The Daily Herald

Styx, "Big Bang Theory"

Styx jumps into the popular fray of covers worship with 14 intriguing remakes on this new CD -- which hits store shelves Tuesday. Generally speaking, the most successful cover tunes are the ones that not only pay homage to the original but also take it somewhere new.
Indeed, the ultimate compliment one can bestow on a cover is to actually prefer it over the original recording -- no small feat. "Big Bang Theory" is a success on both fronts. "I Am the Walrus" and "Locomotive Breath," by the Beatles and Jethro Tull respectively, never really did anything for me before, but I find myself wearing these inventive remakes out on the new disc. Other highlights include "I Don't Need No Doctor," "Summer in the City" and "Manic Depression." The song that really knocks my socks off though -- I must literally listen to it barefoot -- is "Wishing Well," a Free song that's made me a slave to its grind. Styx even tackles one of its own classics, offering a tasty blues version of "Blue Collar Man." Goo goo g'joob.

So you've actually listened to it in its entirety? Then, and only then, I MIGHT view your opinion with a bit of credibility.

This was once a muti platinum selling band who now is doing the same thing as the local bar band and you guys are all hoped up like this is there huge break , Please talk to me when they sell a cd that sells at least 500 thousand units , The credit should not go to Styx but the credit should go to The Beatles The Who Tull and CSN
Once again there cashing in on other peoples sucsess.

Froy,

Wake the hell up. EVERYONE is doing covers Ask Metallica, Guns,Rod.... the list keeps growing& growing & growing...............

YOU and EVERYONE else here knows in 'YOU'RE'( Did that one right there Bad Jovi Medicine) eyes if Dennis was still in Styx it would of been a brilliant idea for them to do this.

'Your' ( screwed that one up there These Days Jovi) the shallowest 'so called' Styx fan on the planet.

Was I talking to Froy, or Def(Deaf) Jovi??????????????

Classic Says:

Hey Yogs........I think the correcting grammer posts are bogus, but just this once I'll chime in. The correct spelling in the sentance you wrote would be y-o-u-r. Unless you meant to say "everyone knows in you are
eyes.............." ( You're = You Are your is used in all other instances )

I agree with the point you made in the post though.

Its a rippoff Abitaman its the easy way out
Styx knows when they stop there done so they will do anything to keep going and a rippoff cover cds fits the bill
Yea look at all the cover cds happening none are doing anything there all tanking . In there heyday STYX did not follow the trends they set them
Without Dennis Shaw and Young are just followers and this cd proves it

If they have a forum (or forums) somewhere, by all means.

I careless what it sounds like

If you truly care less, then what's the reasoning behind labeling it a downgrade? Someone who doesn't care wouldn't even bother :?

Please talk to me when they sell a cd that sells at least 500 thousand units

Why is it so important how much it sells? Did you not buy a Styx album or listen to them before they sold 500,000? Do you not own the Wooden Nickel albums that didn't go gold? Do you not own Brave New World? Do you not own any of DDY's solo albums? I was misled by many of your posts into thinking you were a diehard fan dating back to their roots. Apparently, you're just a bandwagon fan that jumped on after they started going multiplatinum (which I realize isn't true, but BY YOUR OWN LOGIC, it's the only conclusion that makes sense).

They are a bunch of kids in the area and according to you there the same as STYX,

I careless what it sounds like

Any band that does an entire cd of covers is down grading themselves
That 's the fact jack
They should have waited and come out with there own material.

Please talk to me when they sell a cd that sells at least 500 thousand units

Why is it so important how much it sells?

Because a band with the same name STYX sold multi platinum for many years and now they can't even sell 100 K but they advertise themselves as if its the same damm band
Thats WHY.

Did you not buy a Styx album or listen to them before they sold 500,000?

NO

Do you not own the Wooden Nickel albums that didn't go gold?

Yea I bought them after hearing GI

Do you not own Brave New World?

No Its in the garbage

Do you not own any of DDY's solo albums?

I own Shaw solo cds and none of them sold but thats not a band its a solo artist big difference

I was misled by many of your posts into thinking you were a diehard fan dating back to their roots.

I saw the STYX BTO show in 75 but I did not buy anything till GI .

Apparently, you're just a bandwagon fan that jumped on after they started going multiplatinum

Apparently, DDY is "cashing in on other people's successes."

He did an album/cd of covers.

Just like Rod Stewart. Just like Michael McDonald. And so on, and so on, and so on........

No difference at all - no matter what genre of music it is. A cover is a cover. Period.

Mr Froy - your remarks are contradictory to say the least.

Happy Tuesday Everyone!

You’re bringing back some memories with that one Froy! I haven’t thought about WDHF in years. Wasn’t it 95.9 or something close? How about WDUI 94.7.

John Mellencamp recorded a covers cd called "Trouble No More" I guess that make him washed up.

Come to think of it, every band you mentioned is past their prime.

We'll just have to agree to disagree here.

they advertise themselves as if its the same damm band

Fair enough. I see some truth in that statement.

They are a bunch of kids in the area and according to you there the same as STYX,
For me personally, I'd say they're the same in that they still put on a quality live show (IMO) and their last studio album (Cyclo) was a step back in the direction of older Styx music that I enjoy. I think they are different in that they lost a tremendously gifted vocalist and songwriter in Dennis. (However, his songwriting went downhill after Paradise Theater, in my opinion).

Because a band with the same name STYX sold multi platinum for many years
What's your take on EOTC and Dennis' recent live album. Are they both crap for not going multi platinum? Just wondering.

Yea I bought them after hearing GI
Well, that's probably a good thing. You seem to be a big Father O.S.A. fan. If not for the multi platinum albums, you may have never heard that song.

So what how about Shaws song writting and JY's song writtting
You can't think Cold war was a great tune
And as far as JY 's song writting no need to even go into that ,'

Because a band with the same name STYX sold multi platinum for many years

My take on EDGE is it was not a STYX cd so not going platinum is fine
To let Burtnick in and to let him have so much control was crazy
I like Dennis's songs on EDGE but the rest I can live without,
As far as Dennis's new cd how can it go platinum its a live cd
I think only Framptons did that,

Wrong. There have been a zillion live albums to go platinum.

"Framptom Comes Alive" was just one of the first, if not the first, double live album to go multi-platinum.

Kiss "Alive!" soon followed and went multiplatinum also and broke them into the bigtime.

So there was 2 big deal
Bottom line live cds dont go platinum compared to studio cds
Then take a solo artist and try to find one

There have been many more than two to go platinum. Live albums by most "big" artists tend to go platinum.

I see you never let facts get in the way of a good argument though.
