"Pieces of Eight" Live

Postby SuiteMadameBlue » Wed Feb 23, 2005 12:09 am

I guess this would be for Froy, Dave and Sadie - or anyone else that heard it

What did you all really think of hearing the live version of "Pieces of Eight" especially with the piece (of music) he added in the middle?

This would be for fans that have seen Dennis live.

Do you enjoy when Dennis adds extra pieces of music to the songs?

I was just wondering. I thought the extra piece in the middle of "Pieces of Eight" really made the song, especially live.

I really enjoyed it. I thought in general the orchestra was under-utalized. So moments like this that featured the orchestra were hilites for me.

Its just like when I first heard Lady with the orchestra the Bellaro part was different Now It feels like it should have been there all along

I need to hear it again so Im not thrown off by the middle part
I love Pieces of 8
I applaude Dennis for doing it
He has so many others he can bring out that would freak us out

Why Me
Borrowed Time
This Old Man
Father
This Is The Time
Paradise

The list goes on and on
I must admit hearing Castle Walls and Pieces of 8 was something I never thought would ever happen. :P

The finest of Styx' Classic recordings always had an orchestral feel to them --- at least my favorites did.

Using a bit of Mozart here, Ravel there and now Grieg in Pieces of Eight is a natural progression.

Dennis had matured. His voice has matured. He has added a more "grown up", if you will, approach to much of his music.

What I like is he doesn't overdo anything. It is just the right amount. He uses the orchestra when he needs to and his band when he needs to and creates a show that is a great mix of his music, classical music, and entertainment.

Now I didn't see the Milwaukee show, so I am curious as to where you thought the orchestra should have been used more.

As to Suite's question, yes I liked the inclusion. I think Dennis and Arnie Roth do a great job in picking which pieces of classical music to insert into the songs.

At the Milwaukee they were going to start with a 40 piece orchestra, well the stage really isn't that big, then they went down to 34 and found out that the stage still wasn't that big (LOL) then it ended up being a 24 piece orchestra.

I thought it worked well, but that's just my opinion. I'm just so happy to hear any music live :)

On the more rocking songs I couldn't even tell that the orchestra was there. I saw them playing. But I couldn't hear them. I really only noticed the orchestra when they played by themselves or with very little accompaniment from the band.

Fair enough. I myself have never had that problem, nor have I heard that anywhere else, so I will assume it was the venue. Thanks for explaining.
