An Honest Big Bang Review....Honestly

Postby swwskj » Sat May 14, 2005 3:23 am

Okay, I've had the newest long player from the newest incarnation of Styx rotating in my car long enough that I felt I could give it an honest appraisal. I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion of the album itself, rather than chart positions and album sales. So without further ado...

Track 1-I Am the Walrus-Great remake. Yes Gowan sounds more comfortable with this song. I guess covering Lennon is better suited for his vocal style than covering Dennis.

Track 2-I Can See For Miles-True to the original. One of the few songs that I had even heard of before BBT. Tommy does a good job with it, but his vocals are overpowered by the instrumentation. Sort of a shame actually, since Tommy's voice is so distinctive and has held up well over the years.

Track 3-Can't Find My Way Home-MUCH better and clearer vocals from Tommy on this one. Nice acoustic guitar work. One of the few mellow tracks on the album. A good song, but not a great one. Still overall a nice track.

Track 4-It Don't Make Sense (You Can't Make Peace)-Sit down everyone...GREAT vocals from JY. Yes, I actually said that. Not the best song to cover, but with JY's signature singing and the style of the guitar solo in the middle of the song, this song honestly sounds like it could have been on Crystal Ball or Equinox. I kid you not. (See I can give credit to JY, when credit is due.) :D

Track 5-I Don't Neen No Doctor-If you are looking for a song that RAWKS, this is it! Gowan shines on this one, perhaps his best vocals ever. One of the few on this album that are going to the Ipod.

Track 6-One Way Out-Good version, nothing daring which if you like the Allman Brothers version, you'll like this one.

Track 7-A Salty Dog-When I listened to BBT for the very first time, I tried to pick out which songs were the type that grab you from the start and stick with you. This was that song. Second best Gowan vocal ever. (would go on the Ipod, but I use it to run and would need to stop and sit down for this one). Not the greatest song ever mind you, but about as good as you can get within the limits of the original.

Track 8-Summer in the City-You've heard the original, so you've heard this one. Insert Tommy's vocals and amplify the guitars and you've got this song. Not too bad overall.

Track 9-Manic Depression-Didn't like the original, this song makes it 2 for 2. For me, the first stumble on the album. Gonna hit the skip button with this one. I know some people rave this one, but it ain't my cup o' joe.

Track 10-Talkin' About the Good Times-This may be the most interesting song on the album. There really isn't a true lead vocalist. Tommy and Larry use harmony vocals the ENTIRE song. Makes for a really original sound. I would say that Larry is slightly more dominant, but you can hear Tommy throughout.

Track 11-Locomotive Breath-Solid JY vocals on a song I don't like. I don't blame JY, I blame the song itself. Once again not one I would have chosen to cover.

Track 12-Find the Cost of Freedom-Nice Harmony vocals, boring song. See track 11 statement. Fortunately its barely over a minute long.

Track 13-Wishing Well-Strong Tommy vocals + Good song = Heavy rotation in the car.

Track 14-Blue Collar Man @ 2120-Not the radical departure that I expected. However, since I own it almost 10 times on various live, hits and studio albums, at least this time I got a version that I didn't already have.

Overall a solid record. Musically and Vocally strong. Not the material I would have liked to hear them do, but that's me. Not as strong as Cyclorama, but worth the $7.95 and then some. If you are on the fence, fall to the side of picking it up.

Here is Yogi's honest review of Big Bang Theory:

