I prefer Styx, but I have no idea under what authority my calling them "better" would have any validity.

Overall - Styx

Right this moment - Styx

If Perry were still with Journey I would say Journey - here's why .......................Key member of Styx DDY, JY and TS - Sorry but to me the Panozzo brothers are inconsequential since thier creative imput was limited and thier technical skills replaceable. So currently 2/3 of the talent remains. For Journey I would say Perry was about 65% of the talent , therefore his departure (no pun intended) was of greater consequence.

Currently -- signature voices are gone from both groups. So I will just flip a coin.....

Back in the classic times -- apples and oranges. Both groups were great. Each had a really different sound. Very different songs. I prefer Classic Styx but it does not mean they were "better."

An interesting question.....considering this is a Styx bb, I suspect a majority of people here would say............( could it be ) Styx ?

I will say I'd much rather listen to Steve Augeri sing a Classic Journey song vs listening to Lawrence Gowan sing a classic Styx song.

It's sort of like asking which is better, Red or Blue ?

Overall, counting all cds from both groups Styx. Even back in both classic days. But at the moment Journey. Really can't wait for their new cd of NEW material. Augeri is awesome!!!!! Like him better than Perry. Can't say the same for Larry against Dennis. Nothing against Larry ( great keys, and good writer), but vocally he is not Dennis. But he does fit good into Styx.-ERIC

Yes, Perry maybe the "voice of Rock", and the greatest singer of all time, but Augeri just HAS IT. He knows his place, and wasn't afraid to take the place of Perry. Sounds a lot like Perry, but has a slight difference., Well Survivor is on time to go-ERIC

65% of the talent? Perry may have been 65% of what you liked about Journey, and that is fine, but there is no way you can equate that to 65% of the talent. Perry was no where near as fundamental to the songwriting process and overall sound and direction of the band as Dennis was, with the exception of "Raised On Radio". I would bet that Jonathan either wrote most of the lyrics that Perry sang, or the two of them wrote them together. In fact, Jonathan is a cowriter on EVER SONG from Escape thru TBF. You are vastly underestimating the talent of Neal, Jonathan, and even Steve Smith.

Quite honestly, I prefer Augeri to Perry also. Because with Perry, Journey would never tour again, and would probably never record again.

As for which band is better, Styx or Journey....I think Neal blows away Tommy or JY on guitar, but Tommy/JY are better singers. I think Todd is the better drummer compared to Deen, but Deen has a good voice.. I think Gowan is a better keyboardist then Jonathan and he has a better voice. But, I think Jonathan is the more talented musician and songwriter. I'll say a toss up between Ricky and Ross...but Ross could probably make goofier faces.

Monker,

Very nice take on the respective bass players.

I also agree that Augeri is a more than satisfactory 'replacement' for Perry, but I would stop short of saying I prefer him.

Most Journey fans, of which I consider myself one, would agree that Schon's guitar virtuoso is as much of the Journey experience as is Perry's voice.

Two incredible groups no matter how you cut it.

Cheers to the legacy of both!

I agree 100%

Now on to the poll.......

Styx now and always! When you go to a Styx concert 75% of the songs are sung by the original singer. At a Journey concert that number drops to about 5%. Case closed!

You can throw in Queen at 0% and Foreigner at 0% Chicago maybe 40% Van Halen about 65%

To add to my last post I was not trying to slam Journey. I like the new Steve and think he does a great job. I like a lot of the songs on Arrival and am looking forward to the new CD.

True. I suppose if a person is a middle of the road fan, with a fairly even regard of DDY and TS stuff, it's still a pretty decent show. Most of the shows I've gone to only incorporate 3 songs formerly sung by DDY (4 when they've done Lorelei).

I love both bands, but Styx will always be no1, GI and POE are unbeatable classic rock. At the moment JNY are kicking some serious ass, Augieri is a fantastic replacement for Perry. Nobody can ever match DDY, don't think Larry even tries, but he is in his own right a great artist, I'm glad they carried on.
