The "Styx" Sound

When I saw Dennis in Houston a few years back right before he played My god Can Beat Up Your god he said something like' this is for all my critics that say I cant rock anymore'.

As bad as I thought that song was then, I think it is even worse now. Dawn Marie makes a horrible song even worse when seeing it live.

It was a GREAT GREAT concert, but that one 'rockin' song along with regae version of Light Up were the low points of that concert.

Finally, I REALLY liked Glen's versions of Tommys Styx songs. Glen did ALL of them justice. The Edge concert was awesome!!!!!!!

First of all it was not a regea version of Light UP only the end of the song had a regea riff to it
Second of all its ridiculous to point out 1 song and say it was a low point of the show. Big deal 1 song out of 20 go to the can next time.

Enjoy the old records. I am one of the lucky ones who can still look forward to a new Styx CD and appreciate the music for what it is,

Its a cover cd enjoy it,.

I like the type and sound of Styx music and to me the new Styx songs are as good as and in some cases better then SOME of the old stuff.

If DDY recorded something that I liked I would be happy to say so. I would really like to see that happen.

I have read Styx has been filming promo spots for “Big Bang Theory”. I would expect we will see the same type of TV spots for Styx that are running for Joe Cocker.

I saw the "Edge" tour too. It just wasn't the same without Tommy during that tour for me and having someone else singing his songs. The harmonies I didn't mind, not at all, just the lead vocals. Just my opinion.

I didn't mind Glen's versions (of Tommy's songs), he didn't "suck", it just wasn't the same for me.

Does anyone remember the set list from that tour?

I liked it better. Then again, the only "classic" Styx concert I had to compare it to was KILROY, and we all know how that went.

I also enjoyed it more than in 1996 and 1997. But then again, we all know how THAT went.

I didn't, however, enjoy it more than from 2000 on. Then again...LOL

Ive got that concert on VHS. I think it was from St. Louis. At one time I posted the setlist. I remember they closed with Not Dead Yet, they also did Love Is The Ritual, Show Me The Way, Edge Of The Century, All In A Days Work & Homewrecker. Six songs from a new CD. It was awesome.

The concert I saw in Minneapolis Glen also sung Blue Collar Man, Too Much Time On My Hands, Snowblind & Renegade. The bootleg VHS I have Glen swaps Fooling Yourself for Snowblind. Dennis performs Lady,Babe, The Grand Illusion, Come Sail Away, Rockin The Paradise, The Best Of Times & Dont Let It End. JY adds Miss America to the mix. I may be wrong but they didnt do Suite Madame Blue. It was either that or they didnt do The Grand Illusion. What ever it was it was a GREAT GREAT concert and Glen anlong with the rest of the band shined,and the crowd LOVED it.

Dennis did himself claim My god was a hard rockin song. To me it was 'PURE' broadway!!

Finally, I saw the Kilroy show 3 times and I thought it was GREAT! Maybe their best ever. Equally as good as The Paradise Theatre. I did not like the album. I literally hated side one of that album. Side two as with most Styx albums was waaayyyyy waaaayyy better. The album to me was almost as bad as their Wooden Nickle efforts( minus Styxll), but the actual concert ROCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it is. It's a rock song. It doesn't have to be loud for it to be rock. "Best of Times" is a ROCK song too. So is "Lady" and "Come Sail Away." "My God" is Broadway-esque with electric guitars. :-D

That's exactly what I was going to say. CB is a rock song in the same way that "Lady" is. It's starts out slow and builds and does that MULTIPLE times...unlike "Lady", which starts slow, builds and then keeps rocking until the end.

I think if you go to some generic "Classic Rock" forum and post a MP3 of "My God" and ask if it's a 'rock' song, you will get a RESOUNDING "What the hell are you posting that here for?" answer.

Yes it is a rocksong in my book also.It does have a slow build-up though.
I have not heard the 'god' song.so i can't make any comparisons.

Actually, it's a little harder than you might think to pick out which songs by Styx are actually "rock" songs.. If someone were to attempt to put together a collection of Styx rockers(oh wait, they did, but seriously) what songs would be included?

There are some obvious choices, "Miss America", "Blue Collar Man", "Renegade", but then what about "Crystal Ball"? It's played on classic rock stations, but it never really rocks out. One could also ponder the inclusion of "Come Sail Away", it picks up, but first there are two verses with soft piano.. Going by that rule, however, what about "Suite Madame Blue" and "Snowblind"? They both start out slow..

Going by my own judgement, I would say that "Madame Blue" and "Snowblind" would make it on board, "Madame Blue" gets pretty heavy(by 1975 standards), but because of the way that "CSA" begins, it just can't be considered a rocker. It's interesting to think how many songs are actually somewhere on the border..

The "Styx" sound is very distinctive - the dual leads, the harmonies, the warbling & wailing synth, and the cannon-like drums. It is for this very reason why Cyclorama picks up where Paradise Theatre left off as that distinctive sound is much more present on that release than all the previous ones (don't get me started on "Kilroy").

Unfortunately, since the death of Johnny, Styx's drumming hasn't been the same as Todd, for some reason, can't reproduce that patented, cannon-like sound from the toms that Johnny pioneered. That's not to say Todd sucks. Hell no! He's a fuckin' arachnid whose drumfills scream "Neil Peart, who?!?" Alas, he can't quite catch that Johnny sound, that deep and thundering GLOOM! sound on those toms.

Perfect example? The intro to "22 Years" ...

"I gotta pretty little mama ... GLOOM!

Or the intro to "Lights" where you hear Johnny start it off with ...

diddle-lit-dit-dit-dit-dit ... GLO-GLOOM!

That's was Johnny's trademark.

Todd doesn't do it, though. Don't know if he can't or won't or what.

And I miss that sound from the drums of present day Styx more than I do DDY.
