We haven't done a hypothetical question here in a while.........

You have been granted the opportunity to ask one question, any question you wish, to any Past or Present member of Styx.....that member will be given truth serum prior to answering your question, so you will receive the honest to God's truth, not the company line answer...

Who will you choose, what will your question be, and for fun, what do you think their answer on truth serum will be ?????

Not a Dud?? My question would be to John Curulewski. I would want to know the 100% TRUE reason, or reasons why he left Styx, how he felt about their enormous success once he left,regrets etc, what he did for work, fun, etc, and his feelings about the GREATEST Progressive Rock Album of ALL Time EQUINOX.

I believe his answers would range from Dennis Deyoung, to family, to alcohol and drugs as to why he left. I think he would be VERY bitter about the enormous success of the band because of the millions of dollars his decision cost him and his family. Work and fun I have NO clue, as for the album Equinox I also believe he would be bitter because it is pretty much a Dennis Deyoung Album. Its sooooo brilliant yet its pretty much Dennis's baby and that was probably a HUGE reason why he left Styx.

I don't consider your question a dud, classic, I just haven't got around to answering it yet.

My question would be for Tommy: Why did he go the direction he did musically on his first three albums? By his own account, he was very unhappy with the Styx sound at the time, and I've always been puzzled by the great number of songs on his solo albums that resemble the very style of music he was condemning at the time in Styx. I would've expected something more along the lines of what we eventually heard from Damn Yankees.

I truly don't know what his answer would be (which is why it's my question

) If I had to speculate, perhaps he felt Styx was an established band with a trademark sound to maintain, whereas solo albums were a more appropriate way to explore musical creativity :?:

Gowan better keybaordist? Yes! Better songwriter No, close but no. Better singer? NO WAY Dennis blows him away.

My question would be to the whole of Styx. Any chance of a box set of unreleased songs? Like the one promised years ago, with songs to the follow up of EOTC!?

I think Dennis would go for it, maybe even Tommy, but the others, I do not know.-ERIC

Bonus Question: If you could go back to your teenage years knowing how this path turned out for you, would you go down it again, or choose more traditional vocations ?

I'll be on more tomorrow.

Styx started as a band of friends that got together. Once contracts were made, Styx became a business. Once it became a business the friendships started to sour. I can't remember the correct date, but the contract among the band were changed in 1979 (the first time). The song "Babe" was never meant to be on an album, it was a gift for Dennis' wife Suzanne and then he was talked into adding it on Cornerstone a year later. When it was first recorded at the studio it just featured Dennis, John, Chuck and Gary. When it was added on Cornerstone Tommy's guitar work was added. This was the beginning to the inside "fights" and "arguements".

I asked JY a few questions already, but the one that I wanted to ask if he is still "ticked" off about not being involved with the song Babe. Also why he didn't show up at the People's Choice Awards. I would also tell him that life is too short and get over the bitterness.

I think John and Chuck were okay overall with Dennis through the years. Just my opinion.

There is still talk about a box set, that's up to the record companies on this one.

I have most of my questions answered by Dennis :wink:

I know he has almost 10 songs completed for his next cd. I heard him play one of the new songs on his piano and to me it ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :lol:

I'm seriously disappointed to see insults being thrown at Lawrence Gowan here.

The man is a genius in his own right - he is a flawless keyboard/piano player and a master singer/songwriter.

personally I'd prefer it if he was not in Styx and returned to his awesoem solo recording career. I love his albums.

Let's not pay out on him, or the other guys....Dennis isn't in the band (sadly), but you can't blame those that took his place.

Well, me too, Andrew.

That said, he was offered a job and he took it. He is certainly trying his best to fill in some mightly big shoes, especially vocally. And he is failing miserably in that department, IMO. As we have discussed on the other thread, I would love to hear proof that he is any better a keyboard/piano player than Dennis.

My question to him might be: If you had your choice, would you prefer a successful solo career or this career you now have with the Styx organization?

I'm sorry Andrew, I have to disagree with you. I have to admit to not having listened to any of his solo material, but I have listened to Cyclorama and I find songs like "More Love For the Money" cornier than the dance Chewbacca and the Panozzo brothers do in Heavy Metal Poisoning.

I think fans have a right to be pissed off and disappointed. Here in the states you pay $30 - $50 to see a concert that doesn't feature the most prolific song writer or musician in the band. That's a monumental rip-off. They're doing their absolute damndest to burry the DeYoung history and I predict inside of a couple of years they wont' play Lady, Come Sail Away or any other Dennis penned song. Considering DeYoung had a vast majority of the hits for which Styx is known, I'd say this is yet another mark in the "rip-off" column.

I've said it before, Gowan plays the Keyboards just fine....My opinion is however, that his predecessor was no slouch on Keyboards either.

My comments were intended to be a not so subtle slam on JY, with his "Gowan plays circles around his predecessor" comments, which I think is a load of crap.

I pick on his voice only in comparison to his predecessor in the group, and, lets be honest, DDY's voice is one of the finest in the Classic Rock Genre, at least in my opinion.......

If he or JY truly feel he is so much better on Keyboards then DeYoung, then my tongue in cheek questions become legitimate ones, dont you agree ?

I understand that - I didn't actually touch on Dennis' skills, as they obviously speak for themselves.

Gowan's best? Let me think about that and I'll most definitely get back to you

As far as Cyclorama being controlled - well, I wasn't there and can't claim to be all wise ont he subject, but in interviewing Glen Burtnik, his departure was in some way attributed to not being able to contribute enough musically to the band as he would like to.

And this, to me, is why the current lineup can never, ever measure up. They have lost their greatest talent, but continue to trade on it.

I know many of you who post here love the present lineup --- and it may change again, who knows? --- but those of us who grew up loving the sound Styx had when Dennis was at its center cannot but feel the loss of its greatest talent.

After the 5 years the guys have spent on the road and the enormous airplay that they got on "Behind the Music", I would be surprised to find out that true fans would not know that DDY is no longer a member of the band.

It is a pity that they have dropped out most of Dennis' songs from the set. I would think that any fan of Styx is disappointed that those songs are now like a lost episode. But I also wonder what was agreed to when the court case was settled and the ability for Tommy and JY to play those songs.

It is a bit ironic that in various posts Styx is criticized for playing Dennis' songs and is now being criticized for possibly dropping them from the set at some point in the future. My take is that it really shows how deep the wounds are from the events of the making of Kilroy days to the making and promoting of BNW. Clearly Tommy and JY want to tour extensively and Dennis would rather tour on a much more limited basis.

I have no interest in seeing LG sing any of DDY's Styx work.....I am eager for Styx to put out another new Studio CD, with the hopes it is of similar quality to the best of Cyclorama, so Larry can sing more of his own songs, and they can be who they want to be in the 21st century.

Actually Andrew, I think the comments at Gowan refer to his on stage antics...I find it funny how some can bill him as entertaining and bill Dennis as a Dork which I think is totally laughable...I maintain that all the band members(past and present) tend to act like dorks from time to time(spinning keyboard included)....Nothing personel intended.....

Some of you say 'it's a pity that Styx has dropped most of the Dennis led songs from their set'. Some of you rip Styx for playing Dennis led songs in their set.
The FACT is whether you like it or not Dennis is no longer in the group calling themselves Styx. That is FACT, and NONE of us can change that. So now which is it, play Dennis led songs and bitch about it, or dont play Dennis led songs and bitch about Styx erasing the past. Its a NO win situation for the current band!! Whats most amazing to me is that in my opinion the two biggest assets to Styx since 1999 are Glen and Todd. Now Glen is no more........ WELCOME TO HOLLYWOOD!!!!!!!!
