Toad Suck Daze craze begins
Entertainment lineup, T-shirt design unveiled at chamber's Second Monday Luncheon
By ROB O'CONNOR
Log Cabin Staff Writer

'Tis the season for Toad Suck. The 2005 Toad Suck Daze festival, scheduled for Friday, April 29, through Sunday, May 1, in downtown Conway, was officially kicked off Monday with the unveiling of the 24th annual Toad Suck T-shirt design and entertainment lineup at the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce's Second Monday Luncheon, sponsored by Metropolitan National Bank.

With all the fun, fried food and frivolity, it's easy to forget the purpose of the festival is to raise money for scholarships.

"It's all about education," said Cindy DeRosa. DeRosa and her husband David are honorary co-chairs for the 2005 festival.

Proceeds from the 2004 festival will fund $35,000 in scholarships awarded this year, including three $2,500 scholarships to the University of Central Arkansas, two $3,750 scholarships to Hendrix College, three $2,500 scholarships to Central Baptist College, one $3,000 single parent scholarship and two $1,000 technical school scholarships. In addition to the scholarships, the Toad Suck Daze Committee will contribute $2,500 to the UCA, Hendrix and CBC endowments.

To date, proceeds from the Toad Suck Daze festivals have provided almost $390,000 in scholarships.

In addition to the usual cornucopia of cholesterol-laden cuisine, a couple of new food items this year will be Dip-n-dots ice cream and Toad-sted ravioli and cannoli.

Also, the Kiddie Corner has been renamed the Toadal Kids Zone with activities for young children and "tweenagers," including Toadal Fear Factor, science experiments performed by Mad Science of Little Rock and Creature Features from the Little Rock Zoo.

There will also be a Toad Suck SuperStar singing contest.

Country music star Lorrie Morgan will perform April 29 and former Styx singer Dennis DeYoung will perform April 30. Conway acts Anxiety and PopSonic will also perform on Saturday.

LOL, Classic! You found a good one!

Well, it IS in Arkansas, after all......

Do you think those "toads" live down there among the cornstalks and buffalo chips?

Hey! If he can play THIS festival, why not the Mosquito Festival in Clute, Texas! I can go to that one!

Let the jokes begin indeed!

It's just another music festival. I see that Little River Band and Night Ranger player here a few years ago. I guess it's a fun time, especially the "World Famous Toad Races" and the "Toad Pageant" - LOL

Oh yes the Milwaukee Zoo..... I ended up seeing Loverboy there, AWESOME show. They had about 4000-5000 people there and when Cheap Trick was there, yes at the zoo, there was estimated 6000-8000 people there. I know that Styx played at a zoo too and also the famous corn fest - LOL

I'm never going to complain about a venue, except a cornfield. Anyway, I'm so happy to see any of my favorite bands/artists anywhere.

Thanks Monker for thinking about me today

Oh, by the way, if anyone wants to get nasty with this one, I'll have a field day posting articles with a couple of venues that Carrot Styx has played this past couple of years.

I'll be back later today!!! (Just thought to let you all know in case you miss me)

No need to get nasty on either side.

I just find it humorous at the various events that happen across our nation. You can't blame any artist over the name of a venue or the event.

Give them a stage and they will play.

No need. The DeYoungians of days' past have already been there, done that for the last 5 years. In fact, I believe "Carrot Styx" fans have *always* been glad to see them play wherever they can. It was always *other* fans who made a point to go out of their way to slam the types of venues they were playing and using that information to provide "proof" that Styx was washed up. Now, I'd be lying if I didn't say I don't find it just slightly comical that Dennis is playing these same sorts of venues now - and it's OK. lol

FTR, I think it's great that Dennis is allowing himself to get down and dirty and play for people who want to hear him. I give him kudos.

What is SO wrong with that? is it bad that they're not pretentious?? That they don't require fru-fru cushy venues with velvet seating? Actually, I think it would be more approprate to say "Give them enough money, and they will play" because I can get a stage together pretty darn fast if that's alll it takes!!!

Back in the old days, I would see concerts in arena's and concert halls. I paid the big bucks to try to get good seats and then finding out that about the "brokers" and that I'd never get the "great" seats unless I paid top dollar. That was it for me. I even sold my Motley Crue tickets ($200 profit), thank you very much, especially since there coming back into town.

I'm not going to repeat my July 1999 cornstalk story, I think I posted it on here over a dozen times - LOL

Now I love going to Summerfest and even the County Fairgrounds (LOL), waiting 7+ hours in the heat, rain, thunderstorms just to sit in the front row. I have such a blast with the crazy die-hard fans like me, it's worth it. And the prices are even better, I usually can get in the fairgrounds/Summerfest for free, you can't beat that :)

I really was not meaning that in a negative way. Performers love to perform.

They put themselves through a lot of hell to do so, but the rewards of getting to play their music for an enthusiastic crowd makes it worth everything.
(What is that old Dan Fogelberg line: "The audience was heavenly but the traveling was hell.")

I was just commenting on the truth of that statement NH made. The venue really matters very little when the lights go up and the music starts.
