As most of you know, I don't care for any Beatles music - LOL I also don't care for remakes of Beatles music - LOL I really don't care for this Walrus song, surprise, surprise - LOL.

Here's a link from one of the Styx lists for those that didn't hear it yet:

http://www4.ncsu.edu/~kscollos/iamthewalrus.mp3

The only positive thing I can say about this version is, it sounds like a few of them are having fun with it.

I just checked out the lyrics for the Walrus song since I never really listened to it before. All I can say is HUH? goo goo joob? LOL  Just having fun

Oh well to each his/her own :D

I Am The Walrus
(John Lennon, Paul McCartney)
Lead Vocal: John Lennon

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together
See how they run like pigs from a gun see how they fly
I'm crying

Sitting on a cornflake waiting for the van to come
Corporation teeshirt, stupid bloody Tuesday
Man you been a naughty boy
You let your face grow long
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen
I am the walrus, goo goo goo joob

Mister City Policeman sitting
Pretty little policemen in a row
See how they fly like Lucy in the sky, see how they run
I'm crying, I'm crying
I'm crying, I'm crying

Yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dog's eye
Crabalocker fishwife pornographic priestess
Boy you been a naughty girl
You let your knickers down
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen
I am the walrus, goo goo goo joob

Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun
If the sun don't come, you get a tan from
Standing in the English rain
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen
I am the walrus, goo goo goo joob goo goo goo goo joob

Expert textpert choking smokers don't you thing
The joker laughs at you? Ha ha ha!
See how they smile, like pigs in a sty
See how they snied
I'm crying

Semolina pilchard climbing up the Eiffel Tower
Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna man
You should have seen them kicking Edgar Alan Poe
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen
I am the walrus, goo goo goo joob goo goo goo joob
Goo goo gooooooooooo jooooob

Here is my problem with this cover. It is simply an adequate cover. Nothing new is brought to the mix. It is a faithful note for note copy of the original Beatle tune. ANY competent band in the world could have done this. I consider this version neither good nor bad, therefore, nothing special.

I do have one tiny other complaint and that is Gowan's voice. I know many of you don't mind it but it just grates on my nerves.

I don't see this one shooting to the top of the charts.

Walrus was just one of many examples of John Lennon's writing style. The lyrics came from his childhood reading of Alice in Wonderland, but simply put, songs don't always have to have deep hidden meanings to them, he was the absolute master of this. Who else could write lyrics like Living is easy with eyes closed..misunderstanding all you see, words are flowing off like in this rain inside a letter box...they tumble blindly as they make their way across the universe, etc, etc. I agree with Bugsy on this one, and being a life long Beatles fan, many have entered this territory and many have failed. The one remake of a fab four tune that comes close to surpassing the original is Aerosmith's dynamite version of come together. Remakes, in general tend to disturb me from the point that this band has an incredible catalog to choose from. So when you go see them today, you get as encores...a Bealtes tune, a Jimmy Hendrix tune and a Ray Charles tune..along with Renegade. And of course a medley of several of their songs. Why not drop the three covers and add say: Eddie, Born for Adventure and Sing for the Day and instead of the medley do queen of spades.

Thank you for explaining Lord, as you know I have no clue about John Lennon's writing.

I enjoy listening to Dennis' cover of "Whole Lotta Love". Wow!!

Does this remake elevate Styx to the level of Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees ? ( if you dont get the reference right away, consider yourself significantly blessed ! )

That Sgt. Pepper movie pretty much put a stake through the heart of Peter Frampton's career for sure and it did not much help the Bee Gees either.

What always amazed me is that that movie was made anyway. Two of the very best movies featuring Beatle music were made with the Beatles themselves. "Hard Day's Night" is a terrific movie in and of itself, not to mention the great music from it. And "Help" was a wonderful, zany romp that also featured some terrific songs from The Beatles. Both directed by the inimitable Richard Lester.

From a message by Tommy"

We don't know what's going on but over 100 radio programmers all across America have added "I Am The Walrus" to their playlists.

More adds keep coming in every day.

It's possible now that if you call and request this new STYX track they will actually say, "Okay, thanks for calling," and PLAY it!

See for yourself this strange phenomen that's unfolding on the airwaves.

What's next? A video on MTV? Stay tuned...

On one of the other Styx groups, someone said that they were filming for a possible video before the Biloxi show. They had extra video camera crews.

They filmed a video in New Orleans for "I Am the Walrus". Will it get VH1 or MTV2 airplay? Who knows. It has a better chance of getting airplay on a segment of VH1 Classic called Classic/Current where they play an old video and a recent video from the same singer or group.