1. I Am The Walrus- Excellent re-make of a song from a group that I dont really care for. It made me go out and purchase my first ever Beattles CD . I like Styx and Gowans version MUCH MUCH better.
2. I Can See For Miles- I CANT stand the Who. Even with Styx singing I do NOT like this song. Thank god they didnt remake Squeeze Box!!
3. Cant Find My Way Home- Good re-make of a song I wasnt that familiar with. I like this song.
4. It Dont Make Sense- Great lyrics, that sure make sense today. Big Bang seems to have a kind of an anti war theme in the song selections. Still I dont like this song or JY's version at all.
5. I Dont Need No Doctor- Very hard rockin song. Gowan does an excellent excellent job again.
6. One Way Out- I dont care for this song at all.
7. A Salty Dog- The best track on the CD. Gowan sounds GREAT. I still believe Gowan could slide into Rush or even Triumph without too many people knowing the difference in the voices of Gowan vs Lee vs Emmett.
The song kind of reminds me of when Dennis Deyoung penned songs such as Father OSA & This Old Man. I realize Styx didnt write this one but Gowan makes it SHINE!!
8. Summer In The City- Very Good re-make. Tommy and Styx sound real good on this. If I was the lable I would try to release this baby in early June. It could hit again!!
9. Manic Depression- AWEFUL!!! I am NOT a Hendrix fan, I am even less of one now. Horrible re-make of an aweful song
10. Talkin About The Good Times- I REALLY like this one also- Great harmonies and again Gowan is EXCELLENT! This is the sleeper on the disc Excellent!!!!
11. Locamotive Breath- Strike Three JY!!!!!
12. Find The Cost Of Freedom- Haunting song espically in the world we are now living in. Great Harmonies it leads into:
13. Wishing Well- Very Good Track. Tommy does an Excellent job here as Styx seems to sort of keep the anti war message rolling.
14. Blue Collar Man@2120: Fair remake it just goes on way toooooo long...
.
Overall- For the price its a good purchase. I am NOT a big fan of cover CD's but Styx does OK on this one. JY's songs flat out stink. He would of been perfect for a song such as House Of The Rising Sun yet the tunes he chose I personally dont like at all. Tommy does a decent job with his selections and songs.Without a doubt... Lawerence Gowan's songs save this disc. He is the STAR on this CD!!
On a scale of 1-5 I would give it a 3 at BEST. I would tell anyone who is not that familiar with Styx to purchase Equinox, Pieces Of Eight, The Grand Illusion, Cyclorama, Paradise Theatre, Edge Of The Century & Cornerstone way way before purchasing this CD.

As a die-hard Styx fan I CANT see myself listening to this disc that much after the next few weeks. It will get spins about as often as Kilroy or Crystal Ball get from me. Thats my HONEST take on Big Bang Theory!!!

Walrus-Great song, Great vocal from Larry

I Can See For Miles-Great harmonies

Can't Find My Way Home-Blind Faith lite

It Don't Make Sense-nope it sure don't.

I Don't Need No Doctor-STYX has never rocked this hard! This song is a keeper.

One Way Out-True to the original. Great guitar interplay. Nice drum solo

A Salty Dog-Best song on the album. Gowan owns this song.

Summer in the City-a good remake

Manic Depression-Pat Boone couldn't have done it better.

Talking About The Good Times-Trippy!

Locamotive Breath-Styx should drop Manic Depression from their live set and replace it with this song.

Find the Cost of Freedom-over before it starts

Wishing Well-Too heavy handed

BCM-Better than I thought it would be

Over all I give this album a B

How long until they release some new original material?

It seems so far that the concensus is that Locomotive Breath is a miss, while the Larry material is a hit. I have really been coming around on Larry's singing lately. As long as he doesn't cover Dennis, the guy is good! The ONLY way to listen to this album, as ChicagoStyx pointed out, is cranked on a very good stereo.

I have been so impressed with Larry's stuff lately it has inspired me to change my tag line a bit.

"One thing remains: Larry, You must confront Larry. Then and only then a Jedi you will be. And confront him, you will."

Okay I guess we can all get into practice, only six days left 'til episode 3.

A little more seriously, I do not find being a DDY fan and Larry fan mutually exclusive. While I find Larry's songs enjoyable I can honestly say that if I met Dennis tomorrow I would tell him:

"I am now, and always will be, your fan"-Oh crap that's Star Trek isn't it.....

I like the video a lot. I like listening to it on CD, kinda.

Track 2-I Can See For Miles-True to the original. One of the few songs that I had even heard of before BBT. Tommy does a good job with it, but his vocals are overpowered by the instrumentation. Sort of a shame actually, since Tommy's voice is so distinctive and has held up well over the years.

I mostly agree. Tommy does a good job but the vocals are so high at times it becomes a bit irritating thinking a guy can actually sing those notes!

I agree...This is my favorite JY song on the album. I think this song fits him better then any of the others on the CD.

Track 5-I Don't Neen No Doctor-If you are looking for a song that RAWKS, this is it! Gowan shines on this one, perhaps his best vocals ever. One of the few on this album that are going to the Ipod.

It's a wild song...It's not my favorite, but it's good.

Track 6-One Way Out-Good version, nothing daring which if you like the Allman Brothers version, you'll like this one.

