Name the best.........

Postby classicstyxfan » Mon Jan 03, 2005 8:07 am

I think I need a break from the various "soap opera" who did what to whom threads currently in full bloom here.

So............I'm going to ask you for your opinion of the best ever from Styx in the following categories:

Best song - Musically

Best Lyrics - Entire song

Best Lyric - Single line or verse

Best consecutive songs ( 2 ) on a single LP/CD excluding compilations.

And, if you are in a critical mood, answer all of the same questions, substituting the word Worst for Best.

anyone got an opinion to share ? feel free to add additional categories if you'd like.

Well folks ,usually losing the thread in lyrics after a line or two due to attention span or distraction,I must say the only one that ever kept me listening through the whole thing was 'Snowblind'.Had a little relationship to you know what years ago,and Dennis and JY got it right in the ,I mean on the nose with that song.
Please don't tell anybody.OK.
2 songs in a row, probably any 2 songs from Equinox.

Best Lyrics

CASTLE WALLS

Best Line

THE BURGERS ALWAYS TASTE THE SAME ...Music Time.....naaaaaa only joking thats the worst line from the most embarrasing song from a rock band EVER along with Hiphophiphopcrissyhiphop

Best 2 songs in succession...

JUST HAVE TO GO FOR SIDE 2 OF PIECES OF EIGHT.....MATERCLASS

Worst 2...............anything off Kilroy except for Havent we been here before.

Best Musically...

CASTLE WALLS, SIMPLY THE GREATEST ROCK SONG EVER along with we were friends by Dare, July Morning by Uriah Heep Soldier Of Fortune by Deep Purple and Fools Overure by Supertramp.

ANYONE EVER HEARD OF THE BRITISH BAND DARE........CHECK OUT THEIR BELIEF ALBUM....I SENT A TAPE OF LEAD SINGER/KEYBOARD PLAYER Darren Wharton to Tommy when they were looking for a replacement for DDY......it was too late they had already hired GOWAN....but i can honestly say if Darren Wharton would of got the Styx gig you would not be calling this guys vocal ability/keyboard playing/ songwriting as he is in my opinion in the top 10 singers on this planet.

Added two new at bottom

BEST LYRICS-The Grand Illusion, has it nailed down. Hip Hop... also is good, lyrically that is, Goodbye Roseland, Just get thru this Night.

WORST LYRICS & WORST LYRIC-Plexiglass Toliet "On fear of on his banana it would land" give me a break!!!!!!!!!!!

BEST LYRIC-"and if I see a light, should I believe, Tell me how will I know." from Show Me the Way.

BEST SONG MUSICALLY- Castle Walls (and the live version on Dennis' new live cd is even better), 1996 live version of Grand Illusion off of RETURN TO PARADISE. Goodbye Roseland, 1983 live version of Too Much time on My Hands from Caught in the ACT, and These are the Times

WORST SONG MUSICALLY-Heavy Metal Poisoning, this song could have been great if it wasn't "Dr. Righteous" singing. Hip Hop, at times the music is awful, but when I think of it as Dennis making fun of Hip Hop, it's just bad, not awful, great lyrics though!

BEST VOCAL-JY's Young Man and These are the Times, DDY's-Goodbye Roseland, Come Sail Away, Suite Madame Blue. TS-On My Way, and Fooling Yourself.

WORST VOCAL-JY's Right Away and Heavy Metal Poisoning. DDY's Music Time, TS's Sing for the Day and Never Say Never

BEST LIVE-Miss America (1983), Grand Illusion (1996 with DDY and 2000 with Larry) Too Much time on My Hands (1983)

WORST LIVE-Best of Times (1983), Lorelli (JY vocals 2000).

I have to say... I really enjoyed Just Fell In... It's not a Styx song really, but I thought it was a really clevar song and would have been better on a TS solo record.... but I do enjoy this one. "I just fell into a manic depression and I really want to spend it with you." ... clevar... note that there are two songs dealing with mental disease on Brave New World. "Number One" which also has a great lyric "Who'se that walking through the door? Whose not wasted anymore? Who gave up that crazy war inside you".

I like Just Fell In. I find it ridiculously fun. But from a lyrical standpoint, not one of TS' better works. But if you check some of my old posts I have always liked the song.

But seriously, who decided the placement of songs on that cd? Shuddering.

HAHA! I cannot believe I wrote down Fooling Yourself, I like Superstars so much better anyway. A very great much over looked fantastic song. For years when I was younger, this was my fav song off the best album ever.
I have adjusted my post that to deejay..

Best song - Musically - (tie) Pieces Of Eight AND Lights

Best Lyrics - I'm O.K.

Best Lyric - (tie) "If we were granted just one minute, to choose a dream and stay there in it, how could we decide?" AND "Some happy, some sad, I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had . . "

Best consecutive songs ( 2 ) on a single LP/CD excluding compilations: Grand Illusion and Fooling Yourself (You throw Come Sail Away in there with those two and that just about epitomizes everything that's great about the classic Styx sound, IMHO).
