Our Memories Of Yesterday

Postby froy » Mon May 16, 2005 3:22 pm

Will last a lifetime
We'll take the best, forget the rest and someday we'll find
These are the best of times

Dennis DeYoung 1981

No matter what anyone say's you can't argue with those words.

Its time for Dennis to return to STYX case closed, :)

I think if you quoted those lyrics to the current members of Styx they would probably in unison sing the chorus to "Kiss Your Ass Goodbye" back at ya..........I think most people would like to see it happening but there is no way its gonna happen in my opinion.

Darren, who would they be singing to? Dennis DeYoung? Or the legions of fans who don't go to see their shows.

Opinions of the current line up aside, Styx isn't drawing what it was - and they're touring as much today as they did in the late 70s and early 80s.

True, but then again, who amongst their peers is ? The world of Rock music has changed......because their core demographic (us) are all grown up....with Children, Mortgages, Work demands, etc.

You could also argue that Styx today IS drawing nearly as many fans as back then, but they've had to stay on the road constantly to do it, and play a higher quantity of shows.

Oh, and Froy.....for me, THESE are the Best of Times......but 1981 wasnt bad either.

I see what you're saying - but Styx put out a new record every year for about 5 years and had to tour for each one. I doubt very much they're playing more shows today than they did back in "the day".

I'm also curious - do you think Dennis not being there plays ANY part in their attendance issue? I'm also curious to know how you can say they're drawing as many fans as they did when they were selling multi-platinum records. Back in the early 80s, they were playing stadiums. Today they're playing fairs and casinos (not a critisism, just point out the facts). You'd have to play a lot of casinos to equal the attendance of one stadium dontcha think?

Not being a jerk or anything... just curious.

Actually, STYX is playing quite a few more shows now than the did back in "the day". That was one of their criticisms of Dennis, that he didn't like to tour. They rarely played more that 60 dates a year back in "the day". They have been touring nearly nonstop since 1999.

There was a short time ago that I really wanted this to happen, but not anymore. I'm happy with Dennis on his own now and I'm looking forward to his new cd later this year. I'm also looking forward to bringing the whole family and friends to seeing Dennis this July :)

I couldn't watch how uncomfortable it would be on stage with JY and Dennis. Especially knowing how bitter JY is and the things that he has said in public.

The only thing I can see in the future is a possible DeYoung/Shaw cd in late 2006. Never Say Never...............................

So this is how you want the Styx legacy to end ?
Dennis starts the band and Gowan finishes it
Forget it
I know what you all are saying but to use the excuse of JY said this so its not a good idea
Or Im happy where Dennis is at so forget it
Think of Dennis on this one and not anything else
Im sure he would be a very happy man if he was able to be in his own band again
Shaw and JY have proven there points so now its time to fix the STYX legacy that they have destroyed .
Im sure things would be very different if Dennis returned
I also would want Panazzo to come back and Rickie Phillips out

Not a chance Froy. I believe very little good would come from a reunion. And I am thinking of Dennis. That you disagree is your prerogative.

So goodbye to Roseland
How I wish I could stay
To live in the memory
Of your sweet sweet day
But every road that we travel, has an end
And so the time now has come to say
Farewell old friend

It isn't an excuse. Somethings which are broken should not be repaired.

Froy,

I know why you want what you want, but it's just not feasible. The only way you could get it, would be a one time concert so that Chuck could play. Aside from that, it ain't happening. Would that be enough to end it on a positive note?

The only closure would be a reunion at the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame and that's not going to happen as long as Jan Wenner is part of the nomination committee.

Still - I maintain they play to nowhere near as many people a year today than they did in the 70s.

I too would like Dennis back in the band. But....... I would KEEP Gowan, and give Ricky his walking papers if Dennis or Lawerence could play guitar.

Who is Jan Wenner and why is this person so anti Styx??????

If I'm not mistaken Jan (Jann) Wenner is currently an Editor and Publisher for Rolling Stone. (He is also Publisher of US and Men's Journal). He was one of the founder's of RS and in the early 1970's he was a free lance writer for RS. He's also co-founder and Vice-Chairman of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.

One of the members of Styx in the 1970's pissed off Jann Wenner and he stills holds the grudge against the band. By the way, it wasn't Dennis!!!!!

You can write to Jann Wenner to find out his side of the story!!!! If I can find an article or letter, I'll post it.

Oh, I should add, right now this is MY opinion (until I can post a link or letter), but I did hear it from sources on both "sides" of the band. Same story all around.

Thats correct
The fans they play for today I would say never even saw the classic lineup . So today's Styx say's to hell with our long time fans
We are happy with the Bra and Panties show from our 17 year old fans

Only if you're an apologist for the current line-up.

Touring with other big name bands isn't the same as touring on your own.

Hate to break it to ya.

Newsflash: Ricky is the bassist.

They should keep Gowan around though... someone needs to make the coffee.

I don't understand how any aged women and I guess some men (LOL) could waste their money on bras and panties and throw them on the stage to some old guys? Lingerie is very expensive, unless they're throwing some old lingerie up there - ewwwww. They end up throwing all that stuff away anyway or maybe the road crew takes it for some odd reason. Hopefully someone knows what they actually do with that stuff - LOL

Wouldn't it be interesting to have statistical/factual data regarding the number of fans STYX has played for, by year ???

I wonder if the current incarnation has information of this ilk for their era ?
There would be no benefit in making it public, unless the figures were very flattering.

Wow, I seldom find myself on this side of the fence in disagreements on this bulletin board.....but, truth is, I havent a factual clue in this one....just conjecture.

Good luck finding the information from year to year.

A couple years ago I was working on a Documentary project of the band Styx (long story). It's hard to find all the dates and cities they played in. It's like a huge puzzle and I'm still trying to put together the pieces. It's a fun hobby :)

The current managers of all parties have some of the information on attendance. I'm not sure on what the former managers have. I'm pretty sure the members of the band just have bits and pieces of the information too.

D cup? Ouch. All I can think of is having back pain.

They actually throw the stuff in a trunk and it's stored somewhere. I'm sure after time it's donated to some charity or something. There is a funny picture of Glen in Larry in a truck full of the stuff. I'm sure Zan has the picture somewhere