It's interesting that everybody focuses soooo much on vocals. IMO, this is a TODD song. His drumming is way cool on this one. I have to wonder if HE picked out this song...it would be interesting to hear the bands's comments on it.

I've already said enough about this one. I think it's an awesome song. Definitely one of my favorite Styx songs now. I love it. This song alone was worth the price of the CD for me.

Track 8-Summer in the City-You've heard the original, so you've heard this one. Insert Tommy's vocals and amplify the guitars and you've got this song. Not too bad overall.

I agree. I actually like this one better then the original because I can understand Tommy's vocals better. It's a great song.

Track 9-Manic Depression-Didn't like the original, this song makes it 2 for 2. For me, the first stumble on the album. Gonna hit the skip button with this one. I know some people rave this one, but it ain't my cup o' joe.

Blah. Like I have said, I like the Rogers/Schon version. I think Styx nailed the music but JY's vocals just don't sound right here.

Yep, I agree...I like it cuz it's different. It's a dreamy sorta song but it's way cool, in a flower power kinda way.

Track 11-Locomotive Breath-Solid JY vocals on a song I don't like. I don't blame JY, I blame the song itself. Once again not one I would have chosen to cover.

This is another I really haven't listened to...

Track 12-Find the Cost of Freedom-Nice Harmony vocals, boring song. See track 11 statement. Fortunately its barely over a minute long.

It reminds me a bit of the pooem read towards the end of Cyclorama. I don't think it's "boring" if you listen to it as if it were the intro to the next song.

Track 13-Wishing Well-Strong Tommy vocals + Good song = Heavy rotation in the car.

Yep, I like this one a lot too...

Track 14-Blue Collar Man @ 2120-Not the radical departure that I expected. However, since I own it almost 10 times on various live, hits and studio albums, at least this time I got a version that I didn't already have.

I like this more then I thought I would, but it's not a replacement for the original.

Overall a solid record. Musically and Vocally strong. Not the material I would have liked to hear them do, but that's me. Not as strong as Cyclorama, but worth the $7.95 and then some. If you are on the fence, fall to the side of picking it up.

I think it's every bit as strong as Cyclorama....There are a lot of radio friendly, easily digested, songs on here. At the same time, I think it moved them a step forward from Cyclorama. I hope it's an indicator of where the next album is going...further away from Tommy's 7DZ sound, which I think is strong on Tommys songs on both BNW and Cyclorama, and more into using Styx roots as influence along with these sorts of progressive sounds. I also hope Gowan does more then two songs....with Glen gone, that will probably happen.

YES, YES, AND AGAIN, YES. Todd positively SMOKES on this one.

I like how Tommy switches the phrasing up a little in the bridge and chorus, and just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this song as a whole. Probably my favorite on the cd. I can't help but MOVE when it's on. It's damn near perfect.

Track 9-Manic Depression-Didn't like the original, this song makes it 2 for 2. For me, the first stumble on the album. Gonna hit the skip button with this one. I know some people rave this one, but it ain't my cup o' joe.

I loved WATCHING them play this live, but I'm just not a Hendrix fan...too monotonous. Must skip this song most times.

Alright, my turn! 8)

Walrus -- Never really cared for The Beatles but Gowan nails it. I've always maintained the belief that his voice is a mixture of George Harrison, DDY, Freddie Mercury, and Roger Taylor (the latter for pure grit) and it fits perfectly here. Good track, Good job, I just don't like The Beatles.

It Don't Make Sense -- Blues or rock, JY can deliver and deliver he does on this bad boy. His best track on the whole CD.

I Don't Need No Doctor - Once again, another passionate singing job by Gowan who just belts this sucker out from the very pit of soul as if Freddie Mercury's spirit dropped by and grabbed him by the sack (no pun intended). This is stuff this man is meant to sing. Awesome!

Can't Find My Home -- House of Lords done the best cover of this song and I was expecting this to top it. It's more true to the original which makes me cringe a bit because I think Tommy should have sang it in his Tommy voice instead of trying to sound Steve Winwood. Acceptable version though.

