LITTLE LUCY SINGS THE BLUES?????

Postby yogi » Thu May 26, 2005 4:26 am

Because of Dennis and JY bringing Glen Burtnik into the band in 1991 I will ALWAYS respect them as much for being able to spot talent as the talent each one of them bring to the table.

If I was was a betting man, I would bet if it wasnt for the decision to bring Glen in as Tommy's replacement to this day I would of NEVER heard of Glen Burtnik.

I would say at this point in time he is my favorite artist.

If you log on to Glens website(glenburtnik.com) then go to the Dear Glen section and look at the May 25th post about the Edge album he has some interesting points as does the person asking him the questions does.

One response he states is that he felt that he NEVER belonged in Styx. He says NOTHING negative about Dennis.

All must not be that great with Tommy at the helm?????????

What I find funny (actually odd) is a 30+ year old driving down the street cranking Mr. Roboto??

How in the hell was band camp??????

Shit, when you drove off I bet those 25 year olds were wondering how long it was going to take you to get to nerdville.

Were you driving with or without you're roboto mask on??

Finally, does the roboto mask clash with the hammer pants?????

I have NEVER figured out how to cut and paste sorry!

P.S. Froy, A Yugo is not an SUV!! Go to glenburtnik.com then click on the message board this will take you to the Dear glen section. It is the May 25th question. Cut & paste it here it is real interesting!

Since he left the band, he has toned down his animosity towards Dennis. I've seen a few responses like this on his site. Very pragmatic. That being said, let's put it into historical perspective. When he rejoined the band, they were in the middle of some very rough (to put it mildly) business. It's very easy to get caught up in that...which he did. Now he has the opportunity to look back at some of his previous comments and decide whether or not he should have made them in the first place. Hindsight is usually 20/20.

I will probably never hold him in the same regard as you Yogi, but I wish him success...as he defines it. I think, for him, he is happier now.

As for whether or not Tommy (or more realistically JY) is better at the helm...who knows. Different animal.

Peace

To find the message on Glen's site, you have to go to the message board. There is a section called "dear glen". The message is there.

I can't take anyone seriously who sites Glen Burnik as their favorite artist.

By the way, get back to me when Burtnik writes a better song then "Mr. Roboto".

"Love Is The Ritual" just don't cut it.

The Liar's Club! One of THE best songs EVER written. Ever.

If you're talking "hits," however, how about "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough," which went to number for 7 weeks?

Glen has written soooooo many better songs than ROBOTO (who hasn't, really?)! LOL

It's the first question under Dear Glen...but here ya go. No big deal.

Glen -

Just want to say how much I love your work. One of my favorite songs by you is "Hole In My Pocket" off that elusive "Heroes and Zeroes" album. (By the way, I bet you have some copies sitting in your house somewhere - care to auction them off?!?) Anyway, I loved the Edge album and I remember I was in college when it came out. I remember before the album was even out in stores, the DJ on the radio station saying "You've waited 7 years...now hear it is the first single off the new Styx album" and then he played "Love Is The Ritual"!! I went crazy! At first I thought he had put the wrong song on or something because it sounded so modern and different from what Styx had been. But that song really rocked! It was awesome. And I think it went all the way to like #9 on the Rock Charts. So these people (including you I might add!) that say it wasn't a big hit are just plain wrong. It got as high as Rockin In Paradise on the rock chart and people think that it is a big Styx classic. So, I don't understand why LITR doesn't get more play. One of the most underrated and underappreciated Styx songs.

OK here is my question(s). Sorry to ramble. I never understood why A&M didn't release more singles of Edge. You had LITR (#9 rock), Show Me The Way (huge hit #3 pop), Love At First Sight (respectable showing at #25 pop) - you all were touring and on a roll! I was really expecting the next single to be the title track or All In A Day's Work or World Tonite. So, the questions are -
1. Why wasn't anything else released?
2. What was going to be the next single release off Edge?
3. Who makes the decision(s) on which songs to release (on any album Edge or Cyclorama - I think KYAG should have been the first single off Cyclo, but don't get me started on that one)?
4. If Love At First Sight was a single, why didn't you all play it in concert (at least you didn't at my show)? Wouldn't you want to plug your new single in concert?
5. This is just my opinion, but if I WERE THE MUSIC exec, this is what I would have done - released LITR, SMTW, LAFS, Edge of Century, All In A Day's Work, and World Tonite - I think that there are 6 legitimate singles off Edge. Homewrecker did not sound like a single, Not Dead Yet was not an original, Carrie Ann was too slow, and Back to Chicago too Broadway. But everything else should have been a big hit. I am peeved that more singles weren't released. It could have changed everything. More singles would have equaled more sales and then you all might have wanted to capitalize on that and the record company would have probably given you whatever you wanted!!

Anyway, I just had to vent. I LOVE your music and can't wait to hear something new.

Annie

Dear Annie,

Thanks very much. I'm glad you enjoy my music. "Hole In My Pocket" is an oldie, written with my wildly talented friend Bob Miller. Nobody ever mentions that one to me, and I used to really like it. I still do.

"Love Is The Ritual" was a tune I had ready for my 3rd solo album on A&M before the deal went sour (one of my managers physically threatened a label Executive and that was that). Soon after, Styx came along and asked for material and the song became their first single off the Edge album. Those are interesting chart statistics you've brought to my attention. I guess I always was annoyed that my stints with Styx amounted to what they were. I ultimately felt like Dennis' voice was the sound radio was interested in playing, so there was essentially little I could do to effect the band…but I DID write a good portion of “Love At First Sight”, so I guess I took the writer role back then. Since I got a bit of a cold shoulder from earlier Styx fans, I pretty much wrote off the entire exercise.

