I saw Styx for the first time in Manchester last week since becoming a fan of the band in the mid 1980`s.
I am going to be totally impartial with my review without getting into the Gown/De Younf argument.
The set list was great...some have said boring and predictable...remember they haven`t played here for nearly a quarter of a century soanything that they played in the UK would be new...AND I wanted to hear the boring predictable clasices!!...give me Snowblind, Cruystal Ball and Miss America, renegade and Blue Collar man...this was the stuff that got me into Styx in the first place.
The band was tight and VERY rocky....not the marshmallow Styx that most people think.
The vocals were superb..simply the best 4 part harmonies I have heard live.....EVER!!!!
the band looked like they were having great fun.
Todd is an immense drummer....full of energy..Iv`e seen some great drummers...Peart, Portnot, Rockenfield, Paice etc...Todd relly impressed me in Manchester.
Tommy Shaw was superb and in fine voice.
Gowan was a great frontman...entertaining, charismatic and a great singer...remember he`s been around a a while...you may not like him replacing DDY but you can`t take away from the fact he was a top class performer. Also lets remeber that it has been said that Styx never played in the UK for so long 'cos DDY didn`t like it..........let`s be positive ....if DDY was still in Styx there`d be no Styx in the UK??? I`d rather have a DDYless Styx than no Styx.
The crowd was nowhere near 850...I was in the circle half way back and there were loads behind me...i`d say it was around 3/4 full which is not bad bearing in mind Styx were never popular over here and haven`t had a hit for years.
All in all a hi9gly enjoyable night coming in the same week as Kansas in London...what a week !!!
Now...how about Journey getting their fat arses over here for a few shows!!??
cheers
Mick
