Steelers set concert to kick off season

The Steelers are promoting an Aug. 22 concert at Heinz Field to help psych up their fans for the coming football season.

Classic rock bands Styx and Kansas will perform at the inaugural Kickoff Concert. Tickets go on sale July 22 and will be $45 and $35.

The concert will feature a new configuration that will locate the stage at the north end of the stadium. The north end of Heinz Field is the closed end of the stadium.

The concert starts at 7:30 that night with gates opening at 6.

Some commercial a couple of years ago did a spoof like that....the guy in the band yells out in the yells out.....Thank You Cleveland !!!! and the crowd goes silent....and a band mates whispers in his ear "This is Detroit...Cleveland was last night"

I have absolutely no idea what they were selling, but it sure was a funny commercial !

Styx played in Michigan recently. Muskegon was the town he goofed and called Saginaw. I'd chalk it up to being tired from the recent European tour and not much of a break in between. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more, simply because of the amount of touring they/other bands do.

Nothing to do with Styx, but we have a venue that is about 60 miles south of Boston in Mansfield Mass that is always referred to as Boston.

And Dennis' show that was in Beverly Mass was 30 miles north of Boston but promoted as Boston on Dennis' web site.

I think it's easier to promote shows as being in larger cities than say...Beverley. I mean no disrespect (and in that example it didn't work out too well), but more people are familiar with Boston than Beverley or Mansfield.

This must be a NFL initiative because the Patriots have Bon Jovi playing for their Rally. But I know Bon Jovi will sell the entire arena. Also they are going to be playing songs of of their new album that is slated to be released around that time.

I think some bands even go as far as to write down and post the city in various discreet areas of the stage, do they not?

I personally think that Carrot Styx is really running themselves down, seriously. Like them or not, that's a lot of concert dates for their ages. I heard that Tommy is really looking more and more weary at the recent concerts. He has so many projects going on he's going to burn himself out.

Are there any other "older" bands that have the same amount of tour dates?

No doubt about it, they tour a ton. But I think they are feeling the pressure of having to tour a new album with a new label that is putting a lot of money behind them.

I don't know about Tommy looking tired as much as he's looking older.

Some people just have to keep busy.

Looking at all the recent pictures, I think he actually looks pretty good for his age. To me, he does look very tired especially around the eyes and his smile seems to be disappearing more at concerts.

Obviously I'm not a musician, but since they (Carrot Styx) are on a never-ending tour, this must really wear them down. How are their fingers/hands from playing the guitars and drums concert after concert? I mean people in sports don't play all year round like these guys do. I know people in sports train on their off-season, but these guys travel city to city by bus and then play night after night. I get tired just watching concerts, I have no clue how any band can do this.

I remember; a black band was playing and he said, "thank you Cleveland," and of course it was Detroit.

REO Speedwagon, was the headliner, Foreigner, Joan Jett and I think Bad Company were the other acts. But it was 1982 before 90,000 fans at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, TN. Kevin said "Come on NAshville......" You ever hear 90,000 people boo someone? It was pretty. All Kevin could say, was "I take it we are not in NAshville anymore"-ERIC

Suite brings up a good point here. And it would apply to nearly ANY band tht tours incessantly. The wear and tear not just on the voice but the chording fingers for the guitar. I know you develop big callouses, but it STILL can hurt if you play night after night with few breaks.

No doubt about it, they tour a ton. But I think they are feeling the pressure of having to tour a new album with a new label that is putting a lot of money behind them.

NH brings up another point. The touring is incumbent upon them with the album to promote. And often I am sure the band may have no say in the matter. A sort of "get out there and PERFORM" from the promoters and record label people, weariness be damned.

I guess with the $$$ pouring in, it is hard to argue the point no matter how exhausted you are.

Purely conjecture here, but I think their time on stage is fueled by 100 peercent adreneline........endorphins, it's a natural, chemical high !

What's amazing to me is that they still feel the same rush after doing it 1,000's of times. As for Tommy looking tired at the end of the show, can't say that surprises me, those guys burn a TREMENDOUS amount of energy / calories out there every show. the endorphins wear off, and they've just had one hell of a workout.

I'm sure it's different for them in there 50's than it was 25 years ago....for one thing, they've given up the cocaine ( at least I hope so ! ) I'm betting in their daytime hours they sneak in a nap or 2, and that they sleep pretty soundly when they are asleep. I have to believe they eat well too. These would be questions someone should ask them in an interview !

Couple of points....

If you believe even half of what these guys say, they truly love doing what they do. And if you love what you do, it ain't really work....as the saying goes.

This past fall was originally scheduled to be time off to record a new material album, but the surprise success of Walrus pushed them into touring a bit longer and a shorter recording time that BBT took.

These guys generally go on stage about 9:00 or so and don't come off until 11:00. by the time they are done with after show commitments, they rarely hit the bus before 12:30 and I bet it is another hour or so before they could actually sleep.

Also during the winter months, it is usually wekend gigs so they have more time off then.

And Tommy, Ricky, and Todd are busy 24/7/365 with their other projects.

With all that said, I am sure if they felt fatigued at all, they would schedule time off.
