yeah, I already read that above. I was asking a legitimate question, maybe someone else could throw me an answer, in their opinion.

Could Journey today have a hit with a song like "photograph"?

I doubt it. Nickelback's been around for a while now but the are still fairly new considering how long Journey's been on the scene. I don't even think the teenagers or young adults that do like their music would care much about ANYTHING new they put out, regardless of what it sounds like.

The 64 million dollar question for all bands, lol. It's such a crap shoot, with mostly crap floating to the top of the charts.

Like Carlito said, with the right promotion, MAYBE. (Not sure this management team knows how to do that...)

I think it will be tough, though.

I think, more of a chance than with Augeri, less of a chance than with Perry (still no guarantee).

Re the Plant posts, here's my 2:

I think the Mighty Rearranger songs are far superior to the 80's stuff, with the exception of the Pics @ 11 material, which were Zeppelinesque.

Huge Plant fan here, Pictures at Eleven and most of Principle of Moments are great records , but my favorite still is Fate of Nations. Mighty Rearranger doesn't have the versatility of FoN. Good record but not in the same league IMO. Dreamland is on the opposite side his worst record, boring and uninspired. What was he thinking at that time? Just as well as the Plant/Page record, which I bought and after the first 2 songs I was crying for a miracle happened, then it let me down so much I couldn't spin it no more. Boring.
The Plant/Page tour was a dream come true, they played the old material so well with that band I couldn't understand why they didn't go on. Maybe the problem is with Page writing... I assume... :?

These are great points. Maybe bands make too much out of people getting up to make a beer/potty run during the new songs. If ur at a show for 1.5-2 hrs & drinking, u gotta go potty sometime or another. & let's face it, most of us like to drink at shows (even if ur drinking soda, if it's hot & an outdoor event, u want another soda). I don't want to miss singing & dancing to my old favorites. But I do want another beer & if I have a few beers, I have to go potty. When should I go? During my favorite classic I came to the show to hear, sing along, & dance to...or during the new song I haven't yet bought the CD for? It's a dilemma I face at every concert. Typically, I go during the new song thinking when I buy the CD & listen to it a bit, I'll get to like it & then next year want to stay for that song. Am I that different from the average fan? I think not.

Ok here's the thing. I was at Hall & Oates last nite as u know. They've been around since the 70s, with huge hits in the 80s. In 2003, they came out w/a new album. "Do It For Love" (which was not the best song on the album IMHO but a good one nonetheless) reached #1 in the adult contemporary charts. "Forever For You" (a much better song) reached #3. "Man on a Mission" (definitely not the best song by any means) reached #16. That's 3 top 20 hits from that album. (I thought they should have released Miss DJ before the others but obviously, they knew what they were doing.) Damn. After all these years, they scored again. Now, when I saw them in 2003 just as they released that album, they sang "Do It For Love" & "Forever For You". Everyone got up and went potty or hit the beer line during those songs. It didn't seem to detract from their ability to be hits tho! I realize they're considered "blue eyed soul" and Journey is "melodic rock". But w/the resurgence of melodic rock at the moment, shouldn't Journey be wondering what H&O did differently in terms of promoting that album?

If a band is going to play new songs, maybe they should OPEN with them...or play them at the begining. Usually, everyone has their beer and has peed for the start of the show. Save the "classsics" for the middle and end. Or have an intermission / piss break during the show. I don't know...

I DO know that when I saw Van Halen, Kansas, Rush, and so on...when they played their new songs live, it didn't give ME the urge to leave my seat. When I go to a show, I don't want to miss one minute or one song...new or old.

I take a "Piddle-Pack" like our pilots use. I can just go where I stand

It's basically a zip-loc bag with a sponge in it. On those 2-5 hour sorties, those guys and gals sometimes have to pee... thus the "Piddle-Pack" :)

What really sucks is when one spills in the cockpit or, and I HATE these assholes, a pilot will toss one from the cockpit to a crew chief on the ground and the crew chief misses... SPLAT! Big, stinky mess on the ramp :)

And before all you sickos ask, YES, there is a special type of adapter so that the female pilots can go potty too :)

That's why a flight suit can be unzipped from bottom-to-top as well as the standard top-to-bottom.

