So At The End Of The Day....

Postby Ash » Tue Oct 18, 2005 7:07 am

Hey Folks;

Been a while since I started a thread here and I just wanted to offer up a few thoughts from my elusive mind.

I'm 34.... that means that guys who were in their 30's when I was grooving to their music in middle and high school are now pushing 60. After you get to a certain age... things just happen.

I used to tell joke to my friends when I was in my 20s (before I was married)... you know you're old when the girls coming out of high school don't even look at you anymore. They just assume you're like their parents or some authority figure. Hell a few days ago some asshole called me "sir" at a concert when he wanted to get by me.

Say what you will about the various lineups and what not... but I think that the glory days are gone and they're never coming back. Most kids (and I say most not all) don't want to watch a bunch of aging dinosaurs jump around and try to be 20 again. Call it maturity, but we expect our heros and idols of the music scene to some how grow, mature and give us entertainment we can relate to. I think this is why things are not going well in this music scene in general. Young kids don't want to watch a bunch of gray haired old men play songs their parents used to listen to, and the parents are turned off by all the drama and childish antics that these artists put on to try and relate to youth. Music has always been an activity of youth or those struggling to hold on to it... and youth just don't connect to a bunch of 60 year old dinosaurs no matter how talented or relevant they are or try to be.

So you can sit here and argue Dennis this and Tommy that... Lord knows I have for long enough ... but at the end of the day I don't think it matters if Jesus Christ was to come down and front Styx or Journey - people just aren't going to notice these art rock dinosaurs anymore to any large capacity.

Melodic Rock will continue to live on in acts that I consider Melodic Rock (although Andrew might disagree).... bands like Cold, Simple Plan, Korn, Disturbed, System of a Down, Papa Roach, Mudvayne, etc... all represent the modern melodic rock scene... some of these ont he lighter side... some on the heaver side. Most people consider these more alternative... but in actually it's all semantics. Acts like Cold have so much in common with the classic rock bands of the 70s... perhaps even more than they'd care to admit. But I digress...

So what should we do? Enjoy it while we have it... because we're not going to have it forever. I've got front row (literaly) seats to see Dennis in Nashville in early November... and it may be the last time I ever see him perform. I could be wrong, but all of these guys are on the downward side of not only their careers, but their lives as well.

I think it's time to kick back on the chair and enjoy what they've given us... because sooner or later it's going to be gone.. and all we'll have are the memories of what used to be.

34!!!!

You are just a KID!!

I think, at the end of the day, we all agree on the enjoyment of the music that was made by the subject of this board back in their salad days.

Some like the time a little before that (cruoton phase??) and some like what has come after (left over lettuce and salad dressing??). Ok, ok!!! Sorry!

We enjoyed, and still enjoy, the music, and there is nothing wrong with talking about it. Yes, maybe it is all in the past, for the most part, but there is nothing wrong with that either.

Ash,

I'm a year older than you. I was a dad at 21, so I've felt like an old fart for quite some time ALREADY! I first started feeling old when at about 25 or so, I realized I wasn't 'in' on all the current cool stuff. It's just a matter of maturing accepting more responsibility and changing your focus.

As for your observations, I can relate to practically all of it. Rock 'n' Roll is definitely for the young. End of story. All of the acts we grew up with are nostalgia acts now. When styx 6.0 came to charlotte, I went to go see them and posted that anyone on the fence should go see them, because the chances of seeing that type of show grower slimmer with each passing year.

As for the resident 'old farts' around here. I like 'em. Makes me feel a WHOLE lot younger  :D .

I had to chuckle at this, because people don't need Jesus to come down and front a band to ignore Him. They've been doing that for 2000+ years already!

Oh you are going to get it so big pal.

I got married 5 weeks after my 21st birthday. 19.5 years later here I am.

As for what we had played at our wedding...there was a Styx song played. And that's all I'm saying about it.

I will remember this. I'll get you...and your little dog too....(insert evil laugh here).

I hear ya. I worked up at the high school last year and some of the kids were calling me "mam", oh I hate that. They changed their tune when I started to wear my old concert shirts - LOL I know this is probably disrespectful, but most of the high school kids call me by my first name. I grew up calling adults "Mrs. or Mr.", I still address my parents friends that way to show respect. The Mrs. Suite (LOL) is my mother-in-law, not me - LOL My friends kids usually call me by my first name or they call me "Mike's Mom" - LOL I just don't want to grow old and feel old at the same time.

Say what you will about the various lineups and what not... but I think that the glory days are gone and they're never coming back. Most kids (and I say most not all) don't want to watch a bunch of aging dinosaurs jump around and try to be 20 again.

I'm still hoping that something will come around for Dennis, like a huge hit single or even a Grammy would be nice :) I know the glory days are gone, but when I close my eyes sometimes at a concert, I feel like I'm back in time with the vocals and music at some concerts.

So you can sit here and argue Dennis this and Tommy that...

LOL, Okay, I do enjoy that time to time

So what should we do? Enjoy it while we have it... because we're not going to have it forever.

You are SO right!! That's why I'm trying to see all the concerts I possibly can. Life is so short!!

Good post Ash :)

Ah Classic and Scott...you warm my heart!

Just so you know...popcorn is NOT low fattening....unless you eat totally plain, dull, boring uncoated, unseasoned popcorn.

Fortunately, our popcorn is much much better.

Come on...keep going. I like this.

will she be cranky ?
will she post frankly ?
When Sadie's sixty five. ( bum-bum ! )

Classic,

I appreciate your letting me duet with you. Fortunately there's no audio here. I can't speak for you, if you're anything like me, we'd make the average Karaoke singer sound great. Maybe even Gowan great! (I am the president of the LGFC in case you didn't know).

In wanting to repay the favor, I've got one we can trade lead vox on as well.

"I got a Sadie little mama
Lord, shes my heart and soul
I don't even have to tell ya
she makes them popcorn balls

well this popcorn lovin' mama
makin' popcorn balls all night
I don't even have to tell ya
she makes things seem butter right
all night"

Actually..I just couldn't be that mean. Well, okay I could.

You guys are great. After I slave all day making those popcorn balls (okay well I really don't make them)...what a great "treat" to read these.

What can you two do with

Lady Madonna
Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds
Twist and Shout (yes I know it's a cover tune...keeping that Styx tangent going)

And if you decide to record the karaoke bit, let me know. I can provide great background vocal...and perhaps even more popcorn balls!
