[/quote]This is kinda off-topic, but I think Queen made a mistake when they 'reformed' by using Paul Rodgers as the vocalist. He simply didn't have the range that ol' Freddie had. Queen should have tried to get that guy from The Darkness to sing in Freddie's place...if anyone has ever heard that band, you would agree!
piecesofeight wrote:I've made a lot of jokes about Lawrence because I really don't like him as a singer. I don't even like his solo stuff. I wuoldn't even like him if he never was a part of this whole bit we call Styx.
While to many it's a matter of opinion about why Dennis is not in Styx anymore..in all seriousness..I honestly just have never understood why it was Lawrence who was brought in. OK..fine..the guy can play keys, can twirl, jump and is a super nice guy. Fine..they for sure found someone who doesn't sound like Dennis..but with how great Dennis' voice is..I would think they would have at least found someone with a better singing voice.
For those who really support Lawrence..do you really, really think the dude can SING?
It never really hit me that the groups/artist that I continue to support are the one's who had people who could really sing. A lot of the one's I don't support anymore..have somewhat lost it.
My first time hearing Lawrence live was at the Rock To The Rescue show. Because I went there to support other artist..I told myself that even though I wasn't happy how the whole Dennis/Styx thing went down..I would be open minded.
Certain parts of the show..Tommy would come out with his guitar and do certain songs. Some people would come and join him. Jack came out to do High Enough. At one point Lawrence came out and joined. All I could do was cringe..it really was bad.
The person who came with me hadn't heard Lawrence before..but had heard Dennis' Styx songs. When Styx came out and Lawrence did Dennis' Styx songs..the person who was with me looked like they were about to either laugh or vomit.
Putting all jokes aside and what REALLY happened that I will believe from the source..Lawrence really cannot sing that well and just doesn't sing Dennis' songs well. I have heard regular joes SING Dennis' Styx songs better. Not saying they have to SOUND like Dennis..but at least carry a tune.
What to I judge being able to sing or still sing on? People like RIP-Brad Delp, DDY, Michael Sweet, Ann Wilson, Tommy Shaw-best sitting on a stool with a accoustic guitar when feeling well, Steve Perry and Jimi Jamison-of yesteryears. Those are just some. So..as I mention some in their prime..let me ask this so to prove I can cut him a break.
Has Lawrence always sounded like this? What gets me is some are saying he sounds better than ever.
Sometimes when we have someone taking the place of a lead singer who really had it..we cut them a break because we wonder how would the original person sound if they came back. Well in the Dennis/Lawrence case..we know because we hear Dennis singing the classic Styx tunes all the time. With Steve Perry..we just don't know. Brad Delp still sounded fantastic..as does Michael Sweet and Ann Wilson.
With all these groups getting back together..practically everybody..lol..we are getting a true taste of who still has it and who lost it..and reminded who never really had it..damn..there are so many who have been the lead singer who just cannot sing. I mean really SING. Carry a tune.
Not just because I am a huge fan of Boston and Stryper..but this whole thing is really just brilliant and I am completely geeked over it. If there was ever a time to use the word UNREAL..now is the time. Still pinching myself.
Again I ask..for those who support Lawrence..do you really, really think the guy can really sing? Can he really carry a tune?
I hold my own opinion on what happened with Styx/Dennis so keep that in mind as I say this so this doesn't turn into another who did what to who..even if Dennis had been out on his own terms and he was ok with everything..I still wouldn't like Lawrence singing and think he was a good choice as far as the singing of Dennis' songs. Fine..he's a great guy and can play the keys..but that's not enough when we are talking about needed someone to cover the Dennis' classic Styx songs.

Paul Rodgers sounds NOTHING like Freddy yet YOU loved the show.
If Gowan joined Queen I would not even go to the show and neither would anyone else
Speaking of giving it a rest don't ya think you should be telling that to the current Styx band
Freddy died Dennis was sandbagged big difference.Back in 1999 JY, Tommy, Chuck & Glen pretty much decided the same thing. They found someone that THEY liked and they went out and toured. Some fans LOVED it others DIDNT.
Nobody did period.Still 10 years later they are going strong and there is a market for them.
Yea 500 people playing bars
Great marketShit I like Gowan. He gives a Rush sound to DDY's tunes.
Yea a Rush to the exits
It's ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL good!!!!!!!

That's true. It was mostly question marks for the first few months, then many years of jousting exclamation points.
These days I tend to opt for the ellipses....

Styx with Larry is so so, but Larry singing Criminal Mind with Styx is very memorable - they really added much to that song. It was impressive. But yes, Larry is just filling in the gaps, as much as I hate to say something negative about a fellow Canadian ...

I don't think that is negative.I bet you Larry loves his job.
Though I think they should now pick another of his songs.

Shows just how clueless current Styx fans are.

I just think it shows that out in the real world, it doesn't matter a whole lot at this point.
In your real world maybe
But in my world Styx has been destroyed.
Followers like you have a few beers and run to see Blue Collar Man.Too bad you can't look at the positives...
In the STYX world its all negative
Dennis doing shows his way.... Hunchback is back on track.....
His way would be to get his band back.
And not watch Gowan make an ass out of himself.and for the rest of us, that are styx fans, past and present, we get to see as many shows as ever.

and this is bad because Dennis doesn't like doing more than 30 or 40 shows a year?

Damn..Michael singing some of my fav all time songs. SWEET! No pun intended.
If you only know Michael from the old Stryper days then keep the remarks to what you know. The dude can sing/rock and the glam/bumble days are gone. Have been for years.
I agree with you Michael has an awesome voice, that is why I am so excited about this Boston tour. I wonder if they will work a couple of Stryper songs into the set.
sniper16 wrote:RumTumJM wrote:Does anyone know if the tour will be Boston/Styx or Boston/Styx/? ?
boston has tour by them selves for a few years now and play about 2hours so i dont believe they would do a triple bill
they were supposed to tour with reo last year, so an co headline band would be expected.

If that's the bill, here how it will go:
Styx opens, play 25 minutes:
Renegade
Blue Collar Man
Miss America
Some Song After 1999 That I Can't Remember
Crystal Ball
Come Sail Aw---(cut short due to time restraints)
REO is second, plays 40 minutes (including 18 minutes of Kevin Cronin talking)
Boston plays two hour set

So what ?
30 to 40 shows a year is fine for a man his age
Look at most bands they tour just about the same amount of dates
Only cash poor Styx needs to run around for 10 years and burn it out

Don't worry Toph, this is the place where you can compare Dennis Deyoung to Hitler but don't you DARE say JY had bad lyrics or Gowan had a bad voice!
