carrot Styx, Neo Styx, Dip Styx, or what ever you want to call them is not getting the respect from certain posters and classic fans that they are trying to obtain....

Hey JY.. Dig your hole a little deeper...Why not say that Dennis broke every one of your's and Tommy's Styx 10 Rock n' Roll Commandments...

VII Thou shalt not pursue Broadway Music when he is away from Styx

VIII Thou shalt not become ill to hold up our tour

IX Thou shalt not sue the band when being Kicked to the curb

X Thou shalt not Return to the band unless they are playing hockey on the river Styx
( I guess he didn't break that one...)

Yep, That should cover it....
