You know, it's silly letting the froy's and IML's distract this forum from such a good album. If they can't accept the reality that BBT is a good album that is getting a fair amount of airplay, that's their problem...and I'm not going to allow their problem to be mine.

I'm not going to respond to their antics and dull the enthusiasm for this album and its songs. I hope others do the same.

When news of this album came out, I was very disapointed because I want NEW Styx songs. I wanted Styx to expand on what they started with Cyclorama. I did NOT want another album full of songs that I had already heard hundreds of times already...like another of the endless compilation album Styx has released over the past few years.

That is NOT what this album is. Sure, it is covers...so what. Many of them I have never heard the original version. Those that I have heard the original version are done faithful to the original spirit that they were written in. The Styx 'sound' is VERY evident all over this album. It gives Gowan a chance to prove himself outside of the DeYoung comparison...and IMO, he does an incredible job. It's a very entertaining listen from beginning to end, not just a bunch of songs being performed as close to the originals as possible.

True, MediaPlay is not the 'industry standard' chart. But, it IS a good indicator of what is being played on the type of radio station that Styx is/should be targeting. To have so many songs off the album being played on radio is VERY good news for both Styx, BBT, and every other classic rock band out there...Radio WILL play new songs by the older bands.

Finaly, I have to say that releasing BBT was a good decision by Styx. In the beginning, I felt it was a big mistake...But, I was wrong. The music is better then I expected. The reaction of radio was better then I expected. It seems the fan reaction is even better then I expected.

This release and the tour can be a good way to launch a new album with new songs, and the tour for that. It's not the "Santana moment" that Styx has talked about - but I think it is a good step forward. A step that Styx has needed to made for a VERY long time.

Good point. If Big Bang has some success it will only make it that much easier for their next album of original material to get more recognition. Let’s see how far Big Bang goes. It’s off to a good start so far.

Froy: "Styx cashing in on other artists work and you think its great"
Dennis: "I have often walked down this street before...Summertime and the living is easy...oh my MAMMY!!"

Froy: "Shows how much you know about music"
Adam: On behalf of EVERYONE here I'd like to apologize to Froy for our being so ignorant and ill-informed in the presence of a great music business mind like yours.

Whatever duuuude... I have listened to BBT and even complimented it on it's production and playing.

That said it's still a covers album... whoop-de-freakin-doo.

If you don't want me to address your posts then don't make silly comments such as the one where you said "Salty Dog" was as good as or better then "Come Sail Away"....

It's too bad that Dennis stopped doing songs like "Come Sail Away". When I listened to "A Salty Dog", the first thing I thought of was how awesome the song was. The second thing I thought of was, "Wow, Styx should have been recording songs like this 25yrs ago."

It's songs like "A Salty dog" and "These Are the Times" and "One with Everything" that prove to me how far away Styx moved from what *I* felt made them such a great band. It shows how weak and out of touch Edge and Kilroy really were...and what they SHOULD have been. Where did the fantastic instrumental bits and fantastic lyrics go? Why did it become a good thing to write love ballads instead of something musicaly inventive, lyricaly inspiring, and interesting on every level? It's mystifying to me that some people call themselves Styx fans but are satified by a simplified, watered down, version of the sound that made the band famous.

Edge probably had more airplay and sales then BBT will ever have...But, BBT sounds more like Styx. BBT will be played by me MUCH more often. BBT, IMO, is a MUCH better album.

Hey Monker - I agree with you regarding some posters on this board and frankly, I've pretty much left this board because I just can't stand reading it anymore. These people post two-three responses to every positive post and only demonstrate how their anger and bitterness is ruining their lives. If it wasn't, they wouldn't need to vent it on a non-stop basis.

That said, lets not take that opportunity to slam dennis. Sure, you are welcome to your opinion ... and on some points I agree with you... I just don't want what some idiot (who happens to be a DDY fan) does on this board to define all of us who happen to wish DDY was still in Styx. I kinda read the above as somewhat of a dig at DDY and if that's not the case, then I stand corrected.

I picked up BBT on iTunes because I don't buy CD's anymore. So far I like about half of it. But I'll keep listening with an open ear to see if the other half falls into line (one way or the other).

Peace

True...but I think Journey will have a tough time without a label that can support them. It seems Universal has done a better job with BBT then Sony did with Arrival, and Journey did with Red 13.

And who does froy remind you of on the Journey board?

Ah, he could be any number of Perry fans. Just take a post: JY and replace it with Neal, Dennis and replace it with Perry, Tommy and replace it with Jonathan, Gowan and replace it with Augeri, and Styx and replace it with Journey...and you have a raging Perry fan.

Yes, it's true - Most Perry fans want the current Journey to fail, and most DDY fans want the current Styx to fail. Strange how fans lock onto one member of a band like that.

I am going to pick up the Styx CD at Target tomorrow. I have heard a few samples and like what I hear!

No, I'm not trying to 'slam' DDY. If that was my intention I'd just do it and put his name right in the post.

What I am saying is that the musical direction Styx took after PT was a bad turn. Styx has tried to turn back lately with both Cyclorama and BBT. It really makes me wonder where Styx would have gone if they had not taken a turn for the worse with Kilroy.

