New Carrot Styx videos

Postby SuiteMadameBlue » Wed May 18, 2005 12:50 am

I guess these will be new for those who haven't seen them.

Todd updated his site and it features new videos from the Carrot Styx line up. Don't know if you all seen these:

http://www.toddsucherman.com/video.htm

I think they're all working now (the sites being updated), it takes a while to download.

WARNING: Bugsy, stay clear of "Lady"

Gotta Love Gowan pranching around during Lady like he had anything to do with the song.
I guess he loves copying Dennis
When he signs an autograph does he sign Dennis DeYoung also?
Takes allot of balls to do what that guy does,

Good question here.....

Lady is (as it were) one of Styx more "obscure" songs... at least in terms of the "hits". Meaning that songs like Come Sail Away, Renegade, etc are far more "recognizable"

I wonder if Styx will drop this song from their set? I don't think they'll ever be able to drop CSA.... but I could see them dropping Lady.

More than my reaction... I can only imagine how Dennis would feel to see this guy singing "his" song. If it were me, it would drive me out of my mind. I'm beginning to think that Styx should take the PR hit and stop playing Dennis' songs. They will live on in live performances through DDY.

Oh my God... "Lady" is an embarrassment.

The "Criminal Mind" one is just as bad... watch Glen ... he thinks he's in Metallica or something.

Hilarious.

Oh I don't agree with this at all. This is a VERY recognizable song. And it is the song that brought so many people to Styx. I remember the first time I heard it, I didn't believe harmonies like that were possible.

That said, I wish they would take this out of the current concert. Gowan murders it and it is such a personal DDY song to begin with. But it was their first hit..... even though only one of these guys singing it now had something to do with it when it was a hit.

Perhaps - but there would be riots if Styx did not play Come Sail Away. If they replaced Lady with something else I doubt few would notice. Not that it's not a "GREEAT SONG" because it is... I just wonder what people would rather hear.... Lady or a Tommy Shaw Ballad Classic for the ages like "Just Get Through This Night". Tommy Shaw didn't have a good ballad until High Enough with Damn Yankees.

You are probably right there, Ash. I would hope no one would riot for the same reason I would be happy -- one more DDY song removed from ruination by Gowan's voice.

eh... it's OK.... but it's not all that great... it's a slow song, but I don't know if it qualifies as a ballad.

Of course it's a ballad.

And it's a GREAT song but I'm not sure Gowan doing the harmonies would do it justice so it's better left alone.

I think you people are letting your imagination run wild over Lady because I had to turn the volume up almost full blast to hear it only to be vastly disappointed. Why? I only hear Tommy and Todd. Can't hear JY, can't hear Ricky, and most importantly of all, I can't hear Gowan! How the hell can one honestly make a judgement on his performence when it can't be heard (shut up, Froy) to begin with?

What I did manage to hear sounded fine and in key but that's the problem with bootleg/amatuer videos of concerts -- unless an audio cable piped directly into the mixing board is hooked into the camera, you're not hearing the band; you're hearing the accoustics of the venue courtesy of the cheap-ass condenser mic built in the camera itself. The people in attendence will be able to judge the quality of that performance better than anyone viewing that video because they get to hear it all and loudly. This video sounds like I'm attending a Styx concert, long-distance, over a telephone. That's no way to judge or enjoy Styx (or any band, for that matter).

You must be deaf too many Eddie Arnold albums
I hear Gowan perfectly
He's yelling and his antics during the song make me sick

Funny how the NBC thing we blame the sound board now be blame it not being on the sound board, Dude I just picked up the STYX Anthology and I have been listening to a band that was on fire
Every song is produced perfectly and the harnonies are spot on
Im sorry this current lineup can't and never will hold a candle to the classic lineup .
If you want to hear good STYX music believe me join the Fans for Classic Styx brigade and lets get Dennis back where he belongs.

That's not my kind of music. My old man and I got into heated arguments over music because he believed his stuff was "music" and my music was "noise". The only nicest thing he ever said about Styx was, "Why in the hell would Tommy and DDY waste their singing talents with this noisy assed garbage?" Hell, Queen was "noise" to him until "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" made him think it was an unreleased Elvis song.

True. Of the bands that I have seen, the live albums pale in comparison to the actual performance. There's just something about the atmosphere of a show that just can't be recreated on a recording. Having said that, I REALLY enjoy the Springsteen DVD Live in Madison Square Garden. However, I should be quick to point out I've never been to a Springsteen concert and have no basis for comparison. The Goo Goo Dolls Live in Buffalo CD/DVD is probably my favorite of bands that I've actually seen.

Very sad.

Yes, froy, I'm sure you're quite broken up. :(

I sure wouldn't. This has never been one of my favorites, and I tend to appreciate it because of its place in Styx history, more than anything else.

Live concerts on DVD or video...to me they give the viewer a chance to armchair quarterback...so to speak. No where near the same as being there in person.

That's not to say they aren't enjoyable. Many are. Just that I think they shouldn't be judged as actually being at the show.

Lady...it should stay. It is a true piece of Styx history...regardless of which singer the band has singing it. Some renditions hold up better than others of course

I think "Lady" should be taken out of the current Carrot Styx concerts. If I'm not mistaken, this song was written for Suzanne too. It's pretty personal.

In "my" opinion, Gowan sings it TERRIBLE. I've seen/heard Gowan sing it live 3 times. It was aweful each time, I was so "lucky" to be first row right in front of Gowan 2 times and "in the pit" the 3rd time filming. ACK, ACK and ACK!!!

I don't want to hear anyone else sing "Lady", just Dennis.

Here's a recent set list from a Carrot Styx concert. I see that they added 5 songs from the wonderful BBT cd. Rock on (LOL) 8)

Blue Collar Man
Grand Illusion
Lorelei
Lady
Summer In The City
Snowblind
Too Much Time On My Hands
I am The Walrus
Manic Depression
Crystal Ball
Foolin' Yourself
Miss America
Come Sail Away
encore:
Locomotive Breath
I Don't Need No Doctor
Renegade

I like that set list. Manic Depression would be my for sure bathroom break. I cant stand any version of that song!
Did they drop Todds short snipits of album cuts??
Tommy wrote that they are rehearsing Boat On The River for the European leg of their tour.
No more One with Everything???, they ought to ditch Miss America and replace it with either These Are The Times, Heavy Water, Half penny/Two Penny or Midnight Ride.
How long are they playing for??

Yogi,

This is a set list from Myrtle Beach, the medley was cut at this concert. I didn't see a post on the length of the this show.

Yes, they will be playing "Boat on a River" over seas.

I don't think a lot of the fans attending the shows recognize any songs from Cyclo........ LOL, just the diehards.

I plan on posting the setlist from the Speedstreet concert. The show should be a shorter one, so the songs they really want to highlight should be played. My guess-Walrus, Summer in the City, Locomotive Breath and Doctor.
