UNFINISHED SONG

Postby yogi » Tue Apr 05, 2005 11:00 pm

I just received my copy of Styx's complete Wooden Nickle package. I must say that while I dont think its the greatest Styx song Dennis sure sings his asssssssss off on Unfinished Song. When he hits that 'Ill find a place for me' hes NEVER sounded better. That song might be his BEST vocal performance EVER. Damn it sounds good!!!!!!

Anyone who thinks Steve Perry was better back in the day ought to hear Dennis on this number. It gave me chills.

New Styx ROCKS, but Dennis will ALWAYS be the voice of the band!!!!!

There are some folks who don't seem to like this song. (And Dennis has given off hints that he does not like it much, either). That said, I thought he gave one of his most mature vocal performances on it.

Quite powerful. It sounded great live, too.

OK, I will!!! :P

Actually I wish Dennis would take this exact show to a LOT of venues --- they can be small --- all over the country.

I want to see it again and I hope everyone else can too.

I hope he keeps both those in. Desert Moon is one of my favorite song by him. Saw him do Show Me the Way vocally with Styx, and it blew me away, so I don't mind the music not being there.-ERIC

For the Lost Treasures concerts I agree that he should lose Desert Moon. While it's a lovely song, it's the wrong song for that show. Orchestra shows, absolutely keep it in. Show Me The Way worked for me. I think they all do a really good job with it. Just my opinion of course.

The show was absolutely wonderful!!! That being said, I would have liked a lot more "lost treasures" and a lot less top hits. JMO, but I wouldn't have missed Babe, Lady, Mr. Roboto, Desert Moon, Show me the way, etc. at all if they'd been replaced with songs like Grove of Eglantine, Mother Dear, Lonely People, etc.

As for Unfinished Song, I will always love this song, even if Dennis doesn't necessarily care for it.

Welcome Newbie. With the name you are sporting here I would think you would want Dennis to also add Evil Eyes to his set. That song TRULY is a lost treasure that REALLY showcases Dennis's UNMATCHED vocals.

John C. sang lead on Mother Dear.

Welcome EE!

I would love for him to expand the show and add those other treasures. OK, I guess that might put him in the hospital!

Yogi. Mother Dear lead vocals were sung by John C, but all the harmony on it was Dennis. What a great song that was! I love everything about it.

Hello EE

I like the choices for addition to the Lost Treasures show. Evil Eyes I think would be great.

Perhaps one day...

Until then. Jump in, enjoy the fray. The people here bite from time to time, but all have had their rabies shots.

Now that Dennis is playing Unfinished Song, he can no longer say he is playing HIS songs. No wonder he doesn't like it.

You lost me there, since he cowrote the song with Chuck Lofrano.

So if Dennis wrote a song with someone else it is HIS song?

Just trying to get the definition right of 'HIS' song.

In his concerts Dennis says he sings songs that he either wrote or co-wrote.

In that regard, I would think he would view them as his songs. Just as I think anyone who helped write or wrote a song would.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I hope I have time to keep up with all the action here!

Can't believe I left Evil Eyes off my list! I would most definitely love to hear this one live as well.

And, while DeYoung didn't write the lyrics to Unfinished Song, he did write the music and, to my knowledge, he's the only one of the group who ever sang it, so, yeah, I'd consider it "his" song. Besides it was touching to know that Chuck Lofrano was there to hear it performed.

There are going to be a few surprises to his setlists with the upcoming concerts and you just blew one of the surprises!!!

20 slashes with a wet noodle to you

Oooh, actually I would only want to hear this song live with the "3 harmonies" together.

Seriously, there are a few songs that he's still considering adding to a few shows........................ (LOTR,maybe????)

HE should add another guitar before he adds another song.

Doesn't that depend on the song(s)?

As for Snowblind, I'm guessing no. I mean he wrote/co-wrote a whole lot of songs, but I doubt he'd add them all. I, of course, could be wrong here. Wouldn't be the first time that happened.

HE should add a second guitar to all the Styx songs. They were written for 2. 1 doesn't really cut it.

You know, I can understand it's hard to go see Styx and hear Larry sing a couple of Dennis' songs, but it's also a scary thought for me to go to a Dennis show and hear all those Styx songs without Tommy and JY on stage playing guitar! However, if he comes close enough (hopefully without the orchestra), I will still go with an open mind.

Funny, until it was mentioned here, I'd not even realized the second guitar was missing. Perhaps the omission was covered by the orchestra? But I most definitely didn't miss it at the HOB show. hmmm....

Don't be scared, you'll be okay. :D

I think it's more scary to hear Gowan singing Dennis' songs than going to a show without Shaw and Young. I'm trembling with the nightmare of hearing Gowan sing "Lady". I've been listening to that song for over 30 years weekly (yes, I have no life - LOL) and I shudder with the thoughts of anyone else singing that song. I'm still shuddering..............

Dennis did a lot of fill-in work with the keyboard. I am thinking this gave some songs at that show a fuller sound, to me.

I do believe he lets the orchestra do the work on some songs in those types of shows.

All that said, I would like to hear a second guitar on some songs. But then, I play guitar.
