GREAT COVERS

With Big Bang Theory about to be released I was wondering what you thought were the best covers of songs ever. The TWO best I have ever heard and like MUCH MUCH better than the orginal are:

2. Metallica - Turn The Page
1. BTO - House Of The Rising Sun - AWESOME maybe the best song they did and it was a remake.

*** Others to note include: Hall & Oats - Youve Lost That Lovin Feeling, Ugly Kid Joes- Cats In The Cradle, and Guns & Roses Since I Dont Have You, Knockin On Heavens Door.

If I am betting this will be a pretty decent CD just because their vocals are soooo strong and their styles vary soooo much.

Yogi,

Don't forget that Guns 'n' Roses redid "Live and Let Die" on 'Use Your Illusion I'. The others (except 'Knockin') were on 'The Spaghetti Incident' which was a covers album.

Our Lady Peace did and outstanding cover of The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows"!

It's featured at the beginning of the movie The Craft .

I'm also fond of DDY's cover of Hendrix's "Fire". I like DDY's version better than the original!

BTW: Who here remembers the first cover done by Styx? (Excluding the use of classical pieces like "Little Fugue" and "Fanfare")

It's actually one of my favorite covers! Anybody remember it?

The Metallica version of Turn the Page is terrible IMO

Some Great Covers and there are not that many are

Neil Diamond Unchained Melody off the Stages cd better than the original
The Who Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting
Elton Pinball Wizard and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
Behind Blue Eyes Limp Bizkit
Aerosmith Come Together

Covers are either great or terrible IMO there is no middle ground

But their version of Queen's 'Stone cold crazy' is blinding.

Nancy Wilson did a solo live acoustic CD a few years back which had a couple of stellar covers!

"A Case of You" (Joni Mitchell)
"In Your Eyes" (Peter Gabriel) She really brought something new out of this version!

It may be hard to find, but it's worth looking for.

You can find BTO's rendition of House Of The Rising Sun on the CD Trial By Fire Latest & Greatest. This one song alone is worth the cost of the CD!!

Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now (Starship) by Starting Line: This version is fast-paced and all guitars. It blows the original away.

Last Kiss (?????) by Pearl Jam: Don't remember who sang the original, but I've heard it and much prefer the PJ version.

You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling (Righteous Bros) by Hall/Oates: I like both versions about the same, but I think the cover is well done.

Give A Little Bit (Supertramp?) by Goo Goo Dolls: I didn't even like this song until hearing the cover. Can't quite put my finger on what made such a huge difference for me, but something did!

Whiskey In The Jar (Queen?) by Metallica: Don't even know if I've heard the original but I'm pretty sure someone told me this is a cover song!

Shout (Tears For Fears) by Disturbed: Couldn't stand TFF, but I love this version.

When You Were Mine (Prince) by Cyndi Lauper: Personally, I think a lot of Prince songs would sound better by other artists :wink:

These are the ones coming to mind right at the moment; I'll probably add more later.

By the way, both Scandal and Journey did the song Only The Young? Any idea who wrote and/or recorded it first? I've always wondered, but have never found out.

Okay, now I'll give you that the original was very much in the vein of early bubblegum, but for me the Pearl Jam version was hideous. Just my opinion of course.

Journey wrote it. I think they even recorded it first. It was dropped off of the Frontiers album and later released as a soundtrack song. Scandal released their version before Journey, on the "Warrior" album.

I thought the music in the original was too upbeat for the lyrics. That's probably why I'm partial to Pearl Jam's version.
