NEW STYX CD!!!

I just got off the Styxworld website and Tommy is reporting that the band is back in the studio finishing up their final songs for their new release for their upcoming CD. He reports that the CD will be released in EARLY 2005!

Since it is already December of 2004, it sounds like we wont have to wait too much longer for some BRAND NEW Styx Music!!! Sounds GREAT!!!!!

I know how we will all read how its not 'real Styx' without Dennis. Heres a fact since Journey started they have had 7 different singers sing lead,
and 5 different drummers!!!!!!

New music in 2005, from a band that started in the early 1970's NOT BAD!!!!!!!!!!!

Journey may have had 7 different singers I say its 4 but no matter what none were as bad as Gowan the guy is a downgrade
And current Styx has been a downgrade since they dumped Dennis

Thats not Styx no matter how you try to sell it.

On the "new" Styx album they are adding the Walrus song and the blues version of "Blue Collar Man", seriously.

2 songs down, so it should be no problem to write a few more.

I wonder if they're going to add more "guests" on the new album.

I would like to hear a Reggae version of Blue Collar Man, seriously That would be interesting. I could do without the bagpipes - LOL

I hope they redue smokin in the boys room, and I shot the sherriff for this release, ON stage JY could dress up like a cowboy and Shaw could be the sherriff they could have a gun fight on the stage to try an emulate the song . Try to bring back some theater into Styx

I spoke with Todd last month at a drum clinic and spoke with him about this new album. He told us it was going to be a covers album because "I Am The Walrus" did so well. Most likely, this is what they're going to be in the studio for.

It is going to be a 2 CD set, because of all of the different versions of Blue Collar Man. Track 1 is 4:58 seconds of complete silence because that is their now VERY popular mimed version.
Track 2's version of Blue Collar Man, has Gowan featured on the ukulele, and Ricky on the xylophone.
Track 3' Blue Collar man features Todd on the spoons, and a rare guest vocal appearance by the late great Eddie Rabbit.
Track 4 features the fine vocals of Billy Bob Thorton, JY and Muddy Watters. This rare track was recorded in Billy Bobs trailer right before he beat the hell out of one of his ex wifes. You can sense the anger in Billy Bobs voice as he is standing in the unemployment line.
The VERY VERY VERY rare Track 5 is the actual orginal Blue Collar Man complete with the added verse which is hummed by the entire orginal group.( Dennis fans rejoice!!) This added verse was cut out of Pieces Of Eight because Dennis insisted on adding the cathedral sound in I'm OK. The length wouldnt fit within album requirements, so the hummed verse was cut. This was the first real tiff in the power struggle between Dennis and Tommy.
Finally the final Blue Collar Man Track 6 cut is also very rare. There are no vocals as with Track 1 but what you get here is the snapping of fingers. This version is now in HEAVY rotation on VH1 Classic, and was seen last week on Night Flights.

I for one CANT wait for the rest of the CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Todd told us that they are no longer with Sanctuary Records and are on Universal which owns A & M, they were very pleased with the success of "I Am The Walrus" and are encouraging the band to do an album of all covers. Also, if you notice Tommy's message on the Styxworld board, he says they are in the studio, but he doesn't say anything about recording any new Styx material.

This is interesting...Universal would be a good match since they are into the retro bands. Universal Australia signed "the band that can't call themselves Little River Band but really are" to a huge deal a couple years ago. Maybe they'll get some real promotion and support from the label.

If they are planning to release early next year, then I would expect the recording to be finished and they are producing, mastering, and preparing the packaging. If they realy are doing an album of covers (and I hope NOT), then that may be a follow up album. JY said in one of the interviews posted here that they wanted to go in a more bluesy direction...I would rather see/hear that then a bunch of covers...

I thought Tommy was to work on an album of covers with Jack Blades, or somebody...it was a long time ago when I read that.

Why is no one surprised by this? This group has essentially been a cover band as of late anyway.

Yogi, from what I understand, there will be a separate boxed set called "Styx: The Ultimate Blue Collar Man Collection." It will contain all the ones you mention plus the recordings made in French, German, Spanish, Farsi and Vietnamese.

I'm listening to Ricky cutting a bass track as I write and it's hard to contain my enthusiasm at how GOOD he sounds. Lawrence just dusted of his Joe Pesci impression and we're all a bit loopy from all the travel but energized nonetheless by the new recordings. We think you're gonna love it too.

Well, not to nit pick, but it says nothing of new music written by Styx... it just talks about new recordings. Cutting bass tracks as he composes that web site post..... I'd say this doesn't really dispell the rumors.

I guess when your own music doesn't sell well, package up a bunch of someone else's songs and give it a go. I didn't even like it when DDY did this with his 10 on Broadway album

I am a huge fan of the current lineup of STYX. I thought Cyclorama was a masterpiece.

However, I will be greatly disappointed if the new album turns out to be all covers.

I was so looking forward to a new album of original material.

In all seriousness here. I think Current Styx is probably making a wise choice. What is selling for nostalgia groups are nostalgia songs.
Look at Rod Stewart and Michael McDonald as two examples.

I absolutely do not blame them or the record company for catching a wave here.

I honestly do not believe a CD of new material from either Current Styx or DDY will sell well. WE will love it. And WE will buy it, but we are not a huge segment of the buying public.

Cover songs might do the trick, if the choices made are good ones and something can catch on with a TV show or movie soundtrack or if it is marketed well.

It is the nature of the music beast nowadays.

Very well said, and I agree. From a personal standpoint, I generally tend to prefer new music over covers, but Styx has to do what's right for them. By the way, you can also throw Wilson Phillips in there with the others. I'm pretty sure they have a fairly recent album of covers out.

Are any classic artists currently doing the Santana/Rob Thomas thing (old hooking up with new)? That's the only other way I could fathom Styx getting some serious airplay.

Like any band of their age they have to utilize whatever falls their way. Except for a few acts, it has been virtually impossible to get any air play. If we were in their shoes, we would make the most of IATW and what doors it may have opened.
