Falling In Between - Advance Thoughts

Postby Andrew » Sun Oct 30, 2005 7:02 am

My thoughts as posted from the other board!

More thoughts shortly!

I have had the great privilage of hearing some amazing new music.

In a year where I would rate a number of big name releases as underperformers, one dinosaur has proved that they are capable of delivering their very very best as well as delivering something unexpected and newat the same time.

More soon....but I have had the great pleasure of hearing rough mixes for 4 new Toto tracks.

I have been pretty hard on the guys over their last few releases. All have had room for improvement.

This (so far) sounds like it will be a phenomenal record! PHENOMENAL!

I quite honestly think that Toto fans will go NUTS when they hear this. I think the quality ensures that this band still are capable of drawing in new fans.

Some thoughts on the 4 individual tracks coming up! But I can't recall when the guys last sounded so good.

Isn't this a little premature?
I mean, is 4 tracks really enough to start heralding this as something great?
If you were to hear the first 4 tracks off Generations u would think it's going to be a masterpiece and then the whole thing heads south.

This is light years ahead of any 4 tracks possible lifted from Generations.

The production (even for rough mixes) is stunning and the complexities of the song arrangements will give prog fans something to think about.

In relation to your comment - I can see what you are thinking and I haven't yet heard the whole album or proclaimed it as a classic album(and won't...yet!)

What I am saying is the 4 tracks heard ARE stunning and to be frank - this year a lot of my heroes have fallen short. I'm more buzzed about these mere 4 tracks than anything else recently!

Music inspires and I'm inspired by what I hear so far! More thoughts soon. Time for another listen.

Sounds like this is def. one to look out for.
Besides their GH album, I don't own much in the way of Toto.
Hell, I don't even know who fronts the band these days.
Perhaps this impending release will change all that.

Yeah, I only know a few Toto songs, but if Andrew likes it that much it must be good.

It's hard to EVER go against the Wombat Rocker, but if Toto puts out 2 songs on this release better than Faith in the Heartland and The Place in Your Heart, I will find and kill OJ for the rest of the world to see.....Just my op.

Andrew does rule though.

Hey Kenny..OJ is the OJ Simpson fucker here in the states that lopped off two heads, and got away with it..it is almost comical, but sadly true....

I thought folks from all over the world knew about OJ(the Juice?)..

Sorry, Kenny.

I'm holding alot of hope for the new TOTO album, Through the looking glass is the only album I dont own as I was really disappointed with the content (dont get be wrong, it was well produced - but not TOTO IMHO)

Mindfields was good, better than TAMBU (Three tracks off Tambu really stood out which was Gift of Faith, I Will remember and The road goes on)
Mindfields has an overly nice sound, stand out tracks like Melanie, Mad about you, Caught int he balance and Spanish Steps of Rome (Japanese Bonus Track) some of the other tracks were ok.

Anyway, in general their last killer album was Kingdom of Desire and 13 years later it sounds like theyre gonna give us another album thats so good we'll wear it out!

Cant wait to see if its the holy TOTO grail :)
Regards,
Jim.

Hey Jim,
Agree 100% with you on Mindfields and Tambu.

Mindfield could have been better if not for the pacing problem at the front of the album. ie ballad to start, slow blues number as track 4...

See you tomorrow night Jim? Might have to have a listen to something :P

It keeps amazing me how there is lots of board members who know very little about Toto. Maybe it´s songs like “Africa” or “I´ll be over you” that makes some people think that Toto is just pop group. Truth is much beyond that. But I´m no way disrespecting their pop side as those aforementioned songs are classics on their own way. Andrew is really raising expectations high on new record but let´s wait...

Journey gets the same rep sometimes. Some people only know them as a ballad band.

That's just it...Toto has NEVER been about 1 indidivual, or ego-driven lead singer...it's always been about the band....I tell you, I CANNOT wait for the new CD, if Andrew and the Frontiers people weren't such c@ck teases they'd offer us some snippets...lol!!!

So let's see, Star Wars III, a new house, graduating from college, a 62" HDTV....what's left to live for after hearing the new Toto cd???...lol

I'm really looking forward to this new release, too. I was already a decent fan of Toto, but what changed it for me was catching their 25th anniversary show.. This opened me up to songs like "Girl Goodbye", "English Eyes", "Lion", and "Hydra". This band deserves to be known for more than just their biggest hits; not that "Hold The Line", "Rosanna", "Africa", and "I Won't Hold You Back" are bad songs, not at all, but there is so much more. They are capable of rocking, adding a little funk to the mix, and they can carry a power ballad, sounding more sincere than most(I Won't Hold You Back). I really dig the albums, up through "Fahrenheit".. they lose me a little with that, but "Fahrenheit", along with "The Seventh One", both have some good songs; I guess it's after that point that I really think things went downhill a little, but getting Bobby back was a good move, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do.

Toto - Falling In Between

Postby Will » Mon Nov 07, 2005 9:37 am

Hey guys

The good news is that the new Toto album IS as great as Andrew is suggesting. I had the pleasure of hearing some of the final vocals and solos/overdubs being added when I was invited to spend 3 days at Simon Phillip's studio last month. I've been listening to the rough mixes for the last month or so and this album exceeds any expectations that i might have had. Toto have achieved their own highest standards of lasting melodies and first-class musicianship.

It's consistently phenomenal throughout. Some tracks kick serious ass but there are still the great production and slower-paced songs which Toto fans love. Bottom of Your Soul and Spiritual Man, and Luke's A Simple Life are worthy follow ups to any of Toto's biggest hits but they are so much more than radio-friendly ballads.

My personal favourite is Taint Your World which is a Van Halen-esque uptempo song, reminiscent of Hot for Teacher. Luke just smokes all the way through this. Then there's the progressive songs such as Hooked featuring Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) on flute and the title track, Falling In Between, again with some seriously heavy riffing.

I agree that this is Toto's strongest album in a LONG time. It's certainly not overtly commercial but the big production is there in large portions. Toto have done themselves justice with this one - they've really pushed themselves and have delivered in style.

I LOVE it.

I owe most of Toto's cds. Except for the 2 and 3. I like the Joseph William era best. Tought they have fallen short since the release of their Hits package. No direction and no stand out vocals. Since 20, they have shown improvement, cover cd sucked though. Hope they can pull off something great. The concerts boots of them have always show they were a good band, no matter what tour, jsut haven't been able to put it into a cd-ERIC

The Greatest HIts / 25th Anniversary was a tremendously produced DVD.....As far as the hits of the AOR 80's...I suspect those days are gone (though Luke has mentioned a new cut with Joseph singing lead on the new album), so I think they're cognizant of that sound and will try to shoot for something of that elk..(recalling Cruel World from Mindfields)....Definitely interested in hearing Greg Phillanges (spelling?) influence...and Andrew's note about "progressive" elements has me intrigued....bring it! :-)

I think the reason for that is most of their singles and hits are ballads. Some people hear these songs on the radio and
doesn't "bother" to find out about the other songs on the album.

Check out Kindom of Desire, imo the most rocking Toto, mostly Luke on vocals.
