Comparing Ticket Sales

Postby SuiteMadameBlue » Thu Feb 17, 2005 12:42 am

New topic, new thread.

For those inquiring minds, Dennis is doing pretty good with his tour dates. At a few venues a sell-out doesn't always mean that EVERY single ticket is sold out. For example, the Motley Crue concert is listed as a sell out (in Milwaukee), but you can still buy crappy seats and single seats throughout the building, so "technically" it's not a sold out concert.

This past weekend (Saturday) Dennis played a concert with his band in Phoenix, John Waite was the opening act. It was considered a "sell-out" with 2469 tickets sold. Styx played there for a few years, I could be wrong, but the most tickets they sold at this same venue was 1281 and that was on 6/23/02. Other "oldie" or "older" acts that played at this same venue, Brian Wilson played 3 months ago and sold about 1,000 tickets, Kansas played 2 months ago and sold 750 tickets.

I know there are a few of us on here that like to compare sales and talk about it, in a nice way (if those who are wondering why I'm posting this info!!!!!!!!!!!!)

When Dennis played at the Civic Center here, which holds about 3,000 people, it was half full at best.

When Styx/REO performed the Iowa State Fair, two years in a row they sold 10,000 tickets. When Styx alone performed at Prairie Meadows a couple years ago, they filled the "floor" seating outside with a couple thousand, and filled the inside bleacher seating for hundreds more. The place was absolutely jam packed.

If Styx performed the Civic Center here (and I wish they would, great sounding venue), I have little doubt that they would sell it out. I doubt VERY much that Dennis will ever sell more tickets then Styx here.

I think it depends on where they play, how often they've been there, and how much promotion there is for the show.

Styx recently played right outside Chicago at a venue that holds 1800 seats...and they didn't sell out. They sold roughly 1200. I didn't hear much promotion for the show, which may have been a factor.

While people should go and enjoy the show (whichever one they want), I myself, do think perhaps Styx has played a little too much in the last few years. That's not a criticism, rather a personal opinion.

Peace,

Sadie

One could cite this sellout, this non-sellout, Dennis sold this, Current Styx sold that, etc. I think a lot of it is apples and oranges. Different shows for different folks in my book.

I do believe that if Current Styx plays the same venues, or areas, over and over again, that mostly the die hards would be attending after awhile.

Certainly this would happen to Dennis as well, but he does not do that.

I also think the numbers of tickets sold have a lot ot do with their price. You might have 100 buyers who can fork over for a $75 ticket but you may have a 1000 who can pay $35 or $40. And super-cheap, or free, will certainly bring in the numbers. Maybe even people who are not fans, but just want to hear some music from someone.

And we have talked here before about changing up the setlist. If fans feel they are truly getting a different show, they may be far more willing to pay up and see the new stuff performed.

Last, what Sadie says is gospel. Promotion sells tickets. Pure and simple.

My take on this for what its worth....ok, not much.
