Styx Future Longevity

Postby classicstyxfan » Thu Sep 23, 2004 3:39 am

OK, so we know Styx plans to release another CD in the (relatively) near future, which means it's unlikely then end is near.....

But eventually, for Dennis, and for Styx, there will come a day where they are no longer making music for Public consumption.

Here's your chance to play Swami, and predict the future for both sides. My questions: ( insert Styx or Dennis De Young where underlined )

How much longer do you think ___ will tour (Year 2_ _ _ )

When will ___ release their/his last CD ? ( year 2 _ _ _ )

and here's IMO the most interesting question......

Why will ______ ultimately decide to hang it up ?

A. Health Reasons
B. Band Breaks up
C. Lack of Fan interest
D. Loss of passion for Music
E. Other

Whad'ya think ?

My perdiction is Dennis will tour into early 2006, then get back into broadway Hunchback or other material. Current Styx will tour until the end of 2006.

Dennis's next release will be his last 'rock' release as a solo artist. He may release some other material broadway, singles, opera, hip hop etc. Current Styx will release another CD in 2005, and Maybe an EP in 2006 which will include another 'all new' version of Blue Collar Man( this time it will be mimed for the DVD that comes with the EP). These will be the last releases for the current rendition of Styx.

On 7-7-07 Dennis, Tommy, JY, Chuck(or Glen),and Todd will get back together to start recording 'The Grand Illusion ll'. They will also start a tour that will play major cities throughout 2008. They will release their final CD of all new material sometime in 2008 or early 2009.

Because of Health reasons and other intrests, the band will disband for good in late 2009.

On a side note in 2010 by some rare accidential fluke Styx will have their final top 10 hit (#3) with the very quirky 'Chimpmunk Blues'. Of course this will be a Dennis led number. Many current Styx fans will cry 'foul' over this song because the lyrics appear to be a shot at departing member Lawerence Gowan. Dennis denies this saying ' The song was orginally titled ' Groundhog Day Blues'. Dennis also says it was written for his Hunchback musical, and he can prove it because Roger Colvert helped him with that song back in 1996. It is very hard for him though to defend the following lyrics found in his new and Styx's new hit they read: 'Out of some foreign light you rose, kicking when I'm down Ya your over 50, got the State Fair & Harley Blues, been on a bus forever. You get oh so high when they throw those bras & panties, Spin Keyboard Spin Keep on spinning Spin my criminal mind back to the day. Spin, Spin, Spin, cause Ive got those Chimpmunk Blues'

JY tries and fails to reunite Styx in 2012. Later stating he ALWAYS disliked 'Dennis's' Chimpmunk Blues, JY and Gowan join forces and put out a CD in 2013. The CD titled 'Coattails' spends 34 weeks at #1!!!!!!!!!!

Man, Yogi. How can anyone top THAT???

My guess is Carrot (or insert new CD cover reference here) Styx will tour until there are only 4 people at each concert and they are all related to whomever is onstage.
What year will this be? Only a cyrstal ball can tell.

Dennis, as long as his voice holds out, can do a lot of things. Many see him doing a Broadway role and I think this is entirely possible.

I forsee neither Dennis nor his former group producing a "hit" anything in the future unless it is a baseball in a charity game.

Whatever gets released on CD by either Dennis or his former band will be bought by the faithful fans and no one else.

I see one more studio release each for both DDY and Styx.......

Followed by a groundbreaking release of previously recorded songs by Styx.....

I. Styx - Greatest Hit Vol IV ( see previous post in another thread for VOL III ) Note this one is NOT called Greatest Hits in the plural, because the tracks will be the 12 prevoiusly released versions of....... you guessed it.........BLUE COLLAR MAN !!!!!

But wait, there's more ! a bonus disc......Styx and REO live at Riverport ! Yes, these tracks will be re-mastered and re-released for the 14th time.

Wait, I see more....Dennis will release his new Broadway play, loosely based on his life story, called "A STAR IS FIRED"

Styx will release an EP in January that includes the cover songs they've been doing in the show, the cyclo-medley, and the 2120 recordings.

September will spawn a new material cd including a lost 2120 song.

2008 will produce one last new material cd of the current lineup.

2010 will spawn a greatest hits of this lineup

2012 ddy reunites with styx for the "Eatin' Crow tour", Glen also agrees to rejoin the band. All members agree to play only on the songs they had a part in writing. Glen and Ricky sub in for Chuck.

----------------------

DDY

DDY releases a new album in 2005. Proves to all he can still rock with the best of them.

2007 - DDY brings Hunchback to Broadway

2008 - 10 More On Broadway is released - includes selections of Hunchback

2010 - DDY brings "Don't Let it End" the musical to Broadway

2012 DDY reunites with styx for the "Eatin' Crow tour", Glen also agrees to rejoin the band. All members agree to play only on the songs they had a part in writing. Glen and Ricky sub in for Chuck.

---------------

Reunion Tour spawns 2 new hit singles: "Eating Crow" - about saying things you regret, "What Could Have Been" - A philisophical look at the effects of putting ones ego above the egos of others.

Dennis will play the symphony thing out by 2006.

