An evening w/Styx

Postby onestilllearning » Tue Apr 12, 2005 8:08 am

Hey all, I have tickets to see Styx alone at the Melody Tent in Cape Code, MA 12th row center which I paid $55.00 for. I can also buy Styx / .38 Special tickets in Giford, NH through a broker for $155.00 ea . My daughter age 13 has seen Styx with me 3 times and plays guitar, she really want a guitar pick and 4th row might do it but 12th won't - should I pony up the extra dough and if I do will I be missing a better show not seeing Styx without a opening act? Styxfannh what are your thoughts about the two venues?

It's been ages since I've gone to the melody tent, but its in the round and is a unique experience. I haven't decided whether I am going or not, but closeness of the seat is not an issue for me. Sometimes I like watching the stage show instead of one musician. With the stage set up and the rotating stage, there is no such thing as "center"; just thought you might want to consider it.

Gilford is a whole other issue. I know Tommy loves that venue which explains why they have played there 3 out of the last 4 years, but from a fans point of view it is horrible. The stage is about 8 feet off the ground and the front rows are to close to the stage. I actually have 12th row for here and am happy with those, being a little further back here is an advantage based on the slope of the ground. The venue overall is ok, but on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 6. A trick I find at this venue is that the ticketing system doesn't usually hold a single seat, but if you call the venue for tickets, they may tell you if they have single seats hanging on the end of a row if you ask them for them. The tickets here are $49 face value. Personally, there are few bands I would pay $150 for today. I can count them on my hand and none of them are Styx.

I know its not the same as getting a pick at a concert, but $10 on ebay will get her that pick. And with the money you save, you can see DDY in Beverly on June 24th. Your choice on how you feel about Dennis, but it would give her an appreciation of his music vs the songs Styx is leaning toward now.

Your choice, just some things to consider.

Thanks Mark I appreciate the input - How do you know TS likes the meadowbrook venue? Is from the posts after the concerts which he no longer seems to do?

As an aside who would you (or anyone on the board) pay $150.00 or more to see in concert today ? Throw in bands that have broken up or are no longer around (dead members) what band and what would you pay?

For me it would be Pink Floyd with Rogers AND Gilmore - $300.00

The Floyd show you describe ( with Waters and Gilmore ) is the only show I'd even consider at that price......and Since Mrs Classic isnt a fan I'd have to find someone to go with.

Until George passed a few years ago, I also would have paid whatever it took to see a show with Paul, George and Ringo together.

I wouldnt pay more than $50 a ticket to see anyone else at this point, all of my favs are getting old and dont have the energy to put on a show worthy of the money anymore.

Floyd would be worth it though, as long as they did a show worthy of their legacy, they could just stand and play, as long as the effects meet their usual high standards.

This was his quote that is on the meadowbrook site after they went the first time.

-Last night in New Hampshire we were impressed by the massive turnout in the newly improved pavilion at the already awesome Meadowbrook Farm. It still blows my mind to drive to this seemingly remote location, only to find it is summer getaway central for people who live within driving distance. Beautiful lakes all around, populated by those out to have a good time. ZERO tension to be found ANYWHERE. Now the venue has an enormous roof making it a weather resistant amphitheater and it was packed. Kansas played another stellar set before us, which must have had a great effect on the audience because when we took the stage they were stoked. It's always a pleasure to see and hear Kansas. They are so damn consistent. See you soon...
