AI Does Styx

Postby Soloud » Wed May 03, 2006 6:32 am

According to the AI site one of the guys is singing Renegade tonight. There was an article a few weeks back about how all the original artists saw spikes in sales when someone covered their song...wonder if Styx will see the same

Cool!!!!

Here is the recap for tonight:

Tonight, the remaining contestants will sing 2 songs – one from the year of their birth and one from this week’s Billboard’s Top 10 charts. Then, you vote, and come back for the Results tomorrow!

SPOILER - BUGSY - LOL

If you don't want to know what's being sung tonight, then don't scroll down

Paris Bennett -- "Kiss" by Prince (Tom Jones in 1988) and "Be Without You" by Mary J. Blige.

Katharine McPhee -- "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins and "Black Horse and Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstall

Taylor Hicks -- "Play that Funky Music" by Wild Cherry and "Something" by the Beatles (George Harrison wrote this one)

Elliot Yamin -- "On Broadway" by George Benson and "Home" by Micheal Buble

Chris Daughtry -- "Renegade" by Styx and "I Dare You" by Shinedown

Already knew this, LOL, Suite!!!

Very good exposure for all artists involved on this show. Someone on the AI boards predicted a spike in sales for the Styx catalog and I agree with that assessment.

Sure could not hurt!

How does that work? Is "Something" on the charts right now?

Is this the bald guy? I haven't watched the show since the Denver Auditions which this guy was at. I really liked him and his story so I keep an eye on who gets kicked off to see if he is still in. I may have to check this out. I think it is way cool, not only for the Styx song, but for an artist on that show to do something like Shinedown.

Taylor singing "Play that Funky Music" is his ticket off the show, IMO.

I know.... I am hoping this spoiler was wrong, but apparently Ryan Seacrest gave the list out on his radio show.

I am firmly in Taylor's camp.

I do look forward to Chris this week though as I like both songs he is doing.

Taylor did a great job with 'Something". Chris did OK with "Renegade". Competition is stiff now. I am rooting for Taylor, but I think he is the next to go. "Play that Funky Music" is horrible no matter who sings it.

From USAToday:
The Be True to Your School of Rock Award -- Given the golden opportunity to pick two rockers, Chris started with a stinker -- Styx's retrocious (if I can coin a term here) Renegade, which not even a Robert Plant could have saved -- and Chris is no Plant. But choosing a song by Southern rockers Shinedown, I Dare You, was a good idea (suggested by many of you, in fact), and he did a good job with it. Most of his fans will forgive Renegade (heck, most of his fans probably like Renegade), and he goes into Wednesday in good shape.

OUCH!!!

I actually enjoyed the version Chris did. And I do not believe the name Styx was ever uttered. I listened for it, and may have missed it, but I think they just said "Renegade" without naming the artist.

I don't watch American Idol...however I found this one to add to this...

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/en ... television

The rest of the show was hideous.

Chris Daughtry, the favorite all season and still the choice to win this whole thing, was just passable on Renegade, a 1979 single by Styx. That group's lead singer, Dennis DeYoung, exhibited more vocal range than Chris could manage. But Chris overshot his voice and overshouted Shinedown's I Dare You on his second try. The bald stud said he may have sung it too often during rehearsals. Hopefully, he'll never sing it again.

I didn't know Dennis sang Renegade!

Anyway I though Chris did a good job on it.

As far a Taylor goes I loved his version of both songs, he is the most original of the top five IMO, and I think he has a chance to get to the top 3-he won't win- but I would bet he sticks around a little while longer.

Katheren is the next to go. She murdered her first song and I think that along with some of her past performances will be he undoing.

When I first saw this thread title, I thought, A1 and hmmmm "Styx reggae"?

If you don't know who they are, there is a band called A1 who is a Jimmy Buffett tribute band!

I thought Chris did a great job with Renegade! But he definately pushed too far with I Dare You. I really like this guy's voice! As for Taylor, he does well. But he just does not have that "Idol" thing. He really is hampered by his hair color...I mean the guy looks 40+. The only way he would win, is if AI tries to "prove" they are about talent, not image. But there are people who have both. Back to Chris, when you think about it, AI has pop stars, AI has a country star, AI has a classic rock star with Bo Bice, why not try to have a modern rock star with Chris?

If image mattered that much, Rueben and Fantasia would never have won.

Actually, your argument would have stood better if you had said Clay!! Oh wait, that's right, he didn't win...

Reuban's image was not a problem because of the genre he went into. There are a lot of respected, over-weight, R&B crooners.

And I would say Fantasia fit fine in her genre.

What genre will Taylor fit? Singin' the oldies?

I thought he did well with it. He kind of made it a bit harder edged and more grunge than the Styx version, but it worked.

It was released in late 1978, but I believe Renegade wasn't released as a single and wasn't on the charts until 1979. Just like Babe wasn't really a single until early 1980 and Best Of Times until 1981.

Babe-Sept 1979

NOTE: Styx "Greatest Hits" was in the top 200 sales on Amazon yesterday and today. Not a coincidence, in my view, since it is routinely in the 500-600's. :D

Chris did a dang good job on this song... even if his voice was nearly blown out. EVerything I've heard Chris sing I'd like to hear on an album... even though I don't "really" want an album of covers from him.
