OT - Saw Neil last night

Postby SuiteMadameBlue » Wed Aug 31, 2005 12:30 pm

I had the pleasure of seeing Neil Diamond in concert last night.

The concert was either sold out or close to a sell out. There were over 15,000 people at this concert, unbelievable!! I bought a ticket right before the show for $50.00 on the street and ended up in the 6th row - thanks to Froy's fast talking (thanks Froy) - LOL I was amazed at Neil's voice and performance.

I was thinking during the concert, if JY invited Dennis back into the band, I don't think they could ever sell 15,000 tickets, does anyone?

Well, I had the pleasure of NOT seeing Neil in concert last night  And I truly mean no offense when I say that; I just have never been able to get into the guy's music.

LOL, no offense taken at all. I giggled at the fact of seeing him, but I was truly amazed at his show. I can't believe how many die-hards were there, especially seeing him for over and over, city to city. I thought I was bad seeing Dennis the amount of times, but some of these people took the cake.

I had no clue on any words to the songs, it was still a good time.

The bottom line on this is that Neil Diamond is a legend...the Jewish Elvis. Neither Dennis nor Styx have ever been, and they will never be, comparable.

He's one of those people.. I don't really know much by him, outside of the biggest hits, but I probably could become a pretty big fan, if I gave more of his stuff a chance. Did he do "Desiree"? I've always liked that one.

Hopefully Froy can post a set list or answer your question. I remember the UB40 song, the Monkees song - songs that he wrote. Something about blue jeans, America, Caroline somethinganother.

He did the song "You Don't Bring Me Flowers", it sounded great, but I just can't stand that song - long story.

BlackWall, if you get a chance to see him, do so. Even though I have no clue on the song titles, it was a great show. I loved how each member of his band came up from the floor. The crowd was a blast too, especially watching Froy in the front row

Monker, I didn't know that Neil was a legend. I knew he had fans that followed him, I just didn't know that he concerts keep selling out.

I gotta get in on this one.

Neil Diamond IS a legend and his concerts for years and years have been enormously successful and always sellouts.

I was a big fan of his in the 70' and went to see him several times. His concert is just amazing. I have heard many people say he puts on one of the best concerts ever. I always noticed he had a wide variety of people, very into his music, at his shows -- young, old, in-between, teenagers, kids, black, white, hispanic. His appeal is VERY broad-based. That is one reason I think he always plays big ticket venues that nearly always sell out.

Lately Neil has lost a bit vocally. His range, never huge, is pretty limited now, thanks to years of smoking. (Hope he has stopped).

He also used to be one of the hottest hunks on the circuit, but, sadly, age has changed that a lot!

I can guess the setlist, but would love to hear what he is performing now.

Glad you enjoyed it, Suite and Froy. I remember how much fun I had at the shows i went to in the 70's and maybe early 80's.

BTW...the guy has had a fascinating life. A most interesting biography.

I have also met people who's entire family, brother, sisters, cousins all attend his shows and follow him in awe. He is a legend and his concerts are pilgramages for many. I like him but he is an aquired taste.

First off....the Jewish Elvis ?????? what other Elvises do we have out there ? Is Elton John the Gay Elvis ? Ricky Martin the Latino Elvis ?
Michael Jackson the ( sort of ) Black, Child molesting Elvis ???

Just wondering.........

As for Neil, the guy must be a legend......in Vegas, theres a Neil Impersonator who plays 6 shows a week, and gets $50 PER TICKET
AND PEOPLE GOT TO SEE THIS !!!

He's a better song writer than a performer, but he's not bad at either.....

This is embarassing, simply because Neil has such a following and was/is so popular, but the only songs I recognize are:

Caroline
America
Red Red Wine (if it's a cover)
I'm A Believer (if it's a cover)

Don't be embarrassed!! I didn't know the names of a lot of the songs, but when he played them I then recognized them.

Froy knew every song, word for word and almost everything Neil said or was going to say.

Ek88, you are special :)

Maybe Neil needs to freshen his setlist up a bit then ???? I bet many Carrot Styx fans have that same ability at their shows...

Froy, and that was a BIG compliment too

I don't think that's going to matter. These "Diamondheads" have been to so many shows, it's unbelievable. The guy next to me talked and talked and talked about the show and was predicting what Neil was going to say next - LOL He also told me he loved me - LOL If you go to a Neil show, you'll know why - The whole place was full of love 8)

I'm still amazed by the performance!! I can't remember going to a show that had over 15,000 people attending. I think Journey only had 9,000, that was a GREAT show, by the way.

Well, froy can explain that one....I can't remember where I first heard it. Probably some Biography type show. I think his fans have called him that for a very long time.

Just Google : Neil Diamond "jewish elvis"

....and see for yourself.

Or, maybe Elvis was the gentile Neil Diamond.

Froy's out of town for the weekend. :?

I just "googled" and found this for those who are interested :) I love googling :)

http://www.startribune.com/stories/457/5579128.html

BEING 'THE JEWISH ELVIS'

Diamond has never even made the ballot for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -- but he's in the new Jewish rock hall called the Challah Fame, which labels him "the Jewish Elvis."

"That's great. I'm not taking that too seriously. There's nobody who's ever gonna live up to Elvis. Yeah, I'm Jewish, and you can put me in any Challah Fame you want to. Honestly, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I couldn't care less. It didn't exist when I first started and for the first 15 years of my career."

and here's another one:

I'd have to agree with you 100% on that one. I'm sure I've heard many of them and just didn't realize it was Neil.

No they are not covers he wrote them

I did not know that. My ignorance concerning Neil Diamond is exposed further :D

You would've had fun at the concert with me. I had this die-hard Diamondhead next to me telling me the next song, when it was written, what it was about, if the crowd was going to stand or sit and a whole load of information. He was a walking Neil Diamond information book.

I'm glad I'm starting to go to other concerts, I didn't realize there was so much other music out there besides Dennis and STYX - LOL 8)

Just thought I would say there is hope for everyone.

Neil Diamond has released a new, back-to-basics album. It is getting 5 star reviews from every publication that has, in the past, dissed him as a Vegas-style hack.

Wow. Even Rolling Stone! (As if I care about THAT publication).

Just thought I would post this as I am a Diamond fan and am glad to see him get his due. Next -- Dennis DeYoung!!! :D

There's always hope. "Our" music is coming back!! There's no good music out there anymore.