To answer your questions:
1. No other singles were released off the Edge Of The Century album because it got to be time for Styx to renegotiate with A&M records after the 3rd single. Simply put, the band asked for more than A&M thought they were worth so A&M pulled out, Styx went fishing for another record deal, and A&M felt they had little to gain by investing in any more music off that album. It's all about business.
2. The next single release off of Edge? Good question. It was so long ago, I haven't a clue. I will say this” in this day and age, whenever an album has more than a few singles, either someone's not paying attention or the earlier singles were monster hits. It's rare an album gets up to bat more than 2 or 3 times.
3. The decision on which song gets to be chosen to be the single varies. Most often it's a consensus between the artist and the label's staff. For better or for worse, I've never had any say in the career of Styx, and I'm sorta cool with that.
4. As I recall, 'Love At First Sight' was rarely performed live because either the timing was off, or Dennis didn't think it sounded good or something. Again, I had little say in Styx decisions.
5. Boy, you really must've liked Edge of Century, you would've released half the album as singles!

That was all quite a long time ago. I tend to regard that album as a bit spotty, with a few high points. The first time I heard 'Show Me The Way' (Dennis asked me to harmonize the chorus of it with he & JY) I knew it was a strong song. My only regret is that my contributions didn't leave more of a dent - it would've changed things considerable I think. But it is what it is and I accept all of it. I don't think I ever necessarily belonged in that band to be honest.

Glen

PS I'm down to too few copies of "Heroes and Zeroes" to be able to even leave each of my children copies after I've kicked the bucket!

I HATE Stairway to Heaven and especially Freebird. Hey Jude is a GREAT song, and by "classic" standards, it's probably a better song, but I prefer Liar's Club. It's just got all the elements of a perfect song, for me.

I like Mr. Roboto... and I like Glenn. I think Glenn is a better songwriter than Tommy.... and I'd rather have heard Glen's voice on "I Am The Walrus" (sorry if I type it Glenn.... I'm a member of the Glenn Beck Insiders web site too... so it's just a habbit).

Glen has a lot of awesome songs. I recently ripped my Heroes and Zeroes CD and sold it on eBay.. didn't get too much for it which kinda surprised me, but at least it's not clogging up space in my closet. (and yes, I sold my kilroy record after ripping it also - I'm just not into CD's anymore).

I find Glen to be a fairly intellectually honest person even if at times I wish he would think before he spoke. I have no doubt that he believes what he is saying at the time he is saying it. He may reflect back at some point as he has done on occasion... I do know that he is VERY grateful to the DDY lead Styx for paying off his old manager so that he was free to write music for someone else. Without that we may never have heard Sometimes Love Ain't Enough or any number of other songs... Palookaville... Hollywood... both of which I have yet to buy.

I respect Glen... even though I don't always agree with things he says. THat puts him on par with every other person I've known on this planet.... including Dennis DeYoung.

When Glen wrote " I don't think I ever necessarily belonged in that band to be honest." was he referring to the EOC Styx or the Cyclorama Styx?

I think he meant EOC Styx otherwise he would have never came back to the band.

Glen Burtnik isn't even significant enough for his fans to be laughed at...

I'm sure if you go out on the street and ask 500 random people who he is... I'd be surprised if ONE person even remotely had a clue.

And to reiterate, I can't possibly take your musical opinion the least bit serious if Burtnik is your favorite artist of all time.

Yogi, I bet you're just bitter at Dennis because you got beat up in school for liking Mr. Roboto and now you harbor a grudge.

Grow a spine.

Of course he would... he needed a paycheck and he probably thought things would be different.

And then Tommy shit all over him.

I took it to mean both times. In each case he had different expectations for his role than what he actually got. In both cases, he worked it out as best he could.

He could very easily go back to the band after his first tour of duty. Different team leaders, different role in the band. He just discovered that each time it wasn't what he wanted it to be. And now he has moved on.

Just my interpretation.

For lack of anything better to post, I'll just comment on several of the songs mentioned on this thread.

Stairway To Heaven - Every all-time rock countdown in the 80's I ever heard had this as #1. Me? I was tired of hearing it after the first verse. Never did latch on to this one.

Free Bird - Seems like everytime I ever sat around drinking beer with my buddies and listening to music, someone had to throw this one the cassette player. To this day, I crave a beer everytime I hear it.

Hey Jude - As I said on another thread, never heard a bad Beatles song yet, and this one didn't make me reconsider that even for a second. Great song.

Love At First Sight - One of my personal favorites from the Styx catalog. After hearing it, I thought DDY should start co-writing all ballads with Glen.

Love Is The Ritual - Much better than Roboto and much better live than on EOTC. And IML, I feel this way even though Glen is far from my favorite artist :P

Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough - Hate to admit it, but I like it

I can't wait for the movie "The Perfect Man" and see Dennis perform "Mr. Roboto"

"Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" is a pretty darn good song. I like it :)

Useless information:

"Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" - Released Oct. 1992. The hit duet with Don Henley. #1 on Billboard AC charts, 10/11/92. #2 on Billboard Pop charts. Nominated for a Grammy, Best Adult Contemporary, 1993.

Sadie, I think you got that exactly right.

I think Burnik is a talented guy, no question. I am sure he feels his talents were somewhat submerged both times he was in Styx. I do think Dennis gave him more of an opportunity to shine, though, in EOTC Styx as opposted to his role in Carrot Styx.

"Love Is The Ritual" does nothing for me... it doesn't sound like Styx and when I first heard it I knew "something" was wrong.

It should be a Kenny Logins song.

Adam: Neither does "Music Time" or much of "Mr Roboto". So what?
