Children's Miracle Network Show

Postby styxfanNH » Mon Jun 13, 2005 1:14 am

I just got a dvd of the CMN show and have really only had a chance to have it playing while I was doing some other work.

Just a couple of points. (and lets keep this one civil please)

1. At a given point, Dennis is wearing those almost black "sunglasses"

2. It really was as much a promotional appearance for BNW as it was coming out in a few weeks.

3. Glen was already playing Bass with them.

4. I have no idea how all of them could have appeared on the stage at the same time given the circumstances of what we now know about the status of that lineup.

I felt bad for Glen on the first couple of songs, he was in the back and kind of in the dark. I was glad to see him later in the show out more in front

4. I have no idea how all of them could have appeared on the stage at the same time given the circumstances of what we now know about the status of that lineup.

I have no idea either how they did it. The first time I saw it, I never would've guessed that they were no longer together.

Did you catch the interaction with Dennis and JY and then Dennis and Tommy? I'm noticing more "little" things when I watch it over and over.

Too Much Time(Tommy changes buying line to Marie Osmond, but appears to have forgotten that he was going to change it cuz it sounds like he begins to sing JY but then changes it)

Dennis Comments, "Boy aren't these guys good"

Lady

JY introduces the band

Tommy comments that JY had brought them together for CMN

Fooling Yourself (Dennis wears blk glasses)

Babe (Dennis has taken off the glasses)

Blue Collar Man

Best of Times

Renegade

JY takes an unusual jaunt into the crowd. Only time I have ever seen him actually go into the audience.

Come Sail Away

Interview (Total Lies)

interviewer: So what is it like for you all to still have the magic

Dennis: I got such a pain right here (points to ass)

Interviewer: it's called getting older.

Dennis: I think what it is that when you get a certain group of guys together some magic happens and the parts are not replacable and I think that is what we have here and it's just very special.

interviewer: And being back together, how special is that?

Dennis: oh, about a dollar seventy five....

Interviewer: I know you guys have some new fans out there and we have a new cd called, Brave New World that you can get when?

Tommy: later this month on June 29th. its our first cd since 1983 together

Interviewer: So what can your fans expect?

Tommy: Well this cd, you know Styx has a really deep well of music and songs that we have written to draw from so we really kinda pulled in from the past and all new songs that if you've been a Styx fan for years, you'll recognize the styles from years ago, but its still new at the same time.

----------------
Not speaking for Suite in regards to the interaction, but to me it is like there are just 5 guys on stage. The joking and interaction they usually have with each other was missing. There seemed to be more interaction between JY and Glen than anyone else. Tommy and Jy appear to be staying away from DDY at all costs other than at the closing interview.

Shots of Dennis appear from today's perspective that he is a little reflective knowing the cicumstances. Dennis to me appeared to get a little choked up during Best of Times especially during the worst of times stanza.

We talked about this on the thread before (obviously no one ever reads my posts - LOL) . Here are my comments from May 7th

I'm watching a tape from the Children's Miracle Network that was aired June 6, 1999. These are just a few observations while I'm watching

The band is Styx, it's members on this stage at this time is Dennis, Tommy, JY, Glen and Todd.

The first song is "Rockin' The Paradise", Dennis is out in front, no keyboards used on this song. Very sad (to me) to see Dennis, JY and Tommy all sharing the microphone at the same time singing together. At this time I had no clue that Dennis was kicked out.

Next song is "Too Much Time On My Hands", Dennis is at keyboards, song starts, Tommy walks over to Dennis, Dennis nods at Tommy, Tommy points and smiles. During this song when they do the "hey, hey, hey", JY looks over at Dennis and they do it together. Funny part, Tommy sings "as long as Marie Osmond is buying". Another sad observation, Glen has been playing way in the back by Todd, can't even see him.

After this song, the audience is clapping and Dennis yells, "boy, these guys are good, get outta here" jokingly.

