One Hundred Years From Now-Review (Spoiler)

Postby Grotelul » Wed Jun 20, 2007 2:10 pm

Like someone said in an earlier post, if you like Dennis De Young's solo work you should really like this CD and if you are not a big fan, you probably will like a few songs but will pass on most others. This is a departure compared to what he has done in recent times. It is his heaviest music since Desert Moon. To compare it to Equinox? No way. I hear a little bit of Desert Moon era sound, early 1980's pop/rock (some of them remind me of some slower Mr. Mister tunes), Meat Loaf, throw in a few Oberhiem sounds and a surprise or two (One song has a Southern Rock feel with slide guitar) and there you have it. The background vocals are really good on a few songs (Styx sounding) but on others I found annoying. A lot more guitars on this CD with more than one track being used for guitar. All in all, in my opinion and for my taste his best effort since Desert Moon.

1. One Hundred Years From Now-We've all discussed this one
2. This Time Next Year-Little bit of Little Suzie and Desert Moon era sound. Styx sounding background
3. Rain-Think Meat Loaf
4. Save Me-Slower tune, Desert Moon era/ Edge of the Century sound. Styx sounding background-Good tune
5. Breathe Again-Slow tune...about Suzanne
6. Crossing The Rubicon-Most sounding like older Styx..think older Styx with Hunchback style vocals, theater
7. Respect Me-Bluesy organ tune-Not bad at all
8. I Believe In You-Think Desert Moon era upbeat pop.
9. Forgivenesse-This is one that sounded like slower Mr. Mister to me-Good tune
10. I Don't Believe In Anything-Southern feel to it. Acoustic with slide. Different..which I like to hear from him.
11. Turn Off CNN-Basic Rocker with a little Rockabilly feel and lots of guitar.

As hard as he may try.....DDY is not Styx!! This proves it!! I'll stick to Cyclorama until the new Styx CD is done.
I think I listen to Meat Loaf and Mr Mister for now and if I feel like taking a nap I put on Desert Moon.

Equinox????

Grotelul,I like what you are saying.
I have $8,93 left on my I-Tunes account.
I am willing to spend $4,94 ,as in 5 songs for starters.
Which ones do you recommend?
Pick your 5 favorites, and I will check 'em out.
This is a big investment for me ,so please be thorough

Sorry, but I like melody.... that's always been Dennis' strongpoint (along with his voice) and something that the majority of Cyclorama clearly lacks.

If you like Cyclorama, more power to ya, but it's like enjoying an entirely different band than classic Styx. Some of those songs sound like friggen Blink 182. Puh-leeze.

Dennis' stuff hits far closer to the mark of classic era Styx.

True. He's not too shabby a keyboard player, either.

DarwinNebraska wrote: and something that the majority of Cyclorama clearly lacks.

Beg to differ.

You may not like the melodies in question, but the album's chock full of 'em. It's not like they went some atonal nu-metal route with it.

DarwinNebraska wrote:Dennis' stuff hits far closer to the mark of classic era Styx.

I suppose that depends on how you define the "classic" era, and which flavor of it appeals to you the most. For the past 15 years or so, DDY has done very little that hearkens back to Styx material I would want to be listening to, but some of the new clips do sound interesting. We'll see....

I disagree. I am not a fan of any of DDY's solo work but this does feel different. I don't see the Desert Moon influences here.

Crossing the Rubicon sounded Pink Floyd like to me.
Turn Off CNN reminded me of Borrowed Time and RTP (especially the piano parts)

Its not Equinox. But, everyone hears the songs differently. I did not see any of the same influences as the reviewer. I know it will go against your forum persona but just buy the CD and listen to all the songs. If you don't like them after that, you can critisize all you want...

Personally I thought Desert Moon was HORRIBLE. I thought Dont Wait For Heros, Desert Moon and Gravity were good. Dear Darling was fair and the rest of the songs SUCKED.

I thought Back To The World was Dennis's HEAVIEST & best solo effort. I also liked Boomchild much better than Jello Moon.

PLEASE dont compare Dennis's latest effort to Desert Moon. I am anxiously awaiting its arrival, and you are scaring me.

