What is a "Rock" band?

Postby SuiteMadameBlue » Wed Feb 16, 2005 11:52 pm

I started this new thread for Classic

(Hey Classic, are you going to Green Bay?)

I just copy and pasted my thoughts from the other thread. I'm sure we talked about this last year, but I don't feel like looking for the original thread.

I don't understand about Dennis not being a "Rocker". What is a "Rocker"?When I think of "rock" music, I think of bands like Metalica, Motley Crue, Megadeth, Judas Priest, AC/DC, these bands play "rock" music. The current Styx, to me, does not play "rock" music.

What are your opinions of "rock" music?

Well, STYX recently released an album called "Rockers"

That should give you some clue.

Oh yes, with classic rock material on it like Crystal Ball.

Or would the clue be...release an album out of spite and watch it sink in terms of sales.

Now to get back to the point of this thread, when I think of "rocking out" I think it implies no ballads, songs with pounding beats, and not a lot of emphasis on lyrics, moreso on the music. But I could be wrong.

I know, but I talked to a few so-called "music experts" and they said a band to be called a "rock" band, the band does not have keyboards in it. A true "rock" band consists of guitars, bass, drums and vocals, that's it. They considered Styx a "Pop-Rock" band, they don't play heavy enough to be a "rock" band.

Most of the bands that I like have the keyboards/piano in them. Doesn't Rush have keyboards on some songs? Does Aerosmith? I'm having a field day arguing with them right now - LOL

Yikes, I never knew there were so many "types of bands" - LOL Heavy Metal, Speed Metal, Rock, Pop-Rock, Pop, Bubble-gum Pop, Techno, R&B Rock, R&B, etc. etc......................

Sadie we wrote and posted the same time again - LOL

Even when Damn Yankees were together, they had a type of ballad songs, they didn't totally "rock" out.

I know Tommy and JY (Tom and Jim-LOL) want to play more "rock" songs, but they're not. Their new album wasn't really full of "rock" songs.

"Rock" is a very diluted term anymore..........I think there are as many definitions and there are opinions.

My definition of Rock is:

Any music featuring Electric instruments ( Keyboards or Guitar ) and a rythem section with a minimum of Bass and Drums that is up tempo

AND SOUNDS BETTER WHEN YOU TURN UP THE VOLUME !!!!!

This excludes most ballads, unless they have an up tempo instrumental solo, or build to a chendo at the end of the song ( A great example would be Styx - Lady )

as a side note, Suite, I cant make Green Bay or Chicago, I'm still not working regularly...until I am, I have to conserve resouces for silly things like the Mortgage, food and Utilities. I'm closing in on what I think is a great opportunity, but not there yet. We will end up at the same show sometime, maybe this summer...

Classic, I hope things go better for you.

Thank you for your opinion on "rock" music.

I have a feeling we'll be at the same concert this summer

I see.

So, Van Halan isn't rock. Led Zeppelin isn't rock. The Who isn't rock.

Keyboards have always been in rock. Ask Little Richard, or Jerry Lee Lewis. I have to wonder where anybody gets the idea where a 'rock' band has no keyboards...because history dictates a different story.

Rock is a broad based genre that, IMO, has more to do with attitude and emotions then a specific style. Rock is not something that should start with a capitial letter, such as Progressive rock...which can be defined to a very narrow defintion.

True, DY had ballads...But, as Ted said, they had ATTITUDE!

That's why I used quotations when I said "music experts". Anyway, are there really "music experts" out there? I don't think so. I think everyone just has their opinion on the different types of music.

How to classify Styx is probably what drives the critics nuts and might explain why they always seem to give them bad reviews :D

I'm not sure how I view Styx in musical genre terms. I've always thought (pre-Kilroy) that their albums were best enjoyed as a single work. Would that be "album-oriented" rock? I have no idea. Very few albums (IMO) stack up to the Grand Illusion from start to finish, but several albums that outsold it probably have some better individual songs on them.

My stereotypical rock band consists of lead singer (with or without guitar), lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass, and drums. Keyboards may be used occasionally, but not regularly. One ballad per album is plenty. That would be the official ek88 perspective on a rock band :D

My best guess for Styx would be pop-rock with a greater emphasis on rock in the earlier years, and on pop in the later years.

Styx has ALWAYS been a 'rock' band. Styx will never be a 'heavy rock' band unless JY sings lead on all the lead vocals. I own a promo CD JY put out called JY the big tall blond guy from Styx. That CD is a heavy rock CD.

Even when Styx did Cornerstone they were a 'rock' band. Alot of pop, but to me thats still rock.

They almost got into the new wave genere with songs like Roboto, High Time, Music Time, and even Cold War.

My point is they are DEFINATELY a rock band. I would put them in the rock catogory with groups such as Journey, The Eagles, 80's Bad Company, REO, Loverboy, Triumph, Cinderella, Bon Jovi, Def Leopard, Van Halen, hey the melodicrock type category!!!