Now "Lady" is playing, Dennis is at his white piano. (Yes, peeps, the tears are coming down). Fricken' GREAT song!!!!!!!!!! I miss THIS Styx playing it!!!!!!!!!!

JY is introducing the band now. Poor Glen still in back, at least they put the light on him.

Next song "Foolin' Yourself". Tommy plays his guitar to Dennis at the beginning of the song, they smile again.

"Blue Collar Man"

"The Best of Times"

"Renegade" During a little bit in this song, JY is playing the guitar right by Dennis, like old buddies.

"Come Sail Away" - IF ANYONE HAS THIS COPY, PLEASE WATCH DENNIS' EYE CONTACT DURING THIS SONG AS HE'S SINGING THE BEGINNING!!

WOW!! I have no idea how Dennis performed knowing that the music group he co-founded has already kicked him out of the band. The way they interacted on stage and the interview after. They're talking about how it is being back together and great it is. Talking about Brave New World and how the "chicks dig the drummer", interview with Todd. I still don't know how he did it, no clue.

This is from StyxCollector regarding the CMN.

Quote:
AH: Knowing all that, how difficult was it to play the CMN [Children's Miracle Network] gig back in June?
DDY: Well ... it was not easy, but I had made that commitment before all this stuff happened. And as a man of his word, when I say I'll do something ... I could have backed out of that - easily! It was months between when this happened in March, and June. I could have easily said, "No, I'm not going to do it." But I had given my word not only to the band, but also to the Children's Miracle Network, and it was unfair in any way, shape, or form to back out of that. I mean, it's a great cause and an important thing to do, so I did it.

ok Suite, you got one more song on your copy than i do on mine.

I haven't watched it enough yet to see the subtlties that you have. and i stopped transcribing the interview after Tommy's stuff.

I agree with you on Glen too.

Still don't know if I could have put on a show like that regardless of the member.

They did look more disconnected than they usually did. Almost like no one knew what to say or do based on the situation.

my copy is pretty good for coming from tv almost 6 years ago and being lifted from a vhs tape. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would say it is probably about an 8.5.

But as Suite now says, it appears I am missing a song. If someone has a good copy of Rockin the Paradise either on vhs or dvd, I could splice them together and have a complete copy.

Also my copy has some acoustic Tommy/Gowan on the end. Dor some this may be sacriligious.

I have VHS copy of the show.

2 things I noticed about DDY:

His keyboard solo in Fooling Yourself. He was trying his balls off!!!! Look at the determination on his face! Look at JY and Glen catch a look at each other in the middle of it. Nodding in appreciation. And a momentary look at eachother with a sort of 'yeah, this guys good' thing going on

And after he sings the opening line in Come Sail Away, watch him sigh. Poor bloke (even if he had become this 'control freak') I did think of all his years with the band and how in that moment he knew it was all over.

Tommy later commented in an interview it was "the best he'd ever seen Dennis perform the song"
Here in Styxworld life is good and everything is cool!!!!

I remember reading something from Todd where he said he was having equipment problems (he couldn't hear his band mates or his cues). He also mentioned that tension was "thick" for that performance.

I believe we see things now with hindsight with this appearance. For me, Dennis looks like he was out to prove he still had the chops/goods, as well as looking rather sad that it was all over.

I noticed Tommy sang his material straight forward, whereas Dennis had more "showmanship". Now before anyone takes that as a slam, I mean that it felt to me as though the men in general wanted to just get through with it os there was no relaxation on that stage. I think because Dennis most likely wanted to show he could still perform and be a part of the band, he put a lot of effort into it. I don't think Tommy felt the same self imposed pressure.

The performance is wonderful, poignant, and hard to watch all at the same time. You could see looks pass between the men that now perhaps we read more into. Or perhaps not.

I found it wonderful that Dennis and JY, Tommy, and company (no disrespect meant here either), were able to show genuine humor in the interview afterwards. As far as last performances go, this one went out well.

And "chicks dig the drummer"!

Peace
Sadie
