Blue Collar Man - Again

Postby SuiteMadameBlue » Sun Jan 02, 2005 3:11 am

I had to go back to my last year's post and update how many times Blue Collar Man was released (the added ones are highlighted). Okay, as of right now looking at the cd's available on Amazon, we're at 14 releases of "Blue Collar Man" on cd. This year with the "new" covers cd, it will make 15. Are they trying to go for the Guiness Book of World Records?

Please, someone, anyone, answer this: Is there any other band or artist that has recorded the same song (they're own song) so many times?? (live, different versions, etc). I've never heard of this before.

These are just the American releases, BCM was released QUITE a few more times in Japan, Canada, Holland and Germany so it adds to the count.

Some of these were first released on an album and then became available on cd.

Pieces of Eight 1980
Caught In The Act - Live 1984 & 1991
AM 25th Anniversary Classics Vol. 15 1987
Styx Radio Made Hits 1975-1991 1991
Styx Greatest Hits (I) 1995
Return To Paradise 1997
Arch Allies 2000
Styx:The Singles Collections (Import) 2000
Styx Extended Versions-The Encore Collection 2000 (BMG)
Styx 20th Century Masters-The Millenium Collection 2002
Styx At The River's Edge-Live In St. Louis (CD) 2002
Styx Rockers 2003
21st Century Live 2003
Come Sail Away: Styx Anthology 2004

By the way, yes I do have a little Too Much Time On My Hands at the moment - LOL

Paradise Nevada- You have got both tunes.

The CD ; Blue Collar Man Anthology you also have 11 other versions of the song, plus the bonus of Billie Bob and all his different wives singing it, also the special double bonus of Tommy's wifes sixth grade class singing that along with Renegade. The list keeps growing......

Almost forgot, There is a CD floating around out there titled" The Barbershop Chronicles" in it you will find a rendition where Tommys wife hums Blue Collar Man while giving Dennis a hair adjustment. This occured back in 1998 right before Tommy and Dennis did their Borders rendition of Come Sail Away!!!!

Come Sail Away appears on Styxworld, although it's up for debate whether that version counts, I'm sure. What about the Southpark soundtrack? :D

I understand there is a Golden Edition of Come Sail Away in the works to be released in 2027 on its 50th anniversary of release as a two-CD set of only Come Sail Away tracks.

Dennis DeYoung, who turns 80 that year, will be performing a special cut where he will be found to be in great voice. He cannot, however, accompany himself on keyboards due to the flare up of that football injury he received filming the Desert Moon video 43 years prior.

This special Golden Edition: Come Sail Away will include bonus CD’s of Blue Collar Man: 49 Years and Counting. There will be eight of those.

Or you can have them directly downloaded to the special Microsoft Music Brain Implant (MSMBI) that many music aficionados will have purchased and installed by then.

On the Rocker's cd, JY and Tommy helped picked the songs to put on there. I have this (2003) interview on video. Also JY doesn't say anything bad about Dennis. A must see - LOL

On Come Sail Away:Styx Anthology, Dennis didn't have any say on what songs were chosen. I'm not sure if JY and Tommy or if it was just the record company.

The live concert cd's with Blue Collar Man songs were picked by Tommy and JY.

I know most of the greatest hits cd's the songs are picked by the record company.

I'm just wondering why they keep recording just this song over and over. WHY????? I'm not including all the Styx tribute bands recordings.

As for "Come Sail Away", the South Park & Styxworld versions do not count - to me  As well as the "Freaks & Geeks" television cd.

I just think it's kind of funny that there will be another version on their new "cover" cd that will be released later this year.

I had gotten the impression from a couple of different interviews that he did have a say?!?! :?

I thought so too at first. Then I went and re-read them. The one that sticks out the most was just that he was "well represented" on the cd. And he is, however, I don't think he was given input for the Anthology.

The normal ones, like Lady, Suite Madame Blue, Babe, Pieces of Eight, Come Sail Away and a few others.

None of the songs you mentioned made the cut, nor would he include them. Truth be told, I like those songs, Great Expectations in particular.

Suite, didn't they include a song from CycloCarrot too? I thought I remembered one of those was included.

The choices for The Anthology were ok. But much good stuff left off.

For the life of me....! Shooz??? I just don't get it! And two of their very best, and most popular, rocking songs, Born for Adventure and Queen of Spades, are nowhere in sight.

I think it is a very odd collection myself with some great album cuts left off and odd choices included.

It is no surprise that Greatest Hits outsells it consistently.

Just looked it up on Amazon. Here is the complete list:

One:
1. Best Thing
2. You Need Love
3. Lady
4. Winner Take All
5. Rock & Roll Feeling
6. Light Up
7. Lorelei
8. Prelude 12
9. Suite Madame Blue
10. Shooz
11. Mademoiselle
12. Crystal Ball
13. Grand Illusion
14. Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)
15. Come Sail Away
16. Miss America
17. Man in the Wilderness

Two:
1. Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)
2. Sing for the Day
3. Renegade
4. Pieces of Eight
5. Lights
6. Babe
7. Borrowed Time
8. Boat on the River
9. A.D. 1928
10. Rockin' the Paradise
11. Too Much Time on My Hands
12. Best of Times
13. Snowblind
14. Mr. Roboto
15. Love Is the Ritual
16. Show Me the Way
17. Dear John
18. One With Everything

I'll answer...yes they included One With Everything.

While I don't like all the choices on the cds, all I was trying to say was that Dennis was represented on the cds. Input was another matter.

I think Bugsy, Yogi and I all just posted at the same time. What are the odds of that?

I new there were more songs, I just didn't look at my cd and compared it the first time.

I just noticed that I didn't even play this cd yet. I guess I'll have to play it tonight :)

Okay, we are at 17 for CSA compared to 15 for BCM. I don't know why you don't want to count some of these versions. If it is because the original artists didn't appear on them then you have to eliminate 5 or 6 versions of BCM.

I don't think they are going for any kind of record with either song.

The Beatles' "Yesterday" is the most covered song in history, appearing in the Guinness Book of Records with over 3000 recorded versions.

Believe it or not, I don't think I've ever heard a version by anyone other than the Beatles. What are the chances of that? Weird.
