Is Bohemein Rapsody Next ?

Postby froy » Mon Dec 20, 2004 7:30 am

Everyone stopped guessing as to the next cover Im betting they copy
Freddie Mercury and then Watching Scottie Grow maybe even Wildfire
Jy could ride a horse on stage Tommy could yell out Wild Fire.
On a serious note how happy can Shaw and JY be doing covers
They have to realize that they have just hit rock bottom
Hopefully they smarten up soon.

Will it be Mandy or Could It Be Magic?

Well, realistically, I don't think this is something they HAVE to do. It would seem to me that they want to do this. This new lineup has been playing different covers in concert the last few years so I don't think it's something that makes them unhappy.

They have to realize that they have just hit rock bottom

I guess I just don't understand why covering a song (or songs) would be considered hitting rock bottom. Many artists have covered songs during the course of their careers, some even at the height of their success. Explain why this is hitting rock bottom.

Its no problem doing a cover tune when your at the peak of your career .
It is always a problem IMO doing an entire cd of cover tunes
There is no justifcation for that and when your last cd sold 10 thousand copies and you follow it up with a cd filled with copied music that sends a message that your out of ideas for new material so your going to just throw something together and hop out on the road for tour cash,

There has never been a cd of cover songs thats has been sucsessfull never so why even do it , Do the current Styx fans really want this lineup doing covers? Even Monker say's its a terrible idea.

Could you imagine if the follow up to The Grand Illusion cd was a cd of covers how laughable that would have been ? My point is this lineup is out of ideas so they should have put this to sleep, In a year or 2 relook at the situation and come back with new material a new lineup anything with new attached to it, To keep milking Styx fans with crap like this is just unfair. The vision of Styx is very distorted the driving force of todays STYX is simple MONEY .

IT's funny everyone brings up Barry Manilow and Dennis but the fact is Barry Manilow is huge he has sold more records than I think Styx has

Froy,
Seems you must not have noticed that these guys have been touring since 99 with or without a cd to support, or is it really since '96.

Tommy said in the interview today that they are putting this cd out so quickly because they didn't have to write it. It is the writing that takes a majority of the time. They also said there would be a new material cd sometime between 9 to 12 months after the release of this one.

JY said that this was the planned EP with the 2120 cuts, but the new label said they wanted a full cd after the success of Walrus.

Not true
After they threw Dennis out they toured around BNW '
Then Rama
And in between they sold a STYX - REO package
Now there selling a cover band package ..
Its been one downgrade after the other .
Its getting worse each time/.

Tommy said in the interview today that they are putting this cd out so quickly because they didn't have to write it.

Gee Tommy thats a no brainer

Great another 10 thousand seller .
From multi platinum to multi thousands.
Why are you guys so happy with such an unsucsessful band ?

JY said that this was the planned EP with the 2120 cuts, but the new label
said they wanted a full cd after the success of Walrus.

2120 cuts is anyone really intrested in the 2120 cuts ?
As far as succsess of Walrus first of all it was not a success second of all
It was only mentioned because its a Beatles song not because of Anything the current band STYX has done, This goes to show Shaw will take anything and spin it around to make it sound like STYX has accomplished something. Gee guys we remade a Beatles song see we are still great without Dennis I told ya so.
Shaw nobody buyin your story sorry.
Correction Adam Yogi and Chicago Styx are so you sold 3 people your lame story

Cyclorama is a far superior CD than the awful Brave New World and apart from the songs Witness, Everything Is Cool and Roseland the album bummed.
And the album featured the second worst song in Styx history (first being Music Time) with that awful hiphophiphopcrissy crap.

One With Everything is a killer song but so are These Are The Times and Killing The Thing That You Love. I would not go as far as saying that Cyclorama is the best since 1978 as Paradise Theater is better but it sure is better than Brave New World, Edge Of The Century, Kilroy and Cornerstone.
Just compare the 2 reviews on this site for Cyclorama and Brave New World not only from Andy but from Styx fans too and that will show how the vast majority of Styx fans rate both releases.