I know that Froy has compared 'One Hundred Years From Now' to 'Equinox'. Since his comparission came right after His (Froy's) Assembly Line Comparing & Contrasting the delicate odors of Dennis Farts, I took His review with a close pin and a grain of salt.

I'm just hoping that its an effort worthy of Dennis's TREMENDOUS talents. I also hope that his songs dont come off as preachy & broadwayish.

Until then I look forward to hopefully my NON Desert Moon flatulent smelling CD.

Now I have no problems saying it is his best solo cd ,easy.
It sounds like Tommy is singing backup on several songs.
If anything,it is a cross between Cornerstone and PT,and then something else.
(Dennis being in a playful mood.(About time))
I could do without the ,yet another song for Suzette.

There is plenty to dig into here.
And that I will.

Well you missed the Eq sounding songs
The intro to Breath Again is a total Prelude 12
Then Crossing The Rubicon is the other EQ sounding song IMO

Just remember. There are a lot of people on this board now who have a strong anti-DDY bias to what they bring to analyzing his music -- old and new. And some apparently are doing so before even hearing the CD at all. :P

Take that into consideration if you read some of the reviews before you have had a chance to form your own opinion.

We just need for the wagon train to get our copies of this CD from Canada to Texas so we can put our own biases into play.

I guess when you are the founder of a band, sing lead on most of the songs, write most of the songs and produce EVERY album, you tend to become the topic of conversation amoungst the fans.

Seems reasonable to me.

I am still working on it,but 2 songs don't make an Equinox album.
Prelude 12 was hardly a song ,but it was a sensational intro.
Though I did not notice after 6 or 7 listenings yet.
As I said ,there are many goodies here, but Equinox standard it ain't.

I do love Dennis, obviously, but I still would like another new studio album from the current Styx lineup.

I just don't know if they can top Cyclorama without Glen's contributions. His awesome background vocals were all over that album.

I have my doubts on that score as well. At this point, I would rather see S/B continue as TS's primary thing rather than Styx. But then, I thought that a decade ago, too. Such is life.

I don't think JY or Tommy will quit this band as long as the cash is rolling in. This is probably the only way for them to make such good cash, since they aren't getting as many royalty checks as Dennis is. I can't blame them for that. Plus, they seem to be having fun.

I do like to go and see them every once in a while, but I just can't get past Larry singing Dennis' tunes.
I would go see them more often but every time I ask someone to go with me, they refuse when they find out Dennis is not in the band. My Ex wife wouldn't go with me when we were still married once Dennis was kicked out. The girl I dated for a while after my marriage refused to go without Dennis. My Best friend and my brother refuse to go with me for the same reason! So if I want to see them, I have to go by myself. That's not very fun!!

I'm serious! None of my friends want to see them without Dennis.
The girl I am seeing now constantly makes fun of Larry. She saw the Cleveland orchestra concert on PBS and said Larry singing "I am the Walrus" was horrible! Every time I bring up Styx she starts making fun of that by saying Coo Coo Ca Choo!!

Plus, most of the people I grew up with and still have as friends had "the Best of times" as either their Junior or Senior prom song. Some of them (including myself) had it as thier first dance song in their wedding.

I have listened to the complete CD and formed my OWN opinions that there are Desert Moon era styles there. Someone else is going to hear something other than that and that's fine. I can say this though, Froy is going way overboard on saying this is a GREAT set of songs. He is trying to pump up his man and that's fine, I just don't want to see people buying this CD and expecting Equinox. Sure there is maybe one section that sounds like it was lifted from Prelude 12 and that is about it. Other than that it sounds nothing like Equinox or in my opinion remotely close to the quality of Equinox. I have nothing against DDY just because I follow the current Styx. I just prefer the way he used to write and sing prior to 1979.

Pretty much like when the 'Far Cry' snippet was released from the new RUSH cd....it was a 25 sec INSTRUMENTAL piece that ended with a Hemispheres-like riff.....the talk was that they were going back to that '70s sound'.....when the CD was finally released, guess what? It was just a tease.

There wasn't even a HINT of that 70s sound......

Anyway, I look forward to hearing this new Cd....I will say, however, that I'm partial to the 70s Styx/DDY......so we'll see.