Yeah, I know, Dennis was responsible for that turn. But, I'm not trying to lay blame...

I remember listening to Kilroy and thinking "What the hell was that?" and then listening to Frontiers and thinking "Ah, at least Journey is still cool." I remember listening to Edge and thinking "What is that?" and then listening to it again and thinking "Ah, yeah, this sounds like a Dennis solo album, a few solo songs from Burtnik and then there is JY's song...and the only one that really sounds like Styx to me is JY's song." I can probably count the number of times I've listened to Edge on one hand.

The point is is Styx has been missing the boat for a VERY long time...Now they are starting to catch on to what fans want or expect from them. That is a good thing.

And the 3rd thought is its a copied song
Which kills the entire buzz.

It's songs like "A Salty dog" and "These Are the Times" and "One with Everything" that prove to me how far away Styx moved from what *I* felt made them such a great band.

All bands move in different directions look at Genesis as an example
The bands last cd WE Can't Dance was fantastic except for the title track
Its not easy to find a band that keeps writing the same material year after year ,
The current STYX does not have to worry they just copy other bands material and run to tell there fans how great they are ,
And Monker runs to the board to say its a terrible idea to do a cover cd then a few months later changes his mind .
That wishy washy STYX fan can't make up his mind,

It shows how weak and out of touch Edge and Kilroy really were..

Kilroy was great when people talk about STYX they always mention
Mt Roboto again they were way ahead of there time
Haven't we been here Before a great ballad nothing on Rama or Bang even comes close.

It's mystifying to me that some people call themselves Styx fans but are satified by a simplified, watered down, version of the sound that made the band famous.

Its funny you say this and praise the band for doing a cover cd
Man your way out of touch/

Edge probably had more airplay and sales then BBT will ever have...But, BBT sounds more like Styx

Yea its sounds more like STYX and people on this board are asking who is singing certain songs ,
Monker your losing it man.

Mr. Roboto will be making a comeback this summer :)

As for Journey, again and again, I like all versions of Journey. All the upteen members were and are pretty good through the years.

I wouldn't say that MOST of the DDY fans want Carrot Styx to fail. With Carrot Styx going on "the never ending tour", it keeps bringing sales up for older Styx albums/cds which is GREAT for Dennis. Just my opinion.

That's your opinion. I personally think Kilroy is a GREAT album and stands up with the rest of their material quite nicely.

It's certainly a stronger album overall than Cornerstone or Crystal Ball if you ask me.

And it's got the coolest Styx album cover ever...

In what form? Some hype from what at first glance looks like a pretty lame movie? Roboto has had its "comeback", and faded away again...it's nostalgic and good for a cheap (or expensive) laugh, but it's not going to be in the mainstream ever again.

I wouldn't say that MOST of the DDY fans want Carrot Styx to fail.

I wouldn't either, since a number of them are still Styx fans.

So, what are you saying? Are you just trying to spin a Styx factoid so it gives attention to Dennis instead of Styx? That's how it seems and it's very froy'ish of you.

It seemed like they were trying to do something like "The Wall" or "Tommy". But, they only went halfway. At least half the songs did not seem to be written to the story. Oh, sure, you can stretch your imagination out and somehow place them in a story that Styx didn't completely flesh out...However, it is VERY obvious that the band was NOT fully into it and the 'concept' and 'story' suffered for it. If they could not go all the way with it and put it at the same level as "The Wall" or "Tommy", then they should have realized it wasn't working and they should have stopped, shelved the idea, and moved on to something else - something that WOULD work, that they could take the full distance, something that would stand next to their past as an awesome album and experience.

Man, you just NAILED the whole Kilroy CD......that's exactly how it was !
When time travel is invented, someone should print out your post ( PC's weren't very popular yet in 1983 ) and give it to Dennis !

That's your opinion about the movie. I'm looking forward to seeing it. Seeing how Dennis is going to be dressed and his bandmates is suppose to be funny. Never Say Never on what songs could be back in the mainstream, you never know.

Just trying to throw something a little positive on the board. Maybe I shouldn't have just said Dennis, I should've included Chuck, JY and the estates of John P. and John C. and how they all benefit with the sales of older cds & Greatest Hit's packages. I'm not sure where Tommy stands with the older songs. I thought at one time he sold most of his rights on earlier songs.

You're always so negative Monker, it's very sad. But hey, I still hope you have a great day!! :)

It'sMyLife - I personally think Grand Illusion is the coolest album cover. I like Kilroy too :)

Oops, I'm so behind on posts.

Monker, ChicagoStyx had already mentioned this on another "thread"

Think about it, if Styx were to have a hit album, that would also bring Dennis to the forefront. It would increase sales of the back catalog and ticket sales for both Styx and Dennis.

I don't think ChicagoStyx or myself were being "Froyish" mentioning Dennis' name with the BBT release.

I know that if South Park can only move a song from obscurity to nostalgia that some other movie is not going to do any better.

Just trying to throw something a little positive on the board.

Don't try to act so innocent. All you are doing is throwing some lob for somebody like froy or IML to pick up and run with it. It's not going to work this time, intentional or not...at least not without me pointing it out ahead of time, so the blame is layed at YOUR feet. I'm tired of seeing the pattern.
