I know we all enjoy Styx music (in one form or another), but I always get curious about what non-Styx music everyone is listening to. Having said that, what are your 5 most recent non-Styx musical acquisitions?

Here's mine:

Some of these are groups/artists I've liked in addition to Styx for years, some before..

Elton John: mainly anything from the classic 1970-1975 period, but some '80s and even more recent.

Ben Folds: Rockin' The Suburbs- This guy has some potential.. If you like piano music and like me, wish it was incorporated a little more into modern music, give this a try. Not every track is gold, but when it's on, it's on.

Matchbox Twenty: More Than You Think You Are- not the most imaginative writing, but for newer music, some of this stuff is pretty decent.

Eagles: Sometimes I love these guys, other times they bore the crap out of me, but sometimes their stuff really hits the spot. They have a two disc collection from the last year or so that's really a great listen.

Toto: It all started when I caught some of their 25th anniversary show.. I saw them do a whole lot of material I had never heard of, so I picked up some of their individual albums. If you just know them for songs like "Roseanna", & "Africa" you are missing out.

Journey-even without Steve Perry, they still rock, give new guy Steve Augeri a try.

Foreigner-too bad Lou is out, should get back Johnny Edwards (Unusal Heat), or try to get Kevin Chalfant (The Storm, Two Fires) or Brain Howe (Bad Company)

Train-good music

Van Halen-only with Sammy

Little River Band-picked up a couple of their newest cds the other day, not bad.

Rush-just got Feedback, not as bad as I have heard everyone say. It's not a new Rush cd, but it is good to hear a cover cd from them, didn't think I like it, but I did-ERIC

My music tastes are so wide-ranging it is hard to make a good list.

I listen to, in no particular order, The Beatles, the Who, Def Leppard, Kansas, Journey (with Steve Perry), The DLR version of Van Halen (tho' I like one or two of Sammy's songs with the group), Steely Dan, Tears for Fears, The Police, Sting, Genesis, ELP, Ozzy, AC/DC, The Guess Who....that rock list goes on and on.

I got into country music some in the early 90's, fleeing from the rap and crap that dominated radio, MTV, etc. in that era. So I will listen to Willie Nelson, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Garth, Clint Black, Dolly, and the Dixie Chicks, upon occasion, but am not a fan of the cookie cutter hat acts out there now for the most part.

And I like, sometimes, some straight AC music like Neil Diamond (the early years), Josh Groban (some), Joni Mitchell (though she is more folk), Dan Fogelberg. I even like a few Barry Manilow songs too.

And already I have gone on too long.

CURRENT STYX: Best thing they ever done getting rid of that awful sounding singer DeYoung

JAMES YOUNG GROUP...Love his solo work and the music he made with Jan Hamer was awesome,and is without question the voice of Styx. Agree with everything he says about DeYoung and is rightfully crowned the king of Styx....I LOVE YOU JY

Thanks for sharing, everyone. It's fun to see that we have some common bands on our lists, but that everyone has something unique on their list as well. Interesting that Journey made a lot of lists (a band with a somewhat similar situation as Styx). By the way, pieces, with perhaps the exception of Queensryche and Judas Priest, I like the looks of your list!

Suite Madam Blue...Ime Darren P but I have not got a recording contract ...YET, that was just my fiance being a brat...lol.

Dare are up there with Styx in my opinion when it comes to quality music.
You will not be dissapointed in this band I even emailed Tommy to get the lead singer/keyboard player Darren (what a great name) Wharton to replace DDY when i found out DDY was gone but they had already got Gowan. If Darren had of joined Styx there is no way on this planet anyone would be dissing his singing as his voice and keyboard playing/songwriting/art design/production skills are second to none. Well maybe Froy would...lol
If you get a chance try and get a copy of the last 2 Dare releases Belief and Beneath The Shining Water. They are musical masterpieces also great albums are there other 3 Out Of The Silence, Blood From Stone and Calm Before The Storm.
Darren Wharton started off as keyboard player to Thin Lizzy when he was just 17, they seen his talent at a young age..lol

Ime off to see Dare open for Asia here in the UK in March.

I'll have to check out the band Dare!! Sounds very interesting.

I was impressed with Kraan when I received a copy. I'm trying to open my music world and listen to other bands!!

Yogi, you'll be happy to know that I received Glen's new cd. I'll be listening to it over the weekend and I'll let you know what I think.

I don't want to keep bringing this up (but what the heck), but under the circumstances when Dennis was kicked out of Styx, I wouldn't support the line-up no matter who the lead singer was. When I heard that Rik Emmett might have been approached, my heart sank. I really like Rik Emmett and I would have been so torn. The lead singer of the local band Styx Tribute band "Light Up" was also approached. I would have been torn too. Now I found out there were 2 more lead singers from "local" bands (one in IL (?) and one in Canada (?) that were approached, all at the same time before/during Gowan. Very interesting. Each person told about the "auditioning". I wonder how many more were asked to audition or send in their videos?

I know Amazon.com stocked Dare,s Belief Cd and was only $9.99 but that was a year ago. That Cd included loads of acoustic guitar, pipes and strings also there is probably the most beautiful ballad ever written on that CD called We Were Friends (Lisa and I are walking down the aisle to it...lol) its so emotional and the song starts off with the sound of the ocean crashing onto the shore and builds up into an unforgetable masterpiece. PLEASE PLEASE check it out. His latest release is called Beneath The Shining Water another awesome AOR melodic rock master show. The bands first 3 albums were more Journey/Styx ish pop rock hDare.s 1st CD is rated very highly and people rate it in the top 20 AOR CD,s of alltime.
Just imagine the voice of Dare fronting Styx I wanted DDY but this guy would of been phenominal.

Yes, the version shown was edited. You can add the songs Iris and Name to the ones you saw, plus some extra footage in between songs. There's also a short documentary. The CD includes all tracks from the DVD (with slightly different editing) plus the studio version of Give A Little Bit. It's an outstanding package and very nicely done; I hope your wife enjoys it!
