First impression of an older Styx album.

Postby Jonny B » Fri Jul 30, 2004 10:26 am

I borrowed a greatest hits compilation of Styx years ago, but the music styles were all-over the place, from 70's AOR tunes, to the awful "Mr. Roboto." As a whole, it didn't really leave me a good impression on the group. The recent "Brave New World" was nothing that caught my attention either. :?

But remembering the older tunes from the greatest hits compilation I listened to, I gave Styx a third chance. Today I found a cd copy of Paradise Theater. It's my older bro's favorite Styx album, which he only has on vinyl. I'm listening to it right now as I type to make sure the cd plays through.

I'm blown away! Certainly more consistent than a greatest hits compilation, that's for sure!

I was originally gonna hide this one away as a Christmas gift to my older bro, but I'm leaning more towards selfishness and keeping this one for myself.

Well I've not really heard GH described as uneven, but if you like Paradise Theater, you might want to find The Grand Illusion or Pieces of Eight and give them a listen.

I really find that the Classic Styx albums, Equinox through Paradise Theater, should be listened to as entire albums. They work SO much better that way, IMO.

To go with Sadie's recommendations, I will add my personal favorite, Equinox. Talk about some great music!

Equinox is a great album. JC was wrong for leaving the band and downing their new style.

Go with Equinox, which in my opinion is the BEST progressive rock and roll album EVER!!!!!!!! If your in the mood for some GREAT new rock and roll order yourself a copy of Glen Burtniks Welcome To Hollywood. Its a TRULY AWESOME CD.!!!!!!! Tommy Shaws Seven Deadly Zens is REALLY GOOD too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree wholeheartedly. Styx had a knack for putting together an entire album that flowed smoothly from start to finish, something that's a lot harder to find these days in the music industry. While I enjoy a lot of today's modern rock, it's hard to find an entire CD that sequentially stacks up to the Styx releases of yesteryear. Even post-PT Styx albums lacked this quality, although I thought Cyclorama flowed pretty well.

I always thought that Crystal Ball and Pieces of Eight were the best of the bunch. Serpent is Rising, Equniox, and Grand Illusion are all very good too.

I'd say Grand Illusion gets my pick for best Styx album, but I do enjoy Equinox, Paradise Theatre, and Pieces Of Eight. Cornerstone is a guilty pleasure for sure. Crystal Ball has some good cuts. Hell, it has Shooz!!! Great song.

Thanks everyone. I'll have to check out the suggested titles next time I'm at a music store.

The entire A&M years, by far were Styx best years. Each album stood on its own and could be considered must have albums by any fan. While Equinox was pre-Tommy it showed as musicians and songwriters they had really begun to figure out what the band could be and Kilroy showed that the band had already started to have enough of each other, those albums sandwiched in the middle stand the test of time and showcase rock at its best during that era.

Like all great music, you fall in ove with it when its new, it falls to the back of the song rotation, then when you discover it again, you realize how good it is. This is especially true of these albums.

The clues point to one thing. I like roast beef and the song Shooz. Ya got me, busted.

For a new fan, I'd suggest avoiding Styx I, Brave New World, and all of the live albums...anything else would be fair game.
