Who do you think is singing lead on "Can't Find My Way Home"?

I think it may be Tommy. If it is Gowan, he sounds unusually good.

So now we have at least 3 people on this board who have access to clips from Big Bang and as far as I know none of them were looking for the clips and are not shall we say big fans of the current line up. Where are you guys getting the clips? I would love to hear them. :?

I think it's Gowan, but I can't be sure. Either way, from the clips I heard, I liked some of the material. It's too hard to tell from 20-25 second clips to be fair. I can say that, while some of what I heard was good, right now I am holding off on buying it. I am sure many here will probably enjoy it, and that's a good thing.

Peace

Surprise surprise! Froy doesn't like the new Styx album!

FROY: At first listen all I can say is why ?
ADAM: All I can say is why would you bother to review it? You have joined the Rock Journalist Snobs who've been bashing this band with negative reviews for 30 years.

FROY: Why did this band do a cover cd the music does nothing for me seeing that its copied material.
ADAM: There was a question in the first half of that confusing run-on sentence (I think). To beat a dead horse, this is not the first time Styx has covered songs - if it was okay for them to do before, why not now? And since you insist on calling covers "copies", then I can ask YOU the same question: Why did Dennis DeYoung do an entire cd of "copies" of stale, cliched material?

FROY: Blue Collar Man remake...Why fix something that was not broke ?
ADAM: I refer you to Dennis DeYoung's remake of Jimi Hendrix's classic "Fire"

FROY: Can't find My Way Home...it sounds just like the original ,
Good song They just do it the same way
ADAM: I guess they thought "Why fix something that was not broke?" and I guess only complete idiots would say such a thing. (PS Tell Eric Clapton's record label that his slowed-down, acoustic, bluesy remake of "Layla" which was a soaring bleeping hit record in the 90s was a bad idea)

FROY: Gowan please who told you you could sing ?
ADAM: Canadians did. Like it or not, he's had a succesful history up North.
Go back and listen to the original "Come Sail Away". Listen to DDY's delivery of the opening verse. The same question could be asked, who told THAT guy he could sing?

FROY: The bottom line so far is the STYX sound is only heard on I Can See For Miles...This is not a STYX record
ADAM: The words of a guy who has also written "just go see Dennis DeYoung 's Styx". Clearly, to Froy, Dennis IS Styx; if Dennis appears it's Styx, if he aint, it aint.
So why do we need a review from Froy?

FROY: Summer In The City...I was never a fan of this song in the first place
ADAM: AND SO WHAT? It's a freaking MASTERPIECE by an underappreciated 60s group. Why would you suppose it matters that YOU were "never a fan of this song"? Perhaps you should post such insightful thoughts on a Lovin' Spoonful board somewhere.
Wanna know MY opinion? I'd much rather hear a cover of a Spoonful song than one more Andrew Lloyd Webber song. Dennis - at his cheesiest - approaches Kathie Lee Gifford territory a bit too often for my taste. Does the world really need to have heard him sing a soing from "Cats"? What about "Summertime"? Does Dennis where Al Jolsen-style blackface while he sings that song live? Somehow those songs are deemed acceptable to Froy but a really cool rock song of John Sebastian's from the 60s isn't. Dude, your review has the same effect on me that Epicac does.

He likely *can* follow the rules, but just likes hearing himself talking in the third person. Ash thinks people who talks in the third person are NUTS :)

It's really Tommy? Really? For some reason his voice sounds a little different.

Whoa there fella, after you hear the "new" version, please be honest of what you think of BCM 2004.

"Layla" was awesome, both versions.

Adam, again, at least Froy didn't give each song an F, be happy. You sound like you work in a place where there's a lot of stress. You really have to lighten up.

Thanks for clearing that up. I thought Gowan had undergone a vocal cord transplant if that had not been Tommy singing.

That song sounds great, but I like Tommy's singing on just about everything he does. Too bad he is not still harmonizing with Dennis.

I don't think the issue is are the songs terrible
The issue is does any of them stand out
I Can See For Miles stands out the rest are just remade songs
The JY song is not a Styx song in fact none of these are Styx songs so how good can they be? This cover thing won't last more than a few weeks then its back to hundreds of concerts again.

Froy I don’t think they are expecting Big Bang to be a big deal. Ricky said he thought the fans would think it’s cool and fun but they are looking forward to the next CD of original material that they have already started to write and have recorded some demos for. It’s Universal who really pushed for the covers CD. Maybe it will blow over in a few weeks like you said but then again you never know. Look at what Michael McDonald and Rod Stewart have done with cover CD’s in the last year. Even Bon Jovi did a CD of new versions of their old songs.

It was pretty much what I expected, as I said above. I thought everything I heard sounded very competent, well sung, well played.

Is it "Styx" to me? No. But they sounded quite good, and some of those songs are long-time favories of mine. They seemed to respect the source and not go way out of bounds on their interpretations.

They are probably not going to set the world on fire, but as far as covers go, what I heard was fairly true to the originals. Again, for me, it would hard to answer objectively since the clips are fairly short.

I have now heard the 7 clips thanks to the nice people on this board. It is hard to come up with any kind of review from the clips but I can say that I was impressed with I Can See For Miles and Summer In The City the most. I Don’t Need No Doctor sound really good too! I am really looking forward to hearing Locomotive Breath and Wishing Well. Both of those songs should sound great with a Styx twist on them. The vocals on Can’t Find My Way Home sounded perfect and JY’s It Don’t Make Sense reminded me of his vocals on Double Life. I can’t wait to hear these songs in their entirety.
