I think DDY is the most consistent overall, but High Crimes and Misdemeanors is a bad Styx song, but typical DDY solo song (and not his best).

"OMG," How could I forget "My God?" What an autrocity. Who says Denny can't rock??? Um, that song does. A lot.

Who Shot daddy is pretty pathetic too, but I used to work out to Boomchild, so I don't have any bad feelings towards it either way. I'm surprised that "Harry's Hands" hasn't made any "best of" lists here yet. personally, I've never liked the song much myrically, but I thought it was a favorite among DeYoungians.

The broadway/circus-y song you're talking about is "Where I Want to Be," and yeah, it dost sucketh.

Fine, you're right. There are a couple of songs written by Dennis that I pass up when I'm listening to cd's.

To comment on "Harry's Hands", I respect the fact that Dennis wanted to write a tribute to his dad, but it's not one of my personal favorites.. It's been a while since I've listened to it, but the line "cause Ameri CAN".. sticks out, and I still cringe..

I'm honestly not crazy about most of his solo material that appears on "Ultimate Collection", outside of the singles, but "Harry's Hands" and "Dear Darlin'" stick out as some of the worst. "Boomchild" has some pretty insightful lyrics, set to some really annoying, but catchy, '80s music.

As for Styx.. "High Crimes", "High Time", "First Time", "This Old Man", "Jennifer"(not a very good song, but for some reason, I kind of enjoy it), "Lonely Child"(the prequel to "Jennifer"??)

To be honest, I don't mind Dennis doing the Accapella version of show me the way, just as long as that Mike Eldred guys stays the hell away from it!

I can't stand his voice.. to me he sounds like the guy that intro's Mighty Mouse "HERE I COME TO SAAAAVVVEEE THE DAYYYYYYY" honestly.. watch a might mouse cartoon and put on DDY's live CD. The guy is TERRIBLE!

He completely ruined the 1st Orchestra show video I saw from Feb of 2000.

I think that's his best since "Show Me The Way," (well, technically that distinction would go to "While There's Still Time," if we're talking about the non-BNW version.) Nice little groove, good to see him exploring some darker -- possibly autobiographical -- territory. Get Dziallo out of there and it's nigh-classic, IMO.

I remember liking it very much at the time it came out, because it had a comfortingly proto-Styx arrangement. Still like bits of it. Yeah, "Ameri-CAN" is icky, but he's penned worse lyrics. Speaking of similar paeans, I have never liked "Goodbye To Roseland." Not even a little bit. And the more folks try to get me to like it by explaining what great meaning it has for the writer, the more I dig my heels in. Don't care. It's the blandest of the bland.

I would say that you are definitely on to something there. Lyrics with Dennis are a real hit or miss type of things. Some just make me melt "The waiter poured our memories into tiny cups..." and "I look to the sea, reflections in the waves spark my memories, some happy, some sad, I think of childhood friends, and the dreams we had..." are just brilliant...

Others, however, are cringe inducing. "Hello God" had serious potential, but then you get stuff like this "Hello God, I don't mean no disrespect, but I thought I'd call collect in case you answer". The rhyme is terrible. The sentiment is trying to be funny in a serious song... Word of advice to Dennis - your best work is when you subdue your sense of humor and write lyrics that touch us in some way - Come Sail Away, Show Me The Way, Pieces of Eight, Desert Moon, Best of Times...what do all of these have in common? They don't try to be funny - They don't try to be cute. They stay on a serious topic and explore it.

Yes, yes, and yes again. A lot of Dennis' more touching lyrics, to me, just seemed forced or cliche, which to me, ruins the sentimental message the song is trying to portray. Take Grand Illusion, a GREAT song, lyrically and musically, IMO. Then take Fallen Angel, to ME, they are basically the SAME song with different lyrics and melodies. same message, same story, only FA is very cliche and what I consider to be "too obvious," not to mention done before (by him, no less), so the message loses its punch. This Old man, and Harry's Hands are very much the same, only Harry goes into greater detail. It does make me want to suggest to DeYoung that perhaps he broaden his horizons when it comes to song material.

"Hip-hop" does ruin what could otherwise be a decent song, IMO. It's a catchy tune if you can get past the train wreck in the middle.

Look closely at the pic...it is a dead horse laying on its side, getting flogged....not a dog (lol). She saw that NealIsGod was using it once and 'borrowed' the idea.
