Oh come on ... be objective. I like all the guys, but I can find songs for each that really are just not good.
I think DDY is the most consistent overall, but High Crimes and Misdemeanors is a bad Styx song, but typical DDY solo song (and not his best).
"This Old Man",
"Jennifer"

the worst song DDY ever wrote, and the one question WHY I would demand an answer to should I ever get him alone in a room.......

YES. My biggest gripe about Dennis' music has always been his lyrics. The music has rarely been an issue, IMO - he's written some dynamite pieces of music. Sometimes, he's come up with some inspiring, albeit overly simplified, words, but usually, it's leaves me kinda...cringing. lol (there's that word again, & no, that's not a dig per se, it's just an honest ongoing opinion).

AnnieOprah wrote:Word of advice to Dennis - your best work is when you subdue your sense of humor and write lyrics that touch us in some way - Come Sail Away, Show Me The Way, Pieces of Eight, Desert Moon, Best of Times...what do all of these have in common? They don't try to be funny - They don't try to be cute. They stay on a serious topic and explore it.
Humor, in my opinion, is hard to pull off in music.
stabbim wrote:Humor is hard enough to pull off in life. In music, doubly so. But the real problem comes when you're mixing it in with otherwise serious stuff and your audience isn't receptive to that. Then again, he's written plenty of "touching" lyrics that I find loathsome too, so...
It depends on the song. Take "High Crimes & Misdemeanors" ...no, really, take it.As opposed to the lyrics bringing the music down, IMO there's some good quirky wordplay going on in the verses & bridge, ruined by a single bad line (you know the one) and the musical approach.