Merry Christmas
Darren

Froy has made some valid points they are????????????????????
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Can you imagine if Styx would of followed up the Grand Illusion album with such classics as Hip Hop, Great Masturbation, or Fallen Angel. Talk about fans bolting....................................................................

As for your Manilow argument I believe the Backstreet Boys, Britney, and Nsync have also sold millions of CD's. Hell so has Kenny G. Is he now the lead singer of Journey??????????

Froy,

I admire your 100% total blind loyalty to Dennis. Still you must remember a hero is nothing more than a sandwich. You would rather have current Styx fail, than have Dennis succeed. Thats damn sad!!!

Merry Christmas to you and the rest of the Deyo, Manil, Back, N', Spea, Kenn

Hell,you know what I mean!!!!

Why are you guys so happy with such an unsuccessful band ?

Because I base my musical preferences on . . . MUSIC! I could care less whether a band I like sells 10 million or 10 copies of a CD. I could care less whether they play to hundreds of thousands or just several hundred. I enjoy the majority of the songs the new lineup plays in concert. I enjoy all of the music on Cylorama. I like it much better than the 3 prior studio releases (BNW, EOTC, and KWH).

I would never dispute that Dennis is an extremely talented musician and one of the best vocalists I've ever heard. I enjoy the majority of his songs from the Styx catalog (mostly pre-Kilroy). However, nothing he's written lately has the same appeal to me as back in the glory days. That doesn't mean he writes poor songs; it's just a matter of personal preference. The new lineup's songwriting doesn't match that of "classic" Styx, but it still appeals to my personal taste. Simple as that. If that means I'm the only guy in line to buy that next CD, so be it.

Just my 2 cents :D

Kenny G. as the lead singer of Journey???? No, He and his instrument would replace Neal Schon....Imagine the sound of that (again kidding)....

As Far as Cyclorama, the album has seven songs that I really like and another two that are just o.k., the rest I don't like.... 8)

And as far as the last three studio releases before Cyclorama, I still enjoy some of the music on them....

Ok then master froy.Comparing apples to apples.
I could have sworn you said Dennis is/was Styx, does that not mean everything he is involved is comparable..
No big deal.I think Dennis needs Styx now,as much as they may need him.(though I am content with the way styx is humming along.I do not expect another TGI.I am happy with them giving my city a visit every now and again so I can get my fill.)
Cheerio.

Postby BlackWall » Tue Dec 21, 2004 10:50 pm

Alright, I've been to see two of Dennis' performances over the last couple of years, and anyone would have to be blind to think that Styx is better off with him or vice versa.. If this were 1978, I might agree, but it comes down to the fact that he was attempting to take them in a direction they didn't want to go in, and they were holding him back.. He is a great talent, and he puts on one hell of a solo performance, but when you see his show, you truly understand the direction that he wants to take, and where would Tommy & J.Y. fit into this picture? They don't. That's why he's better off doing his thing, and they are better off doing their's. Now, do I think the guys were wrong in the way the Dennis situation was handled? Maybe, but they did need to tour, and in the end, they really did him a huge favor.

Personally, I keep up with both of them, but I actually think Dennis has actually gained more from the separation than they have. Cyclorama was a fine album, but it was kind of dull, and while their shows are still worthwhile, they do too many medleys, and Larry just does not sound good on Dennis' material. In any case, I still welcome any new material from either camp, and I'm actually looking forward to the album of covers..

BlackWall, nicely put.I tend to agree with 95% of what you said.
Larry may be a bit screechy ,but at least he does not sing all the time.
Dennis has unfortunately not graced me with his precence in my nick of the woods, but would love to see his show.I think the Styx songs would sound great with orchestra, fershure.

Amen! Otherwise William Hung might be considered a much more important musician than, say, Cream.

I saw Styx on 'Kilroy' with 25000 fanatics. It was OK,but I think everybody was screaming because everyone else was.I was a mile away and I guess it was awrite. But lately I have had a dandy time with Styx in an armpit with a 20000 inhabitants and with 700 turnout ,and everybody was having a bloody great time.Frankly ,if I could see Styx in a club with room for a couple of hundred followers it would be even better.
But I am me ,and not you.