The difference, certainly with Rush (great band by the way - virtuosity and integrity), is that the audience comes with a mindset that they know they will hear, and will want to hear, new stuff. And when they play the old material, much of it is re-arranged so that it still sounds fresh. Journey's audiences have become complacent - they have been conditioned to EXPECT the dirty dozen and a few other safe classics from the Journey back catalogue, played exactly the same way. It will take some time to break that conditioning and would need the help of at least some airplay of new material. That's more likely to happen in the UK, which is more tolerant of new material on its TV music channels. It's a perfect opportunity for Journey to break with it's self imposed convention of only playing familiar songs. It's up to them to take that opportunity, and I'm sure JSS will try to exert some influence there.

Some new arrangements to those older songs will also help to shake things up a bit and will probably be welcomed by neutral fans, but unfortunately may disappoint some Perry die-hards. But in my opinion it's the only way to prove Journey still has relevance beyond it's back catalogue.

Marty - I think the true Perry die-hards either don't go to the shows at all or go with very low expectations. But I totally agree with you that Journey need to shake things up a bit re: arrangements and set-lists.

No, its like taking a "zip-loc bag w/ a sponge in it" out of your pocket, peeing in it, zipping it up and then tossing it in the nearest trash can... (or throwing it at the idiot in front of you that can't stop trying to sing!)

IF Journey had continued to challenge their audiences from 1998 through now, they would be "known" for playing new material. It may have changed the audience sizes some, but I doubt much because the hits are still played anyway.

Who cares if the fans go get a beer or potty...they will still HEAR the new material. And then, if they hear the song elsewhere they will recognize it.

The band will not have a top 10 hit with this management and their own attitude. But JSS might affect change.

If Journey released photograph with Steve A singing...no, it would not have hit. His voice is not what today's radio wants. But with JSS...they certainly might.

Journey has written hit songs....both great songs that should be hits and "commercial" songs that might not be as good but certainly could have been a hit.

The music/rasio business sucks today. But thinking outside the box could create something. But it takes band AND management commitment. And it means they cannot be afraid to fail. I think it is obvious that Journey took the safest route because of the Perry fallout.

Jeff, Neal... you guys gettin' this???

TRUE STORY:
At the M&G in Virginia Beach this past July, someone had a disposable camera, complete w/ Journey logos, that they bought at a stand right before the session. Neal and Deen were blown away! They had NO IDEA that this kind of stuff was being sold at their shows :)

Ewww that's gross Carl. Easier for u boys to just pull it out and pee than us girls. If u were standing behind/beside me and started peeing, I'd be pretty grossed out tho nonetheless. (Although I might try to sneak a peek at ur thang! Sorry I'm perverted!) Remind me to always sit far from u tho as I'm one of those idiots that can't stop trying to sing!

With their little company Nightmare or Nocturn (which was it?) they basically re-invented the way a concert is pull-off, i.e. video and big-screens...
They could once again take concerts into a whole new realm :)

actually, not a bad idea, lol. a little gross. But I'd love a mega concert, and to here Jeff say "EVERYBODY, WE'RE GONNA DO A BRAND NEW TUNE OFF OUR SOON-TO-BE RELEASED OPUS 'insert album title here'... "

wearing a piddlepack not to miss a note would be a small price to pay, lol.

The only guy who can put out NEW music and everyone stay in there seat is Springsteen. His fans are twice as loyal as Journey fans to be honest.

I like what he does...In his 3+ hour setlist, the ONLY song that gets played nightly is Born to Run. other than that, he gives the band a NEW setlist 2.5 hours before going on. Keeps them on their toes and keeps the band and tour fresh.

I remember reading somewhere about Billy Squire only playing his new CD. No classic hit's, the crowd almost rioted as he walked of the stage. Basically said "F.U" to everyone in attendance.

I'll never forget the 2000 DVD taping in Vegas, where they launched into Higher Place, and
the entire crowd sat down at once. I just don't get it.

Nothing bores me faster than a greatest hits set list. I like new stuff. But I'm in the minority.