I am NOT a beatles fan, never have been, never will be. There are only 3 or 4 songs that I liked by them, and this was not one of them. I like it, this one anyway. Larry does a good job, better than the orginal. This song is so good, they need to develop the tour around it. Tommy and Todd could be the egg men, wear egg masks, and egg suits on stage, forget MR. Roboto suits.!!! JY could dress up like a police man, since he is always quick to blame others. He could run around and crack the eggs, and have the new Styx on stage, since the line up is so scrambled with members coming and going. Ricky, could dance in a hoola(?) hoop, to give the songs the 60's feel. And Larry could dress up like a big Walrus, and paint his keys white to look like an iceberg. He could run around that and chase the eggs, who would have the cop chasing him. They all could run around Ricky, who is hooping, plus run around the drifting, turning iceberg. Yes I see a whole new Styx show in the wings.

Actually I really do like the song, Larry voice is in good tune, not scratching like it is sometimes.
I was at the Biloxi show, and the only cameras I saw were the one that The Grand Theatre uses at evey show, for projection.-ERIC

I am shocked at the amount of people in here who say they don't like the beatles. Not that you have to obviously, and attitudes differ as their contribution to the history of music (outside of musicians that is), but If nothing else I consider myself at least pretty versatile when it comes to acceptance of musical styles within popular music. I don't like rap or country and western, but I also don't stop at just classic rock...I like a lot of the 50's and 60's rock music, motown, some of the so called bubble gum, the 70's west coast sound (eagles and Jackson Browne), and have a pretty extensive CD and yes album collection that goes outside of the arena rock and classic rock line ups. Hell I even like several of the newer acts out today. I give STYX credit for attempting to tackle one of the more obscure beatle tunes, if you ever heard the original version, you would know that it was recorded during a time when they had obviously given up live performing. For those of you willing to take a shot at opening up a bit, I would challenge you to listen to Rubber Soul or Revolver in their entirety and see if you come away with the same attitude about the fab four. As with a lot of other bands, we get to caught up on what gets played on the radio and form opinions at that point. Happy listening.

It is not that I do not like the Beatles, I just not a fan of theirs. They have a few good songs. Never cared for John's voice. disliked most of his solo stuff. Paul his the bright one of the group. Have 2 or 3 of his solo.
Never liked Led Zepplin till I bought their box set, about 10 years ago. Problem with Zep, was the production, as with most 60's and 70's acts. Remastered work sound great, and got me to listen again.
Today's acts I like are Creed, and Train. Like some country. Love classic rock, and music from 80's. Most metal, as long as lyrics stay away from killing, satan, etc.....Listen to about anything, but can not stand hip hop or rap.-ERIC

Thank you to SFNH, Suite and Kansas666 for providing the song links...I thought it was a good rendition...I think Gowan's voice is more similar to John Lennon's voice than Dennis Deyoung's....This coming from someone who likes Beatles music..

I live in Chicago and have heard 3 songs from Cyclorama played many time on the radio here. Two songs from Cyclorama made it to the R&R charts. Now I am hearing I Am The Walrus played more and more.

Just wondering. Does anyone know when was the last time a song by Dennis was added to a radio stations play list anywhere in the world?

ChiStyx,

Being as the band was made up of Chicagoans, at least in it's original incarnation, I'd imagine that is where interest is highest in what they are doing today. I'd like to hear Walrus in my market, but so far, it's not getting played.

As for Dennis, havent heard his new songs on the radio lately either, but I dont listen to the stations likely to play it much either.

So far, no "I Am The Walrus".....And no Dennis Material either....

One must remember, the current lineup got the name recognition when they left Dennis. Styx is a known "name" so airplay might come with that. Especially in Chicago.

No way Dennis is going to be on the charts or get radio play in this day and age. It least in my estimation. Although I would love for him to prove me wrong.

That said, when I see something new by Styx, top 50, top 100, on the Billboard charts, then I will believe they have a hit song or CD.

A bit of airplay in Chicago, though nice for those who are fans, does not impress me.

Back whenever (Return To Paradise) came out, I heard the song 'Paradise'( Styx version) numerous times out of San Antonio 105.3. I actually thought it was becoming a hit nation wide because usually all they play are hit songs.Their slogan and format back then was "playing your hit songs from the 70's, 80's and today Magic 105.3". I still havent figured that one out.

Also in my estimation 'Styx' could of gotten some major run out of Cyclorama if they would of come out with a different name other than Styx ( make something up ) show no names or pictures on their CD jacket and play it off like they were some new group. Kiss Your Ass Goodbye, One With Everything, These Are the Times, Waiting for Our Time, and maybe others all could of been hits. I truly believe their name and era killed an EXCELLENT CD that had many radio friendly hit songs on it.