Locomotive Breath -- One of my favorite Tull tunes that I myself often do if I hit a Karoke bar. Great tune and JY ruins it. His voice just doesn't cut it for me for this tune. If this song is going to be covered -- THRASH IT!! Shove it down Lars Ulrich's windpipe, for cryin' out loud. A cover-band I was involved one once did this song for fun just pissing around. We destroyed it -- deep crunchy ass chords, trunk-rattling bass, and lots of double-kick drumming. Vocals? I was getting ready to sing it with a middle-range voice like the original when Mike - one of the axemen - steps up to the mic and barks, "IN THE SHUFFLING MADNESSSSSS" in a Chuck Billy grindcore growl that just made my day. We didn't record it ... nor could we finish it. Mike growling the lyrics made us crack up too much. :)

A Salty Dog -- Absolutely worth every single red cent of this CD. Gowan just does an immaculate job on this and I'm starting to prefer it over the Procol Harem version. Dare I say that Gowan is the MVP for Styx on this CD?!? Yes I do.

One Way Out -- Tommy does a great job with the singing but someone should serious consider restraining Todd. There's got to be a law somewhere about arachnids behind the drumkit. I'm sure of it. If not, make one. Todd is just the man on this tune and he proves that he is -- barnone -- the best drummer out there in music today. Period. Neither Neil Peart, Roger Taylor, Lars Ulrich, John Tempesta, Alan White, NOBODY can stack up to Todd. He's a drummer ahead of his time.

Summer In The City -- Meh. Boost the guitars. Add Tommy's voice. On par with the original.

Talkin' About The Good Times -- Great harmonies here. Tommy and Gowan hits a homerun here. Very well done.

Find The Cost Of Freedom -- Another good harmony job. True to the original.

Manic Depression -- Why, JY, WHY?!?!? If he wanted to cover Jimi Hendrix and still sound decent with the vocals, the best song for him to choose would have been "Voodoo Chile" since it's more of a blues tune. Right up his alley. Todd does an excellent job on the skins, though, and it's the only reason I listen to it. Other than that, I'll stick with the original Hendrix version.

I Can See For Miles -- Don't care for The Who. Never did. But the band does an awesome job on this song. Harmonies are titght and spot on and if Keith were still around, he'd take one look at Todd performing this song and gasp, "Oh, bloody hell..."

Blue Collar Man @ 2120 -- If they would've shaved about 30-45 seconds off near the end, it would been an absolute masterpeice. As it stands, it gets rather monotonous. Another small gripe is Koko only says the same damn things over and over. They should've worked with him more with the song so that he knew the lyrics then they should've given him a full verse to sing. Having him say, "Yeah" and "Do The Best I Can" here and there just seems too contrived and forced. Good thing the music and Tommy's delivery is steeped in good solid blues and that alone makes this tune passable. If you add it to an Ipod, consider ripping the WAV, chopping the monotony out of the end, and then re-encode into MP3. :)

Overall -- I'd rather have a Styx CD with all original material as a follow-up to Cyclorama but Styx also deserves attention that radio won't give them and Big Bang Theory could very well be the CD that'll catapult a forthcoming all-original CD into the stratosphere. For that, Big Bang Theory will just have to tide me over and -- unexpectedly -- it does that job well. Still, I want to see a true follow-up to Cyclorama later this Winter or next Spring for I doubt Big Bang will tide me over any longer than that.

Those who believe how this album came to be, are happy to get something from them to at least tide us over til the next album. The interesting part of this album is the songs they chose, not the typical songs you would think of for a covers album.

I was familiar with about half of them before the album came out and was really surprised at the chemistry you can hear these guys play with. Todd is simply an animal and it is amazing how diverse his playing styles are. From playing with Styx to Brian Wilson to Josh Cole, he simply has it. And playing "miles" in one take is simply amazing.

I think we all would rather have the new material cd, but if they are gonna put 2-3 years between a new material cd and give this to us as a teaser between new material albums, I'm ok with that. As long as the new material cd's keep coming and this isn't all they do.

I've heard it from several places that this may be leaning in Styx returning to a hard rock band and bringing the harder edgier stuff they used to play.

I've only listened to it a couple of times, so I don't have any real specific thoughts to share yet.

I agree. It's not something I would look for on a regular basis (once is fine, for that matter), but it's a nice change of pace and a chance to enjoy a diverse group of classic rock songs. In my case, they might as well be new, because I hardly know any of them. Of the two I do (I Can See For Miles and Locomotive Breath), I already greatly prefer the Styx versions. To be fair, I've heard very little by Jethro Tull or The Who that I like, so that's not saying much.

Besides, a covers album beats the heck out of the repetitive compilations.
