What makes a band/artist a "rock" band/artist?

Postby evileyes » Sat Apr 23, 2005 4:03 am

OK, the "Top 40" thread prompted me to ask this question. Just what makes a band (or artist) a rock band? My hubby & I argue this question fairly regularly. For example, he doesn't consider Styx (as he knows them) to be a rock band. (Please forgive me for marrying him!) I mean how can you not consider the band that gave us Rockin' the Paradise, Borrowed Time, Midnight Ride, Miss America, Renegade, etc. a "rock" band?! :x

Now I realize this is a very subjective question, based solely on each individual's definition of a "rock" band. Just curious what others think.

Well, Kiss certainly released some "metal" albums:

Creatures Of The Night
Lick It Up
Revenge
Asylum

for sure... among others...

I'm not too fond of labeling music either. I'm always arguing regarding the labels. There's Heavy Metal, then Speed Metal, then rock bands, then pop rock bands, then pop bands, then bubblegum pop bands, it goes on and on - LOL

I have no clue

I personally don't see Kiss as a "metal" band. I see Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, old Metallica as "metal" bands.

EE, I think this is SO subjective. Some people call anything with electric guitars and drums "rock." Others divide the term rock into many different levels of definition.

We already have a mini-debate here over just one group, Kiss, as to the rock category they fall into.

I tend to think the electric guitars and drums put a band/artist into the rock category, but then the divisions begin as to "what kind" of rock they are.

I certainly consider Styx a rock band in every sense of the word.

I guess you need labelling. If someone asks you to describe a band the labels do come in rather handy. You can ofcourse compare to another band, but that may also draw a blank.
I would say Styx is a rock band though.