STYX will continue to tour til 2010.

At this point All differences will be forgotten because neither camp has an audience and we will get the GRAND REUNION TOUR 2011!

Just think, if I'd ever actually started a band, by now I'd have peaked creatively, broken up, put out several self-indulgent solo efforts, reconciled, reunited, and burned out in a spectacular fizzle of redundant glory.

:D :D :D :D :D

I think Styx will continue to tour regularly until one or more of the following occurs:

Tommy and JY get bored with or sick of it.
Tommy and JY cannot find three other quality musicians willing to tour quite so extensively.
Health reasons prevent them from doing so.
They no longer draw acceptable crowds to their shows.

I think Styx will release at least one more album of new material.

I think DDY will continue to tour in his present fashion until he chooses to focus his talents elsewhere. Depending on how long he spends working on other things, we may or may not see him out on the road a couple of more times.

I'd be surprised to see another release from him anytime soon.

Of course, as I make my predictions, I remember that back in 1998 I was expecting that Styx would tour for a year or two with the new lineup and then never be heard from again :D

I think Styx should just call it quits now so Tommy can go work on what really matters, Damn Yankees 3. But barring that I can see them lasting about 5 more years till JY ends up with some age related problem and can no longer play.

Just as a side note speaking of JY.

I was watching the new Star Wars DVD boxed set last night... and I SWEAR that Chewbacca reminded me of JY. Although I think Chewey has a slightly better singing voice.

I'm with you 100% on this. I absolutely love both their CDs and they are terrific live. However, given the recent tour habits of Styx, I'm begining to resign myself to the fact that we may never see the Yanks again! That would be a bummer.

Good post. I'm going to grab a six-pack of Schlitz tonight (if I can find one) and start calling the trailer parks around town for vacancies. I'm excited to try this new, revolutionary method of enhancing the Damn Yankees listening experience. 8)

Here is another part of a JY article about touring and touring and touring and where he wants to tour. He's never going to stop - LOL

LK - Is there something as a musician that you have not done yet that you would like to still pursue?

JY - For me – Styx has never performed in South America – we never performed in Australia – we’ve only performed in Japan, and never on the continent of Asia nor in what would have been considered the eastern block of Russia. We’ve never performed in Mexico.

So, it’s a matter of that I want to take our music around the globe. That is one big goal. I mean we’ve had number one records - we’ve sold millions of albums. Whether or not we get in the rock and roll hall of fame, who knows. (That is a small select group of people who are very NYI slanted in the way they view life.) If we are around long enough we’ll probably get there but it’s like there are a lot of actors that are put in great performances that are never recognized by the academy and that doesn’t mean that there performances are any diminished - it just means that the club wasn’t paying attention at the time to what they did. I don’t know, my goal is to bring Styx music around the globe and to keep doing it until they scrape me off the stage

LK - Most of the band members are in their 50s, how much longer can you play rock and roll? Already three members of the band have succumbed to health issues. Health and aging aside, do you see a time when you won’t want to play rock and roll anymore? Some others, like Grace Slick have said it is silly for people over 60 to play rock and roll, what do you think? ?

JY - I’ll play until they have to scrape me off the stage. The pendulum has swung back in our direction. I do believe somewhere in the next three to seven years a new resurgence of young people taking an interest in Styx and bands like Styx. The right song is going to rear its ugly head and wave and it’s going to catapult us once again to the top of that very high mountain. And really I understand the people – the traditional mechanisms that were in place when we first started making records – those mechanisms are no longer in place. But people are still people and it just takes someone to have a little P.T. Barnum, which there is a little of P.T. Barnum in rock and roll shows - and you can’t tell me any differently. Someone just has to figure out a way to get people’s attention and say check this out. And if it’s the right song at the right time it can happen. If you give up and you hold no hope, you are already finished – And I’m not finished.

Im sorry but JY must be doing drugs
WE have had number 1 songs ah JY that was Babe the song you and Shaw make fun of.
This guy is living in a dream world .
In 3-7 years young people are going to get into Styx no JY they are going to get into The Beatles not your screwed up lineup you call Styx
Larry Gowan has done nothing for this band so its you and Shaw and thats not Styx, Go ahead keep touring I will see Light Up a great cover band better than your current lineup Keep talkin nobody is listening,

I fully understand JY needing to keep a positive attitude about the group he is touring with and the prospects of success, but some of what he says just sounds delusional. Like a crazy man talking.

He's a lot more optimistic than me, that's for sure. I'd love to see Styx "climb the mountain again" but the state of the music industry sure isn't going to do them any favors to that end. I'm not even sure that having Dennis back would be of any consequence in terms of airplay or new album sales, although I think he would add to the average crowd numbers and sales of subsequent live releases.

Is JY Delusional ? maybe. But you know what ? given the absolute CRAP that is 90 percent of the current music scene, if Styx can recapture the Magic, and make some music that favorably compares with their best work to date, maybe, just maybe they could make an impact.......

Would I bet my paycheck on it.......uh, no....I wouldn't. but Tommy is a phenominal talent, so I'm not closing the door to the possibility entirely. If Roy Orbison could enjoy a comeback late in life, why not Styx ?
